I gotta say I liked this issue a lot. The story was alright and the art totally rocked. Mr. Delaney, you have mastered the animated style. Especially the page with Wonder Woman and Superman's conversation. Wow.
There were times were Supes looked like a smiling idiot, but overall it was a great effort.
Oh by the way John, thanks for throwing Alfred in there, it was awesome seeing him.

I thought Nicieza nailed most of the dialouge. There was a lot of humor and all the characters were right on mark.
I also thought Superman's connection with the female alien was interesting.

This series continues to improve and I can't wait for next months Amazon story, although I will miss Delaney's artwork.
He's got the stuff!

The buzz make this one sound good on both ends- good story and great art... and an appearance by Alfred?! I'll have to squeeze some time into my busy day tomorrow and pick this issue up!!! :D

Hey Superman,
Thanks Tons O'! Alfred is one of my all time favorite characters too, so I was very pleased when Fabian wrote him into the script.
I was really pumped with the WW and- Supes conversation page. Randy's inks were right on mark and John's colors on that page just blew me away, talk about nailing the mood!
I was trying to convey's Superman's excitement at meeting others like himself so hence the smiling idiot look ;)
I agree, Fabian really nailed the voices of the characters, and I liked how subtle he was with the various interactions
Thanks Again

I would love to storyboard this episode, imagine the camera circling Superman as he points out the devastation of Quarac to the Daxamites. Man, it would be cool!!

I really, really, really enjoyed this issue. i was skeptical with the series after the firts couple of issuesw, but now I'm sure I'll be sticking around this book for awehile. It all looks just so nice. The art was just great and the story was pretty well done. Hopefully we'll escape from the aliens story more, but this was a cool issue.

Man, thanks alot Dick!
I'm just so pleased that all the response is so positive. As you know I was very conscious of trying to really emulate the look of the new designs and I was so stoked when I saw the inks and colors. John Kalisz (the colorist) is a credit to his profession. He brought so much depth and dimension to the pages without losing the animated "look".
Now, being the hardcore animated Batman fan that you are Dick, did you happen to notice the Jack Ryder (The Creeper) cameo I threw in at the bottom of page 5?
Continuity is my middle name

I caught that! That was a great little in joke? Did you do that, or Fabian? I really liked seeing good ol' Alfred in there. It's been too long! I'll admit I was reall ylooking forward to this issue, basing it on your previous ADCU works, but when I saw it - I was just blown away. Anychamnce you can get on this title permenatly? :)

The Jack Ryder cameo was all mine. Fabian just asked for a reporter standing on the street, but I've always loved The Creeper so I knew immediately who I was going to use.
As for if I could get on the book permanently? I would love to, but I think it's going to be up to the fans. If they really want that to happen hopefully they will inundate DC and Dan Raspler with requests for that. Fan-based demands hold a lot of water with editors so if you guys really want that to happen it's up to you!

I think that this title should get a firm creatiove team. Looked what happened to the magnificent Superman Adventures when rotating creative teams were initiated. The quality and sales took a nasty spill - and the title never recovered. A permenant created team would just work nice. I think idealy it'd be nice to see a Storrie/Delaney creative team on JL Adv and Grayson/Graves on Gotham Adventures. If not Graves, then Cameron Stewart.

But back on topic, #3 stands on top as the best issue of the series yet.

Hmmm. Well, I can't say that I loved this issue like many others seem to have. I'm kind of luke-warm on the series so far. I thought the first issue was horrible, I thought the second issue was great, and now the third issue was...so-so.

As everyone's said, the art was great - I've certainly got no complaints about that. And I appreciate the various nods to the Batman fans.

The story was ok, but didn't really grab my interest at all - I knew from the start it was going to be a preachy story about the dangers of too much power, and that's exactly what I got. And much of the humor just fell flat on this one for me - especailly Flash's lines. I mean, they're standing in what is essentially a gigantic tomb and he's making wise-cracks about the "hot" alien "babe"? Ugh - that really turned me off to the writing.

Hey Clayface
Thanks so much for the art praise, as for the story, I guess it's not going to appeal to everyone but I felt that Fabian really captured the "voices" of the characters. The Flash line you referred to didn't strike me the same way, I get the feeling this Flash is a bit like early Spiderman in that he masks uncomfortable or dangerous situations with humour in order to deal with them.
Still it might not be for everybody.
Thanks again for your observations

John-
Thats a very astute statement about the Flash. I had just been pondering the same comparison the other day-- and for everyone complaining about Flash's lines being cheezy etc, consider how often Spidey uses lines of a similar fashion. Flash is a hotshot who loves self-promotion and is without a doubt the youngest member of the team-- 20's would be my guess?

in my opinion his motormouth helps to make Flash cool!

lash just wouldn't be flash without his motor mouth. Its almost the same reason I i like spidey so much too. Some comics would be so boring without someone to lighte them up. In a way Flash and Spiderman are like twins.

Keep up the awesome flash runnin effects. I liked those the most!

Having Flash be a motor-mouth and lighten a situation is fine - but there are times when even he would hold his tongue. The situation seemed far too serious and macbre to be hitting on the last female survivor of the large group of beings. To me, that was the equivalent of watching someone come up and hit on a survivor of the WTC tradgedy mintues after the towers' collapse - its just out of place and in bad taste. It really rang wrong with me.

Well I managed to pick up this ish... and I sorta liked it. Especially the art. There were times where Superman looked kindda weird, but I guess the weirdness stems from Bruce Timm's original awkward designs for his face (which puzzled while watching the pilot). Otherwise there were outstanding panels, which perfectly depicted intense action. To be honest, I was pleasantly astounded by the dynamism some pages displayed (yes, I pay a lot of attention to dynamism- to me, they are one of the most important features of the BT animated style)

As for the story, well it was rather predictable but still quite good in its own way. It was consistent with the writing style of the series (which is not really a compliment though...)

Hi Salvor
Thanks for the dynamism comments, this is something that I definately try to go for. I love pacing and visually building to a pictoral pay off. I was trying to get a real storyboard movement and animated feel to the panels, so I hope it worked.

I just picked this issue up yesterday, and I thought it was the best one yet!! The art was incredible, and the story was great! Alfred's cameo was nice as well, it would be fun to see him more often. I also wouldn't complain about a Lois Lane cameo either. I didn't notice the Jack Ryder cameo though, I'll have to go back and read it again! :) I'm not so sure about next months, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Speaking of that, does it help to draw, or plan out a comic, like a storyboard? I could tell now and again that some of the panels seemed...well..."storyboard" esque, so I was wondering if that helps you when you do artwork for any given book.

Hey DG
Great question, every book requires it's own unique take on how an artist wants to tell the story but with this book since it's based on a TV show it felt very natural to plot it out with a widescreen storyboard vibe. I didn't want every panel to look like a TV screen but definately all the establishing shots and the big action pieces.Since so much of my work is in storyboards, it definately inspires the style of storytelling that I do. It makes me open up the shots more and add a lot more background detail in.
Cheers

Hey flhero
Oh sure! I think anytime you're drawing that much you naturally improve in your skills. Before ADCU I had not done a regular run on a comic before so there was a huge learning curve which I really enjoyed. That's why the stuff I did later on in the book became much stronger in composition and storytelling.
After "Adventures" I was lucky enough to work on a whole variety of styles, everything from The Herculoids and the Galaxy Trio (Toth style) to Dexter's Laboratory(Tartakovsky style) and Scooby-Doo (Hanna Barbera style). This variety is much more like working in animation where I go freelance job to job and every show has it's own design package. So I approached JLAdvs. the same way this time, trying to really honor the design style. Plus these new JL designs are more angled and stylized which is a more comfortable fit with the way I draw.
Could I be any more long winded?
John

Well, I got the issue last week, but I can't use my home computer since it's down so I'm writting at school.

I think #3 was vastly better than the first two issues, and Delaney definately is the man to handle the series! My only criticism is that the figures didn't seem to flow as well as they did in Adventures in the Dc Universe #12 (my favorite JL Delaney art issue!) I realize that the new designs pose some different challenges, but I really wasn't too thrilled with how Ku handled them and Delaney's art seemed rather reminiscent. I have confidence though that with a few more issues (and hopefully a full-time gig on JLA!), Delaney's Justice League will soar as higher than ever before!

Nice story, great cameos (Jack Ryder and Alfred!), great coloring and consistantly enjoyable fun art! Nice job! I just wish Delaney was doing the Amazon issue (next one) and the Batman villains issue (#6)!!!

Hey DB
Thanks for the observations. I'm a fan of Ku's work and I think Ku really nailed the design look which is something I also tried to do but I think our storytelling style is quite different from one another. These designs are definately more angular than the previous BTAS and STAS designs and are therefore to me more pleasing graphically but don't necessarily flow with the same fluidity as say some of the stuff on "Superman vs Lobo" or" ADCU". Plus in issue ADCU#12 I designed the look for every character except Batman and Superman so there was naturally more comfort in the execution. However by the time I finished this issue I felt very comfortable in the style and I feel confident that I could bring even more looseness and dynamism to the next issue I do.
And man would I love to do this regular.
Thanks 2
John

Hi.
Just wanted to throw in my two cents. I recently wrapped up my third Justice League Adventures issue with Min Ku-- and I have to tell you-- Min's art on the Amazon issue is AWESOME! The super-crowd shot on the cover alone will blow you all away! The guy is the George Perez of the Adventures Universe! And just wait until you see the double page splash in Issue #6 (and it's not just Batman villains-- this baby's got Flash-villains, Superman-villains, classic JLA-villains, it's got more villains than you can shake a stick at... okay, it's got over 40 ((but who's counting?))...)! And the topper? A "cast of thousands" shot in our most recent issue! (I swear-- above my description for the shot I wrote Min a note, it read: "This page will either kill you, or win you an Eisner!")
Min is a trooper! He goes in there and draws every single building, every darn character (no stick figures here!) and keeps it all in that nifty Bruce Timm style. It's neat-- you get these epics that look like they could be actual episodes-- but scenes so large in their scope, they'd burst the heart of any animator who'd dare to tackle them!
And, with each story we do, Min's story telling just keeps getting better and better. There's a Batman scene in #4 that... well... I don't want to spoil it, so you'll just have to wait until Feb. 13. All I'm asking is that you hold off judgement until you see it. And when you do, I'm sure you'll all be singing Mr. Ku's praises from the rooftops-- and will proudly proclaim him one of the best darn Adventure-style artists of all time! Whew! How's that for hyperbole?!
Anyhoo! With that said... I though issue #3 was great as well. After I read through my stack of comics last week, I called up my ol' pal (and guru/sage), Fabian Nicieza and told him that not only was it my favorite read of the week, but also the best issue of JL Adventures to date! BTW, John-- the page on Mount Rushmore was FANTASTIC! And MY favorite cameo that you threw in was Peter Parker! Nice one!
Talk to you all later!

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm passing judgement too early on Ku's work, I guess I just haven't been overly impressed with his work to date. I'll give him one thing though...he nails the close-up head shots! Diana, Batman Superman and the rest of the gang looked great when he got up close in issue one. I eagerly await the next issue, and hope that his work does blow me away! But as for calling him the George Perez of the animated world...welll ..the jury's still out on that one!

Forgive me, but from reading what you've written, it's plain to see that you are part of the team bringing us Justice League Adventures...but I don't know who ( :o ) Are you the editor, supervisor....? ?

Hi Dan!
I too, am a big fan of Min's art. I think he totally nails the Timm style and I like his pacing alot. I can't wait to see #4 and the double splash of all the villians you mentioned has me stoked to see it as well. I feel I would be remiss if I did not mention what a very talented writer you are, If #4 is anything like your past work I'm positive it's going to rock! By the way, you are the only person who noticed Peter Parker. Good eye on ya!
Hope you and I can work on a JL Advs. book together soon

Well I definately put cameos of friends in the book. You wouldn't notice them but I used my wife as the Daxamite girl and I make an appearance on page 6 panel 1. I'm the photographer on the far left side leaning over the wall.

This I think is one of top issues of JL Adventures. It definantly stands above the majoraty of mediocre issues that have littered the title and was definantely the best of the first three.

The story while not an incredible ground breaking epic was a good read and it was great to see Superman and the girl making a connection. Superman really shone in this issue and I liked Batman being his usuall untrusting self and then Superman yelling at him. Though the too much power thing and responsibility came off pretty cliche' but it didn't ruin the issue. It could have been overplayed waaaaaay too much thank goodness it wasn't.

Oh and John how much can I say that I LOVE that page with Superman and Wonder Woman on Mount Rushmore! Wonderful! Superb! You really captured the mood and the colorist did a WONDERFUL job the red hues are superb! Simply superb!

As much as I still enjoy this issue, I think the story, while good, sort of recycled an overused idea. I don't reread it much, but when I do, I always enjoy the art. Delaney always tries to keep things dynamic and emotive.
