View Full Version : Toonami in 2002

For 2K2, what new shows (not old, prexisiting ones) would you like to see Toonami aquire? They can include anime as well, but I'm just going to list some of the shows that I want to see that are made in North America.

It's already been announced that there will be new "Men In Black," "Ninja Turtles," "Ninja Boy" (pilot at least) and "Spider-Man" animated series, as well as a new "Transformers" series tentatively titled "Armada." I'd like to see Toonami aquire at least one of them. It would cost too much to buy them all. It should be noted that all of the listed above are comic based except for "Armada."

I'd also like to see Toonami get a makeover and expand to 8:00 PM or make a Toonami Prime block that would air once a week, consisting of "Samurai Jack," "Justice League" and any other new shows.

Well...all I know is that we are getting that 3rd hour back some time....hopefully....

American shows suck :p

I agree with Coollead on the 3rd hour...But what would they Put in it more dbz?

Please, no more "DBZ." If Toonami expands, it better be new stuff, or stuff that was dropped like "ReBoot."

I'd prefeer to see Toonami get the third hour back, start showing some dropped stuff in there, and then go ahead and pick up some of the shows that Fox never shows, like the first Spiderman cartoon, X-Men or any of the other good action stuff Fox used to show.

I personally want to see some more fantasy anime on Toonami, preferably Record of Lodoss War, the OVA.

And I hope to see a Toonami makeover, without those darn pipes. And the third hour back, of course.

Wilco911

It would be nice to show the Lodoss War OVA's so that those of us just now getting into it on the Reactor can get to see some of the back story, but didn't someone say on the 'old' forums that Sci-Fi has the rights to them?

First off, remove DBZ from the block entirely. No, don't cancel it, but give it its own block. That will make everyone happy. The DBZ fans can still get their endless reruns, and people like me who have watched Toonami turn from good programming into DBZ-athon will have what we want.

Obviously get back the 3rd hour and stop calling that garbage on WB Toonami.

G Gundam should be done by the end of the year, so obviously put that on. We still have Stardust Memory and Candidate for Goddess(like hell I'm calling it by its toned down name) too. Pray that FOX will sell Escaflowne to them. Sean Akins has expressed interest in Nadesico, that would always be nice.

I don't know/care much about that much american animation, well atleast the stuff that Toonami airs, so dunno about that. Its not an all anime block so get atleast some stuff on there for the good of the block/channel :p

I'd want to see Gundam return, and G Gundam and 0083 as well. That would be all the Gundam. Record of Lodoss War and if possible Escaflowne would be new to the block as well, along with a Transformer series (maybe the new one you mentioned) and more Reboot. Batman and Superman would go into rotation with Batman Beyond for 7-8, but keep their newly announced 11-12 slot as well. DBZ would reclaim the 5:00 slot, followed by Dragon Ball at 5:30, or the other way around. Then there would be Tenchi, ReBoot, Big O, Outlaw Star, and maybe some of the non-Gundam new shows. The Midnight Run would be no more, but there would be a 10-2 Saturday Night block of Toonami, which would be an hour Mobile Suit Gundam, an hour Gundam Wing, an hour Outlaw Star, and an hour of a new series, or possibly a run of Bebop or Trigun. They would all be re-edited to fit this timeslot, and they would be treated as an Adult Swim block for anime with the Toonami name. Because of this, it would only be promoted in late night and all that stuff. I know the last bit seems unlikely, but it would be cool even without the re-edits.

I also don't have a particular longing for American toons, though they have the capabilites of reaching the heights of Japanimation. They will likely not impress me on the whole until toons are viewed in a different light over here in the West.

Anyways, if Toonami aquired any of the above mentioned American toons then god bless its little heart. They sound lovely. But I'm weary of the new Spiderman. Hopefully, it won't suffer the same injustice as they new X-Men. The actual movie...deserves better than THAT.

Anime... the gundams should keep coming. If Gundam is the Star Wars of Japan (*cough*weeze*COUGH*) then we should definately have it on our TVs. But I'm rather protective of anime and I'm always skeptical of how it'll be "treated".

As for DBZ...as long as they don't show reruns more than thrice in a row, I won't die. x_x;;;;;;;;;;; It really should get it's own block. That Saturday thing looks like CN's trying the waters of doing that...but i doubt we're that lucky.

Well out of the shows Vincent mentioned: The next Spiderman series is confirmed for MTV, and the Ninja Turtles is going to kidsWB. I suspect that the new MiB series will go to kidsWB too. So from that list I'd like to see William's St. snag Armada (which will reportedly have lots and lots of guns :) ) and while they're at it grab Beast Wars & Machines too. Ninja Boy should be interesting too.

Fox will probably have a strangle hold on Escaflowne for about three more years so that's out. But I'd love to see "Vision of..." on the block. Three more years. *sigh*

They should look into picking up some more movies.

I'd also be interested in seeing what WS could cook up when creating an original action related show.

Giving us the third hour back would be very nice, considering they're going to be cutting back on the Midnight Run.

And they should look into Molly Star-Racer, but only if it has a decent level of action.

Warning: Incoming Pipe Dream
Oh yes, WS should raid Di$ney and free Gargoyles from the clutches of Walt's cold, dead fingers. :D

Armada. Definately Armada. Fox has had their run with Transformers, and I feel that if it got picked up by Warner and put on Toonami they could get away with a little more violence than usual, with Toonami being an action block and all.

And besides...who wouldn't want to see how Toonami would make a TF intro? ;)

:D :D

These are my picks:

Dragon Warrior - It Akira Toriyama stuff! Lately Toonami seems to be going gonzo about Akira's work and overloading the block with it. Well, DW would no doubt be cheap to pick up and the kids would dig it cuz it looks basically like DBZ, but with a fantasy spin. Plus it kills me that it was never finished here in America.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars - I'm no big fan of Sailor Moon, but she was there and a flagship show back in the Golden Age of Toonami. She deserves to finish up her run.

Macross 7 - Fills the much needed "girl anime" stuff that I think makes Toonami a bit brighter of a place. And this I'd actually watch.

The New Robotech Series - Are they finished with this yet? I remember reading rumor of this anime being made. This would be perfect for Toonami.

Mainframe Stuff - Why's Toonami being such a snob to Reboot??? I love that show! That and I loved how they presented Beast Wars all those years ago. Shadow Raiders is other stuff.......

Yu Yu Hakashu - Once DBZ is done, this would be a good fight series to take its place.

Fatal Fury Trilogy - I love and adore this anime and the movie I say along with my friends that it is the perfect anime. It's not the best, but it's the perfect. These along with Street Fighter stuff would be awesome for like a line of movies. They could call the special weekly even, "Toonami: Fight Club!"

Street Fighter II V - Perfect for the Midnight Run. I haven't finished watching it yet, and it's not the best anime I've ever seen, but it would be completely and utterly perfect for the Midnight Run.

That's all I can' think of for now.... one man's Opinion.....

It's being done by WBA. Originally it was rumored/reported that the new show was going to be gritty like the original comics. However with the news that it's going to kidsWB is suspect the grit is gone.

1) Gargoyles 2198 (or any other Gargoyles series) - I'd let Disney do it again, they did a good job before. Williams St. just needs to order more episodes, or one of the spinoff series from them, and make sure Greg Weisman is in charge. Oh, and since Gargoyles 2198 is proposed as a CGI series Disney should have Mainframe do the animation.

2) Molly: Star-Pilot - This anime influenced French series looks like a great way to introduce Toonami to shows from the other other side of the ocean. Plus, the trailer is friggin' amazing.

3) Irresponsible Captain Tylow - This anime series (there is an OAV and TV version) has gotten good reviews from what I have seen and it looks like it would fit Toonami's standards also.

4) The Magical Girl/Pretty Sammy stuff - More of the Tenchi characters, plus it would kind of fill the void left by Sailor Moon.

5) The American stuff Vincent mentioned and whatever other quality stuff is coming down the pipe on these shores that we don't know about yet (Mainframe?).

6) Reboot Season 5, Big O Season 2, More Gundam, etc.

7) Most importantly the return of the third hour.

8) Finally, almost all original Cartoon Network comedic series are branded as Cartoon Cartoons no matter when they are on. I would like to see something similar with Cartoon Network's quality action shows and Toonami. For instance, the current 6 AM hour of Thundercats/Zoids should be branded as Toonami, also the Samurai Jack/Justice League hours, etc. It would be more work for Williams St., but they could recycle some old Toonami between show/commercial material to start off.

"Ninja Boy" is a new comic book series from Wildstorm Comics (which is owned by DC Comics/AOLTW). Here's a description from Wildstorm.com about the series:

"Journey to a mystical, ancient Japan with Nakio, youngest member of the Mugen ninja clan! Nakio is being trained in their secret arts, but in his heart dreams of becoming something...more. All this is put aside when Nakio's first solo mission fails. The evil lord Mikaboshi has set a trap for the youngest Mugen Ninja. Nakio barely escapes with his life only to find his home has been destroyed. Nakio must journey to the center of the Old Forest to find a way to defeat the powerful Mikaboshi. Accompanied by his friend Sake- a furry, foul mouthed, woodland creature with a taste for alcohol- Nakio must overcome Mantis gods, Spider Queens, and black magic to find those that will battle along side him. That is, if Mikaboshi's master assassins don't catch him first!

Ninja Boy is a fast paced martial arts action adventure with a manga flare! Featuring the writing debut of Allen Warner with art by Ale Garza and Dan Norton."

Here's a picture from the comic:
http://news.toonzone.net/images/ninjaboy.jpg

If the series becomes reality, it will be done by Warner Bros. Animation, who are also doing the new "Ninja Turtles" series.

There's one thing that would keep Fatal Fury on Toonami: Mai Shiranui.

It wouldn't be nearly so easy to edit her as it was with Maron in DBZ. Even if they could cover up the cleavage, there really isn't any way to cover up the uhh... "bounciness." And I don't think they could cut her out entirely, either. So unfortunately, it doesn't look like it could ever air on Toonami.

If the trashy Kids'WB! Toonami is gonna continue, it should be renamed Toonami Lite. It should also feature a promo at the end tellign viewers to ehad to CN to watch more Toonami. KWB really screwed up by not doing that. I just with KWB would drop that "Toonami" thing completely.

The 3rd hour back would also be a treat.

JohnCrichton

KidWB Toonami is so... insulting. It's like out of the blue if Star Trek started calling itself Star Wars for no reason, but to just boost ratings.

Man, cartoons are in a pretty jacked up state. The best 'toon production Fox Kids has fallen, Toonami's kinda blaze`, and KidsWB is posing as Toonami!

Yet, thre are still good cartoons all over the place. Strange Dark Age of Cartoons we're in....

Sometimes WB affiliates would cut out the ending of KWB Toonami for some reason, especially WB11. In other places the ending wouldn't be shown due to its early time(Chicago).

One the central time zone I think that KWB and CN Toonami might even overlap (I'm not sure) meaning that Tenchi and Pokemon: Johto are on at the same time.
Someone really needs to check the scheduling at AOL/TW.

I know I've said this on the other board, but I think it would be really cool if Toonami got "Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea".

I watched this when I was little, and loved it. I also remember it being a very cool action show. The animation looked like a crossover between Disney and Hanna Barbara. It also had a surreal tone to it that I don't think I've seen in an animated show since then. Well, I dunno. Samurai Jack gets pretty darn close.

But unfortunately, since Nickelodeon did the dub (The show was originally in french, and new episodes aired aproximately the same time in the US as in France) we'll probably never see it on Toonami. Only hope is that Nick eventually reruns the series.

If anybody wants to look at some info on the show, either to jog your memory or to just get some basic info, there's a very good web page here: http://www2.netdoor.com/~blaster/archives/

[indent]Even in the Central Time Zone, at least here in the Central Time Zone, Kids WB ends when Toonami begins. CN Toonami may start an hour earlier, but so does Kids WB. When announcing when things are the Central time zone is usually ignored, but we here in the region have adapted in our way of life to automatically subtract an hour from programming anouncements.

Nadia
the mid 90's Spiderman
mid 90's X-Men
MiB
Big O, as much as we can get
More Mainframe, especially Reboot
original TMNT
Any and Gargoyles they can get, even if they have to pay Disney what most companies would pay for Gainax or CLAMP stuff
Angelic Layer

Feel free to dispute me, but all of those shows would need no-minimal editing to be perfect for Toonami. :)

There was an all CGI Robotech sequel in production around '98/'99, but it was canned once the Harmony Gold execs realized how much it stunk(they were practically booed off the stage by Robotech fans when they showed test footage at a con). Now the staff of the official Robotech page keep hinting at a new cell based show in the works, but they won't give any details about it.

When the Robotech page first went into beta testing they put out some pictures from what they said was the latest production(well after Robotech 3000, the CGI project, was canned) but have since then put them in the Robotech 3000 section of their gallery.

I sure hope Toonami gets around to airing Pilot Candidate sometime this year, the reviews have been kinda mixed from what I've seen, but at least it's something new. I like to see more ReBoot's show up on Toonami this year, but that seems unlikely given their apparent lack of enthusiasm towards it last time around. It also be nice to see the end of DBZ before Sept. rolls around. How many times can Toonami air those same 43 episodes already?
