I was just thinking about this. It's not a great movie by any account, but it wasn't bad. Probably the worst thing is that it had such potential, but the plot just fell apart.
Still, I can't think of a better video game movie. Mario Bros is probably next, followed by Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. I can't think of anymore.
Do you guys think there are any better? Please say so!

MARIO BROTHERS IS NEXT? MARIO BROTHERS SHOULD BE NEAR THE BOTTOM!
Mortalk Kombat is, and always will be, the best movie based off of a video game because it's the only such movie to actually be better than mediocre.
I don't really count FF as based off the video game as it was not. Then again, one of FF's charming features is that no game is related to the other. It's actually a good thing that the movie wasn't really based off of FF or else we'd have to deal with cliched characters, boring, endless storylines, chocobos, and the most mind-numbing action sequences of all time.

The first Motal Kombat movie is the only decent video game movie ever made.

Well, Mortal Kombat had even less plot that MB which actually may be a good thing in movies like that. And it was lots of fun to watch. I probably agree with you on that one.

Sticking to my opinion on this one. for the reason you stated, they're all different. Of course, the movie wasn't really fantasy, it was SciFi. Still, it was named after the game, so that's gotta count for something.

Don't forget about the hours of levelling up! :D

I liked the first Mortal Kombat movie much better than Final Fantasy (I won't even talk about the second one, it was a complete joke). It didn't have the high graphics, but it was entertaining, understandable by people who weren't familiar with the game, and followed the Mortal Kombat plot fairly well. Since every FF game is different, really, The Spirits Within only resembled the game by name, and by vague themes (Like spirits). I was disappointed by the FF movie, but of course, I loved the graphics. :)
Double Dragon was another movie based off a game. It too was mediocre.
I think Legend of Zelda would make a fairly decent movie :)

"Don't forget about the hours of levelling up!"
Sir, you are a great American (I hope) and I commend you for your wit.
I just watched "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" and I must say, that movie stunk! Sure, visually, it was impressive but the plot (or lack there of) was only so-so. I loved "Mortal Kombat" when I first saw it, but the second one was horrible. I heard New Line is making a third "MK" film.
I remember reading a few years back about studios eyeing "Twisted Metal" as a movie. I loved the first two games and "Twisted Metal: Black" was good, but I doubt they'd be able to pull the game off as a movie. Then again, maybe they can.

I hope they don't try a TM movie. It is so unworkable. Metroid and Doom have better chances of making a reasonable movie than TM.
The only VG I think that could really work as a movie is Metal Gear. Hell, MGS2 is half-movie (a damn good one as well), why not?

I agree, a MGS movie would work out very well if done correctly. We also seem to have a Resident Evil movie on the way as well.

It would work well with animation, but I don't think it would live action.

Hmmm... I'll defer for now, since I've got my hopes up for the Resident Evil movie. Foolish of me I know, but we'll see...

I heard that they're making a Crazy Taxi movie. I have a right to be scared right?
I don't watch many game based movies, but FF's biggest flaw was the fact that the plot had alot of potential and it just fell apart.

What in the world would a Crazy Taxi movie be about? Who would be crazy enough to do such a thing?

Want to hear something really scary, well everyone probably already knows this, they're already making another Mortal Kombat movie. I actually liked the first one, but the sequel was way beyond horrifying. As for other video game movies, Tomb Raider wasn't too bad.
