I have to say, I never would have imagined in a million years that Martian Manhunter would have become a favorite character of mine, but Justice League and Justice League Unlimited made him into one.

I think he really benefitted from staying the background for most episodes, getting the spotlight only when the writers had a really good idea of how to use him. From his startling debut in Secret Origins, his tragic backstory and his command of the Watchtowers, to his friendships with Diana, Flash and Superman and his constant struggle to deal with his pain and fit in...J'onn truly was the heart of the team from beginning to end, and I will miss him most out of all the Justice Leaguers.

And now...a look back at J'onn's DCAU life...

I've always loved Martian Manhunter's character both in the comics, cartoon & as an action figure! He quite possibly is the powerfulest member of the League. I have a DC JL comic where Superman states that there are only a handful of opponents in all the universe, that he would actually dread fighting & J'onn was at the very top! The episode that totally made J'onn a bad Mofo, was "Task force X" when he single handidly whooped the Squad's behinds even after being split in half by the Annihilator! He woulda beat them too if it hadn't been for Plastique threatening to kill Atom Smasher if he didn't let them go. Martian Manhunter rules! I hope he makes one last appearance before the series is over.

Yup the Martian Manhunter is a pretty BA character. task Force X was a great episode to show his awesomeness. I also liked how cold he had become from Secret Origins to Another Shore. In SO he told Diana not to judge mankind to harshly when they were looting, yet in To Another Shore, they had switched roles, Diana was trying to convince J'onn to reconnect with humanity. Thats quite the development for a cartoon character.

i'm hoping J'onn returns from his sabbatical for the 2-part series finale
sans batman, he's my favorite Leaguer

Here, here! You know, a friend of mine and I were talking about this the other day. J'onn is such an under-appreciated character that deserves some recognition. The best thing about the Justice League show is that they've highlighted how powerful a character he is. My hope is that the mainstream comics will pick up on this and give him some more spotlight... Good topic, DB...

Well with the DC comics regularly adapting what the DCAU(Kirby designed Manhunters in GL) does maybe there is hope for Jonn in the comics. I always liked him as a charicter but the JL/JLU made him a really interesting and fun(visually) charicter.

I think the best part of his DCAU adaptation was the psychological elements constantly being balanced by the fun visual ones. He really did spend half his time being a spotlight stealing special effect, and the other half being a reclusive organizer, therapist and tortured friend.

Unlike Batman, who only lost his parents, Jonn lost his wife, his kids, and his entire race. There's no one in the Justice League with a more tragic backstory, or anyone with better cause to feel alone in the universe. While these elements were often touched on, I never really felt that they were explored to their fullest. Jonn's family showed up (sort of) in season one, but they seemed rather generic. Of course, the danger remains that Jonn could become a mopey, angsty character, a fate he mostly avoided, to the staff's credit. Yet in many ways I think Jonn has the most interesting psychological profile of any of the leaguers--here is a beng who's lost everything he's ever had, and now faces the challenge of building a new life on another planet, whose ways and people he cannot full accept or assmiliate. If I have any regrets about Jonn, it's that he mostly came off as guy with sad backstory rather than an enormously tragic hero faced with a truly heroic task--finding out how to live again.

I also feel that Martian Manhunter, or J'onn J'onnz is one of the most disrespect charachters outside of the show. He is the least marketable that Warner Brothers feels about. Why do I say this. Look at the DVD's that have been released. He has never been on a cover (and the one he was his face was the only one not shown). It is not like he was not in episodes, he has been in the most out of any charcter, granted it might be short but still. Even Shayera and Flash who combined has one speaking role in Justice League Unlimited have been on more covers than MM.

Title of DVD (characters appearing on cover)

Secret Origins (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman)
Justice On Trial (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash)
Paradies Lost (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman)
Starcrossed (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Hawkgirl)
The Brave and The Bold (all featured, but J'onn is the only one whose face you cannot see)
Justice League: Seasons 1 and 2 he is not on the cover, unless you take the sleeve off Granted, I know you have to put the big three on there, but J'onn has gotten no love in any of these DVD covers, and this is the main thing when one buys the DVD and is not familiar with the series.

Maybe this is why this thread is needed
