The heart of good anime is intelligent writing and great story telling that doesn't talk down to the audience. That's why I love the anime I love, anyway.

Same here. Regardless of the animation, the plot is what draws me in. The other stuff is my dessert.

Can't say that I mind cute girls and giant robots...
But I agree with Cal.
You might get more responses if you put this poll up on the Anigen board,

I think the heart of anime is a persistant story-line. Or even semi-persistant, as in the case of Cowboy Bebop. Our true appeal in shows like Dragonball Z, Robotech, and even Pokemon is an evolving storyline. Much as I hate the fact that many great shows end after about 12-24 episodes. I appreciate the fact that they planned this in advance and that I will have a feeling of closure when the series ends.
I also feel there's something to be said about big eyes.

I gotta go with the others. The eyecandy may be what gets me first interested, but it's the plot or the characters that keep me hooked.
Honestly, if you think robots and big-eyed girls define anime, than what defines american animation? Sing-songy acting (if not flat out musicals like nearly all Disney stuff) and poorly animated characters who all more or less look the same? ROFL I mean, to me, the biggest difference in american and japanese animation is the attention paid to the characters themselves. In american animation, all too often we gloss over what's driving the characters, since it's just a cartoon for kids anyway. The Japanese at least realize that adults will be able to appreciate the characters, even if they are all young (which quite a few animes tend to have, a very young cast), because they tend to be much more fleshed out...

Oh, sure, I'm fond of the mecha! :D
But what I really like about anime is the overall high quality of the animation and especially the good writing.

Cute girls and mecha are more like a stereotype for anime, and not the bread-and-butter.
If the artwork is good but the story is bad, I won't really like it. If the story is good and the artwork isn't wonderful, it doesn't matter to me. If the artwork and story are both good, then huzzah!
I prefer to look beyond the flash and glitter to find an anime worth loving ;)

This is an anime stereotype more than anything else, just so you know. ;)
