[indent]Animenewsnetwork.com reports the Academy has reversed its decision and now Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust will be eligible to be nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. It had initially been denied due to procedural issues (it was not also submitted for Best Picture as requried), but now things have been worked out. The actual nominations will be announced mid-February. For more information see the link and article below.
[indent]I wonder if this would make a good in-flight movie? I assume it is action-oriented, but it is probably pretty bloody if the title is any indication.

According to a press release issued by Urban Vision Entertainment today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reversed its decision on Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust's eligibility for nomination for an Academy Award in the the Best Animated Feature Film category.
The Academy originally denied Bloodlust's eligibility because Urban Vision failed to submit the film for consideration for the "Best Feature Film" category. Academy regulations require that any movie submitted to the Best Animated Feature Film category also be submitted to the Best Feature Film category. Unaware of this regulation, Urban Vision saw no reason to submit Bloodlust to the Best Feature category.
After the Academy informed Urban Vision that Bloodlust was rejected, and why it was rejected, Urban Vision appealed to the Academy to reverse the decision.
Urban Vision's press release:
As of December 12, 2001 Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was denied Academy consideration for the category of Best Animated Feature Film. Upon subsequent review, the Academy has decided to allow eligibility for award consideration to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The film will participate with the nine other eligible films in the Academy screening process for the Best Animated Feature Film Category.
For clarity, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust has been found to be eligible for nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Animated Feature Film Category. Bloodlust has not yet been nominated, the final nominees will be announced by the Academy at a later date.

EVen though this has nothing to do with Toonami.........

I glad they decide to reverse it, also, this also mean that the Academy Award (old geezers) believe that animation are not just for kids anymore, well I hope they believe.

[indent]It has to do with Toonami if it is a potential in-flight movie!

A potential, but they have to edit it to heck.

"Heck" Rated-PG language, I'll never get used to

They probably couldn't even call it Bloodlust on Toonami.

They'd have to replace "blood" with "tea", and "lust" with "friendship"

Thus:

Vampire Hunter D: Tea Friendship

Actually, we were discussing this at work this morning. While up against titles like Shrek, Monsters Inc. etc., the odds of it getting the nod are nominal... the implications, however, are that this could go a long way to help further establish Japanese anime's presense in the North American film market. Especially with anime still largely scoffed at by the Hollywood media, having an anime title get atleast a nomination would have considerable impact on the Japanese anime N.American market. So infact, this is good news for our industry.

This definelty going to help the anime movie industry, no more just Pokemon movie to get a wide released, heck  Sony may even decide to wide released Cowboy Bebop, helping anime even more.

They should have did this Animation Academy Award thing when Princess Mononoke was in theater, I'm pretty sure its a sure bet to win.

honestly if you want to see the toonami version you would be better off waiting for the dvd to come out, who knows when but it will probably be worth the wait.

p.s. I HATE SHREK =\

How long would it be on Toonami? 3 mintues? Maybe 3 and a half?

And, Rated PG = Hell. They say Hell all the time in rated PG movies. Didn't you watch Shrek?

I'll keep my fingers crossed that it gets nominated, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Folk at the Academy don't have a clue, like most people who aren't certified fanboys(not meant in a bad way.)

People who aren't like us don't even see the samething we do. When they see a cartoon they wanna be amused so they can say something like, "Oh! Oh! Look it that! That's zany and lovable!"

More than likely still think anime is Japanese porn. I swear if they see a single nipple in Bloodlust they'll never consider anime ever again.

That is great news... likelyhood of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust actually winning the award is very slim but like others have already said... this is VERy good for the anime industry if it at least gets the nomination.

I have not yet seen this particular movie, but I was wondering if those who have think it is a good enough movie deserving to win. I have seen Vampire Hunter D and thought it was a great movie and I am curious to know if the sequal is just as good as the original. :)

God I love Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (or Tea Friendship). Take the original VHD, add greatly improved Animation, a few more characters, and some of the best scenery I've seen and you got one kick ass movie. I'm so happy I saw it in theaters (twice... heh) and I'm anticipating the DVD release (already have it preordered at Amazon).

As for its Toonami viability... uh.... no. Never. Ever.

As for its viability for an Oscer... well, somehow I'll doubt it. But ya never know, crazier things have happened (Like Shakespear in Love winning best picture).

What you talking about JC, isn't anime Japanese porn.

I'm pretty sure the Academy will be open-minded when it come to judging Vampire Hunter D.

They DO have to watch it first, don't they?

Has the Emmy committee ever WATCHED the Simpsons before giving it an award, let alone any of the nominees?

I rest my case.

Well, according to Carl Macek, whom I inquired with on the subject...
ANY film can be submitted for "consideration". The process is two-fold. First submission and then elimination to create the final list - the "nominees" (this could be a number between 3 to 5). Then a panel of industry experts who are members of the academy in a specific discipline review the nominated films and vote on the "best" film in the category. Thus cinematorgraphers vote for best cinematorgraphy, actors vote for actors. However all members vote for "best film". I do not know the details regarding "Best animated film". I do not think there is a big animation contingent in the academy. This could be a situation where a few dozen people determine the winner. I used to be on the Emmy nominating committee for animation awards and the rules are very similar.

The All-Mighty has spoken.

Would that be the Carl Macek of Robotech fame/infamy?

Since CC referred to him as "The All-Mighty" I'd say so. :)

I thought so... his name is brought up frequently (and not so kindly) in a mailing list I subscribe to (AnimEigo's). Especially now that they finally got their Macross box set out.
