Only one that comes to mind right now is No Man's Land, a MASSIVE Batman/Robin/Nightwing/Batgirl/Huntress saga that involved a huge earthquake in Gotham City... This story arc resulted in a completely new Gotham City, Batman, Batgirl, and a heckuva lot of other stuff.
Unfortunately, I haven't read all of it, so I can't really explain everything here.

Wow, something involving Barbara Gordon and Huntress must be huge. Is this No Man's Land story in a paperback booket?

It's available in paperback...comic wise..in like 6 editions....and at $10 ea..that's $60..
So, if you just wanna catch up by reading..they have a novel of it (which I hear is better) that is only $20..

No, the novel is not better.
No Man's Land is available in several paperback volumes, I heard. It's one huge story.

The No Man's Land storyline was very important to Gotham city and worth reading, But I don't think It's necessary to have read all the trade paperbacks about it. I think you'd be fine with the last two, but if you want a detailed opinion, Just ask anyone working at your local comics shop.
As for what else has happened?
The secret files Batman was keeping on all the other superheroes was stolen By Ra's al Ghul and used to nearly kill everyone
Batman was kicked out of the JLA, and subsequently reinstated
Bruce adopted Dick Grayson as his son
Alfred and Robin Quit
Nightwing and Barbara Gordon Finally hooked up
Commisioner Gordon was shot-He then retired.
I'm sure there's lots more, but for the short of it that's all that comes to mind.
