I got this from the 'Entertainment Today' mailing at Shagmail.com . I thought it was pretty amusing.

THE YEAR’S DUMBEST PEOPLE AND THINGS

The Rev. Jerry Falwell tops MAD Magazine’s list of “The Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2001.” The evangelist receieved the dubious honor for blaming the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 on "the abortionists, feminists, gays and lesbians." "We thought Falwell had reached his personal pinnacle of dumbness a few years ago when he accused the Teletubbies of promoting homosexuality," said MAD co-editor John Ficarra. "Give the guy credit, we underestimated him." The MAD editors point out that the millennium is off to an extraordinarily dumb start. "The botched presidential election made 2000 a very dumb year,” said Ficarra, ”but between Falwell's moronic comments after Sept. 11, the Gary Condit affair and the XFL debacle, 2001 was even
dumber!"

The previous winners of MAD's "dumbest thing of the year" were Monicagate (1998), The Y2K Panic (1999) and last year's presidential election.

Yeah, I was reading that issue today at my school's library where I'm posting right now. I loved the Eminem & Elton John part. :D;):P

Funny they should mention #20. That is the exact reason I don't read their magazine anymore.

Maybe that's why she's doing a movie

Being a NASCAR fan, I don't think their "safety record" is one of the dumbest things of last year. Tragic that we lost some very fine drivers, not dumb or funny. I know it's all in fun, but some things you just don't make fun of...

I'm surprised al Qaeda isn't on the list. They were dumb on a galactic scale. "We hate you so much we will murder thousands of your civilians, destroy your public aircraft and national landmarks, and imply that this is deserved and your fault when you call us to task for it. And God will protect us, even though we use these tactics because we wouldn't last five minutes in a real combat situation." Buh-bye!

Yeah, Andrew Sullivan and a few others made the same suggestion. :) But I guess Mad was worried about seeming . . . insensitive?

Glitter didn't make the grade either. Maybe it was too obvious?

Maybe we'll see Britney's movie there next year.

I don't see the big deal about Mad having ad snow. The book is costly to make and it's sales aren't enough to keep it up as an ad free magazine. The ads haven't effected the quality of the writers or artists. I really don't mind the ads - I just sklip over them. If these ads keep MAD afloat - then that's fine. I really like the magazine, with or without the ads.
