View Full Version : The REAL reason today's cartoons get away with those things...

like gludimus maximus visible, snot hanging out, etc. is because Cartoon Network LETS them. CN has control over these shows, but unfortunatly has no control over Looney Tunes. Sure they'll edit a suicide gag, but I could understand that. But, a blackface gag is an edit done by WB's carelessness. WB doesn't watch CN's shows for the most surprising reason... THEY DON'T HAVE CARTOON NETWORK! As weird as it may seem, but the people of WB don't get this channel, so they don't know what type of content the station uses, that explains all those senseless edits. And BTW, not ALL cartoons get away with everything. Nickelodeon has banned a couple of Angry Beavers episodes only because gun scenes were involved. Now you guys know why I hate Nickelodeon.
-Brandon "oh, why must they ban an episode of The Angry Beavers?! Why?! What did they ever do to the audience? What? What? What?" Pierce
THEY DON'T HAVE CARTOON NETWORK!
I suppose that makes sense, but how do you know that?
It does explain why Scooby, the laundry guy from Rocky and Bullwinkle, and the Powerpuffs can impersonate, or be steriotypical Asians, but Tex Avery's characters can't (even though I think "Magical Miestro" was censored by CN, unless WB demanded that be censored)

Man oh man, that's the best point I heard all day! Those Cartoon Network shows get away with tons of stuff that gets cut in LT and MGM cartoons. I have yet to see a suicide gag in a Cartoon Cartoon, but there are plenty of hacked body parts and naked butts to go around. Why is it that no one ever includes The Powerpuff Girls in their complaints about cartoon violence? That show has blood and knocked out teeth and chopped up bodies and everything! Let's not even go into the homosexual villain HIM! I don't think WB knows its business partners too well. But they sure do know how to chicken out and disappoint fans!

He posted at the old board inder the name MelBlanc. He moved away, and doesn't have a computer anymore. He happens to live near WB. And I got the info from him.

Why do they edit the most retarted thinks? Cartoons are supposed to make people laugh. Not make them worry if it'll offend somebody. This truly makes me SICK with s*i* like Ed, Edd, 'N Eddy getting away with poo poop (:D) jokes while Drip Along Daffy's Ending gets censored? DOES THIS MAKE ANY F*C*I*G SENSE CN? NO THERE TO BUSY SHOWING SHIRLEY FRICKING TEMPLE ADS!This summer I will be going to my sister's house in Georgia so on my way I may egg Ted Turner's car (If I ever find it) Well that's enough ranting for one day. :D Bye.

What is it with gay devils in cartoons these days? There's Red from Cow and Chicken, Him on Power Puff Girls, and even South Park has Satan taking it up the back door from Saddam Hussein! I know it's an abomination in God's eyes and all that...but I think Friz Freleng would plotz if he saw these guys! He had a bulldog devil in one short, I think, but that's about as far as he stretched the hell and devil mythos....

Also, there's the fact that the Looney Tunes have a bit of a reputation, many of the characters have have been around for 60+ years, and I think that they're afraid of tarnishing that reputation and said reputation's merchandising value. The only reason people like some of the Cartoon Cartoons like Cow and Chicken is because of the gross humor, butt jokes, and so on. If anything, controversial jokes helped it's reputation (at least, among those who liked that kind of humor.) Also, most of the Cartoon Cartoons are going to be forgotten within a decade, while it seems that Looney Tunes will be around forever, so taking a risk with something less long-term (Cow and Chicken) is less of a risk. A quick way to summarize is this: How many articles on the June Bugs censored 11 have you seen in general newspapers or online news sites, and how many have you seen on those episodes of The Angry Beavers that you mentioned? People have reacted more to June Bugs because they care more about the Looney Tunes, and so they have more potential to cause controversy.
Also, the point you made about Nickelodeon...yeah, I haven't been following them lately, but after the whole Spumco incident I've been kind of not happy at them. And, as you probably know, there was quite a bit of censorship with the Spumco Ren and Stimpy's, too.

Ren and Stimpy wasn't Ren and Stimpy when Nick brought it back. I saw a few episodes that were censored and I could've fainted(or just cursed a lot). In case you haven't figured it out already, I HATE CARTOON CENSORSHIP!!! Censorship in general, but cartoons above all. Did anyone see this censor job in Ren and Stimpy? There was a very large worm spitting stuff out of it's butt, but all you could see was a blurry oval shape covering the stuff? Also, there was another episode in which Ren and Stimpy take a bath with some grown people. The entre bath scene was cut! As far as I can remember, the only thing that happened was Stimpy farted in the tub, making bubbles. What's the SPUMCO INCIDENT? And why does Nickelodeon suck so badly now!?

Well, basically Nick fired Spumco over charges that they were being too gross, then set up Games to continue the show, being just as gross (if not more) but more gross-disgusting than gross-funny. Mostly, it was done by some people at Nick to impress superiors, not because of any problem with Spumco.
There is actually a whole episode that was banned, "Man's Best Friend." It has George Liquor buying Ren and Stimpy from a pet store and teaching them, at one point bludgeoning Ren with an oar. As far as I know, it was never shown. Also, the pilot was edited, in the opening credits you can see some of the removed scenes (Ren washing his mouth out in a toilet, perhaps others that I can't remember). In Powdered Toast Man, PTM burned the Constitution by mistake, and that was removed. I'm sure some of this sounds terrible, but if you know Spumco, you know their style and how it is done in a comical, inoffensive manner (unlike Games).

There was a Ren and Stimpy episode done by Games, titled IT'S A DOG'S LIFE. It was basically just a reworking of MAN'S BEST FRIEND. It had a master adopting Ren and Stimpy, and torturing R&S for the whole cartoon, eventually ending with R&S being killed. This was even more violent than MAN'S BEST FRIEND. George Liquor would never do that. Just proves that Nickelodeon's just a bunch of hypocrites.
Some other hack jobs done to the Spumco R&S's by Nick:
DOG SHOW - Whenever George Liquor's name was mentioned, the word 'Liquor' was bleeped out, and removed whenever the would would appear. Also, a shot of a tail sticking out of George's butt was cut out.
STIMPY'S BIG DAY/THE BIG SHOT - At the end of part one, a microphone was to be shoved in Stimpy's mouth, but Nick made them change that scene (because they thought the microphone in Sitmpy's mouth was phallic) so that the microphone gets shoved into his nose.
ROBIN HOEK - The original ending had Ren marrying Stimpy and kissing him, but Nick cut it out.
NURSE STIMPY - A lot of scenes were cut. One had Dr. Leech (who was a real leech) lie on top of Ren and suck out all of his bad blood. Another one had Dr. Horse ("No, sir, I didn't like it") examine Ren's swollen glands. This cartoon had so many cuts to it, John K. took his name off the credits of this episode.
STIMPY'S INVENTION - Stimpy raising his arm, and Ren licking off the filth and dirt from under his arm was cut out.
OUT WEST - Abner saying "Bring the kids next time!" after they all sing the Hanging song was cut out (because it made a reference to hanging children).
RUBBER NIPPLE SALESMEN - The entire scene with Ren and Stimpy visiting George Liquor's house.

John K. said that he is currently trying to get the rights to make online episodes of Ren and Stimpy. Let's hope these are new and uncensored!

If it's true, then great. I don't care even if they are the same episodes, I'll just be happy to see them again.

The Cartoon Cartoons get rated G or Y7 mostly, same as the Looney Tunes. Yeah, I agree it stinks dirty diapers that Looney Tunes are getting scissored left and right. But CC have started to feel the ire of the WB or someone 'cuz several Cartoon cartoons have been removed from the air. Dexter's Lab Barbequor and Cow And Chicken's Buffalo Gals and No Smoking. I imagine someday, someone of authority will notice the erect penis shot in a certain C&C episode (unnamed to not give lurking would be censors ammo) So they aren't getting away with murder anymore.
I suspect it has more to do with the recent AOL takeover of Time/Warner and the fact some of these cartoons are getting merchandised not just in the WB store, but fast food chains as well. Remember no one was censoring cartoons until 1: Congress told television it had to program for children, so they brushed off old cartoons. 2: then the studios started marketing merchadise of the characters to children.
It's getting somewhat better. I serious doubt today anyone would freaked about about Ralph Baski's <sp?> Might Mouse cartoons. It seems the idea that cartoons aren't just kiddie fodder has finally sunk in. Somewhat.

Spumco was eventually able to regain rights to George Liquor from Nick, once Nick had the rights to him after he appeared on the show. Hopefully they'll be able to get back R&S in a similar way. Nick sure isn't using those guys now, not even in reruns, so hopefully Spumco can win them back. Back in the day, I never would've thought that Rugrats and Doug would outlast R&S...it just shows what a terrible job Nick did.
