After 3 days of re-formatting my hard drive over and over and re-installing 3 different OS's over and over, I think my computer has finally, for the first time in its life, reached a stable situation. :D Of course, I bet I just jinxed myself. :( I guess I'll see once I start installing some games.

People, save yourself the time & trouble. Never get a Compaq!

I feel you pain. About half of the PC's I get in to repair are Compaqs. :(

ok...I'm pretty sure I've said this in another thread...

but..

COMPAQS ARE EVIL!!

EVIL!

So...What OS did you finally settle on? (or was this a battle of the Windows versions...bleh)

You know, I've been thinking lately I should switch to a Mac or something differernt. I would if they werent so useless though, so it wound up being a battle between Windows. 98, which continued to be Mariah Carey-like unstable. XP, which wouldnt even install, because of an error. And ME, which is now my OS of choice.

WHAT!!

Ok, XP is true;y the most evil of Windows Versions.
ME was stable for me...till it completely killed my computer forcing me to re-install. It's Silent but deadly!
98 SE is the best of the bad...I had it...Till I went with linux. =D

An Amiga helped make the TTA short Video Arcade Blues an Amiga made the early 3D stuff for Babylon 5. When I had to do some video editing for a project the the equipment center spent weeks tring to get the PC to work right with the capture card then I turned to my Amiga and it did it with no fuss.

Windows is useless compaired to the Amiga and the Mac since most of the time Windows is unhappy about something or other and you have to spend time fixing it, time you could be doing real work.

Well, I meant useless in that in a windows dominated world, you often have to wait an extra year or so to get the same software on the Mac or LINUX or etc. Or that there's exponentially more software choices for windows machines than anything else. It wasnt meant as an insult.

I definitely agree Windows is useless. I hate windows and I hate computers. I'm going to grow up and be a Luddite. There. :p

Sigh. I'd kill to get off Windows, but I like having every major program coming to the platform. Which only perpetuates its dominance, I know.

I'm afraid that is why I also I keep an IBM compat around even though it is the tool of the devil. At the heart of the IBM compat is nothing more then hotrodded late 70's technology. And the media act like Bill Gates is the father of the PC when it is really Steve Wozniak, Jay G. Miner (Jay Miner is also the father of the game console) and to a lesser extent Jack Tramiel and Steve Jobs. All Bill Gates did was port Basic and run Microsoft, Hell I bet Jay Miners dog Mitchy did more good for the computer industry then Gates.

Ok naraht, ur SBD prediction is unfortunately coming true. :( IE has begun to crash every 5 minutes on me. I'm putting my computer back on probation.

umm...sorry?

Win ME hit me hard...it crashed, then it wouldn't let me boot....it would just freeze up...even if I tried safe mode.

I didn't have restore disks...had to get a copy of Win 98 (which didn't like some of my newish hardware...)

*sigh*

I'm pretty happy with Linux, I just wish it had better multimedia support (video players specifically)

I don't know what to say, I don't have a computer, do all my stuff at the library, and am writing this at one of two that I use for the internet...I believe that someday, soon, I will get a computer with all the bells and whistles...Only one real concern, is privacy, and cookies, (not the kind you eat) I love these machines that allow interaction with anyone instantaneous, even from the library.... thanks for allowing this input...Stuart

Well...you can disable cookies...
or you can set you computer up t tell you when it's sending a cookie...
Or you can be like most people and Just forget about it...

Frankly, the companies using cookies to track you, aren't really interested in YOU per-se, just how many people are coming here, and where are they going.
