Of all of Miyazaki's animated characters so far, which 5 (or even 6)
are currently your personal favorite and please say why, for each character named ?

For me, the answer is very easy: Arsene Lupin III from series 1 Lupin III, Castle of Cagliostro, and two episode of series 2 Lupin III.

Lupin is a perfect example of a what I like in adult male characters in anime: a cool looking guy who, along with having some good moments action-wise, has a side to him that is very comical.

Porco Rosso (Fio is sort of a tie). I mean, after I watched that movie, I fell in love with it (and it's since been my fave Miyazaki film to date) and the characters are all wonderful. I feel for Porco. He's angst without being super angst and Fio just has this wonderful, optimistic personality. The two have great chemistry together and frankly, I'd rather like those two together then Porco/Gina....err...yea. I'm a sucker for opposite attracts, I suppose.

1. Jiji - Kiki's Delivery Service: A cat with attitude, what's not to like.
2. Kiki - Kiki's Delivery Service: Just an all around sweet girl.
3. The Baron - Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns: A gentleman's gentleman.
4. Totoro - My Neighbor Totoro: For a role with no words, he's able to convey a whole lot.
5. Taeko - Only Yesterday: This role was just so real and nostalgic. One could feel they were living it as it played out.

I realize that some might argue that some are not directly Miyazaki related but they are Studio Ghibli related. So sue me.

Lupin III. Goemon is a close second though.

Kiki for being cute and sweet.
Ursala becuase she's kinda hot in a "gir next dorr" sort of way and unlike many female anime characters, she actually has a butt and kips.

The ENTIRE cast of Spirited Away.

The cat bus! Because it's a cat... that's a bus!

Gina from Porco Rosso. She epitomizes class and sophistication. And I love how she carries a torch for Porco. it gets me every time.

Kiki because... she's sweet and adorable, and I cosplay her. ^..^

I also love many of the minor characters in Spirited Away, such as the radish spirit, the soot balls, and the lamppost. It's the small touches like that that make Miyazaki so great.

Does Baron count as a Miyazaki character? If so, definitely Baron! What could be sweeter than a courtly cat?

It'd have to be a tie between Porco and Lupin. I like Porco for his reckless attitude, his subtle speech and his feelings towards others around him. He is also able to admit he's wrong which is rare with most angsty characters.

Lupin just has that certain edge to him balancing out the suave with goofball elements. It was also nice to see his level of devotion and kindness in Cagliostro.

5. Kiki - Miyazaki's most iconic heroine
4. Lady Eboshi - One of the strongest women in animation
3. Jiji - Duh!
2. Marco - Miyazaki's best protagonist
1. The Sootballs - Double Duh!

I had a different choice in mind when I first read the title, but several posts have reminded me that Cagliostro is also a Miyazaki film. So I have to go with Lupin III.

I was going to say Pazu from Laputa, but he's now in second place.

Nausicaa. She's easily the coolest Miyazaki heroine ever. Princess, expert fighter, brilliant scientist, messiah, great with animals, totally hot in tight pants. What more could you want? :D But she's also a three dimensional character. The anxiety she shows in the lab scene, where she misses her father and fears for her research, is a memorable scene.

Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service...he was funny(and was voiced by one of my favorite SNL actors, the late Phil Hartman,in the dub),and cute....I like most cat characters, but have kinda a soft spot for black cats...

As for Studio Ghibli's non-Miyazaki films,my favorite character is the Baron from The Cat Returns(and Whisper of the Heart, though I haven't seen that yet)....He's just a really awesome character (and voiced by another favorite actor of mine in the dub,Cary Elwes, from The Princess Bride)...

I highly recommend Whisper of the Heart. Baron isn't the main character, but the parts he's in are so sweet, and the main characters are really likeable too. I love that movie!:anime:
