View Full Version : When you're OLD...

I was cruising down the street, one day, with my buddy Erik. See, Erik is a "rapper" guy...Him & his "Jay-Z" music. I'm not all that much into rap, myself, but when I'm in his car, I have no other choice. Hehe. Anyway. It eventually came to me, & I asked him...
"Can you imagine yourself, at the age of 70, still driving down the road, bobbing your head, listening to this stuff?"

He said yes.

Haha, true story. But, anyway, can you imagine yourself, when you're "of age", still doing the things you do now?

I can see himself, still walking into comic shops, picking up the latest hell-spawn gore comic. Hehe! Or browsing the action figure isles of Toys R Us. ;) Listening to my Dave Mathews till dawn, then sleeping in untill I HAVE TO get up.

Well, 30 anyways...
Yes, I agree with your goombah. He probably will be listening to Jay-Z when he's 70. Mainly because radio programmers are just salivating at the prospect of coast-to-coast Original Gangsta oldies stations.
And before you LOL, have you ever met a radio programmer? To say they might have an IQ point somewhere is being generous.
Besides, they don't care about points... what's the IQ share? [bad injoke OFF]
As for me, I've been reading Superman and Batman off-and-on since I was 7. Who'da thunk? :D

I've actually given this some thought in the past. My current exercise regiment consists of one arm push-ups and martial arts stuff, running etc. One day not long ago i had the thought. "Gee, It's gonna suck when I'm old and feeble and can't do this stuff anymore. What's the point really." Yep, that's how I think.

But, then I realized that it was good that I was doing all this now, because it would just get harder and harder to start later in life. And I assume that the things I like to do, as well as my mentality, would change a lot by then. So much so, pehaps, that that I'd enjoy a walk in the park more than a few rounds with a punching bag.

Basically I believe that once you start getting old you stop changing so much. When your young your style of clothing, taste in music, etc, can change from month to month. As you get older you keep finding things you consider to be more important; like career, house, family, cars, vacations. These things become compounded and eventually you start trying to reclaim the childhood joy that's been lost. That's when you start looking towards retirement. Once your old you've worked for decades and are just ready to take it easy. You've probably got grandkids and more money than you know what to do with. At that point there's plenty of time for the simple pleasures you didn't appreciate as a child and had no time for as an adult.

when im old im going to be a total recluse and live in the old dilapidated house on the block and is supposed to be haunted, then im going to scare all the kids when they walk by by peering out the curtain of the attic window or something like that.

Not really. Most music these days are aimed at young people. By age thirty, if you're not repulsed by the lyrics alone of rap, you're probably a criminal or a delinquent.

As I teeter on the ledge toward 50, I can safely say that I will always love much of the things I loved at 19, tho I have become more particular in my dotage. I still love comics, but do prefer those from the silver age to much of what is out there now. I will always love animation, and I actually enjoy the greater variety that the decades have brought. I'll always love big lizards and spiders (I still have a big iguana--had them since I was 12), robots, and writing sci-fi/fantasy. And pizza. Age, after all, is a state of mind, and most of us remain forever 19 in our heads!

I have far too many interests that are varied for me to really know if I will still like the stuff I like now when I am 70. I really tend to go in cycles, where I will absorb everything I can on one spefic genre or style of music or movies by a certain director or what have you. Right now, for example, I am really heavy in to the music by Angelo Badalamenti, who has got to make some of the most innovative and beautiful music I have ever heard (he is well known for his soundtracks he does for David Lynch's movies but he has done so much more). While I don't think I will ever tire of Angelo's music (heck, I started listening to him back when Twin Peaks first came on the air and haven't tired since) I might suddenly decide I have to listen to all the music by another composer or artist next.

But there are some people I used to listen to that I can't get into much anymore. Prince for one. I used to listen to his records almost non stop. Heck, I even committed to memory (and I am telling the literal truth here) every single song on every single record he did in the order they appeared on each album, and could even write down the names of the songs from memory in the order they appeared on each album, from the first album he did to the latest. But for some reason, I just don't listen to his music much anymore. It doesn't do for me what the music of Nick Cave, Angelo Badalamenti, Leonard Cohen, and others still does for me. But you never know, I might go back to some of those old Prince songs when I am 70.

I do think what we like when we are young stays with us for the rest of our lives. It will remind us of better days, bring back memories of friends and events and good times, even if it's gangster rap or punk music or folk music or whatever. If it was important to us when we were young, chances are it will be even more so when we are older.

I imagine that i'll still be into comics and superheros, and all the cool stuff i like now :D. I'm sure i'll be older, wiser, and more mature (maybe :p ), but i guess i'll have pretty much the same interests.

I don't see myself living past the age of 30. Sounds morbid, but I have a feeling something will happen sooner or later, probably a car accident. Call it a premonition. I've had several of those, and they've always been right on the mark. Creeps the living H-E-double toothpicks out of me. I see myself young with someone, but growing old...

Then again, look at the people I dig: Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin... notice a trend here? In no particular order: Die young, die tragic, die pretty, die at the top.

And then again, I don't think anyone at my age and where I'm at ever think they will make it to middle age.

I bet that now after I've said this, I'll outlive all of you by 20 years. :D Why does it always work like that? Another mystery of life, I suppose.

If I do make it, yeah, I'll like the same things. I have classic tastes, stuff that never goes out completely. Somethings migrate to the cultural underground, but they are still there.

Thank you for allowing me to wax philosophical.

If you guys think its crazy to see 70-year old guys listening to rap, then what about Death Metal? Kreator,Napalm Death,Morbid Angel,Entombed.. LOL It would be bugged out to see old fogies still trying to headbang to that!

Anyways, I'm feeling what Calhoun said about Angelo Badalamenti. Instrumental music is what I've been listening to a lot lately, most notably, Ennio Morricone film scores. I can easily look into the future and picture myself listening to that stuff when my gut starts to grow. :o

I will watch cartoons until I die! I've grown up watching them and can't imagine not seeing someting animated at least once a day (mainly old Simpsons reruns). Yeah, some people think I'm a weirdo for buying anime and sentai and getting excited at the prospect of it, but I say "to Hades with you". At least I'm happy for a couple of hours during the day

I swear to God, I'll still look 12.

I'm not saying this to brag. There's nothing good about looking 12 when you're not.

But I don't know if this is a good or bad thing :p

@@@@@@@@@hhhhh, I'd say it's a good thing. :D

I don't have to worry about "when I'm old". The asylum gives these great packages that last for about 64 years. 'Nuff said.

It's a good thing. You'll be the envy of anti-aging product users everywhere. :D

When I'm old... Kinda like TGS, I'd like to do something great and flame out early, rather than live a long, piddling sort of life. But at the same time, I'm not actually looking forward to dying, soooo I am conflicted. As for my tastes, I'm sure they'll bob and weave all over the place. Heck, my tastes have already changed a lot from when I was 15 or when I was 12.

I'm 25(as of today, NOOOOOOO!!!!), and I still watch cartoons. Power Rangers is one of my favorite shows.

I get it from my dad, who's like... 56 and still I can walk in on him watching Jackie Chan Adventures.

You only turn old and dull if you want to. :)

...my mom likes the Jackie Chan Adventures!

...but when I'm old...I really don't think I'll be that different. I hope to be a successful movie writer and director when I'm older (I'm working on a movie now...although I have no experience whatsoever!). I still see myself watching my old Jay and Silent Bob movies, listening to Marilyn Manson, and playing video games :D

I'm 21 one now(be 22 in Feb.), and I plan to still watch cartoons, play videogames, and reading comics no matter how old I am. My main goal is to find that Mrs. Right so I can start a family of my own and hopefully have grandkids as well.
