View Full Version : About the "500 posts" thread

Why was the thread closed by Colin? Sure these boards don't allow insults but they DO permit criticism right? Cause I know "what the Toonzone forums are about", believe me, I've seen enough flame wars and rants going awry to be able to assess when a discussion goes wrong. And this was really not the case. "Sorry, no congratulations on my behalf"with a smiley added does not sound insulting to me. And the other contributors to the thread made very good points and never resorted to insults.
I rarely complain about the mods (because most of them are great!) but this was just too big... what I'm saying is: maybe it was bound to flare up, maybe you [Colin] were right, but in the future, just post a warning or something before closing the thread.

I think that Narhat's feelings were hurt in that thread, and I can't speak for Colin, but that is probably why he shut it down. I know nobody was trying to hurt his feelings, and perhaps some of it was brought on by putting up the poll, but it was all in good fun, but after so many people going So what, we don't care, it must have made him feel a little hurt. The kid has enthusiasm for the boards, what's wrong with that? I personally hadn't had problems with his posts. But yeah, I can see where the "hey, lookit my number posts!" gets old after a bit.
Just a suggestion, if you want to let others know you are happy about reaching a personal goal in your post number, just add at the end of a post in a thread about something else entirely. And only do it a couple times or so, not ever 500 or 1000 posts. If people feel the need to congratulate you, then they will, if not, well, that's ok too.

You're absolutely right calhoun, I can see why narhat would be upset... and I sure hope he and his enthusiasm will come back soon.
I was only put out by the way Colin reacted.

eh, I tried to delete the whole thread..didn't work
Anyway, I'm leaving, as it's obvious that my style, and the style of the rest of you don't mesh.
My feelings weren't hurt per se...I was disapointed that despite my attempts, I hadn't made any frieds, and in fact pissed off a number of people, for which I am sorry.
Thanx Colin, for closing the thread..I had posted it as my way of showing how much I had embraced the toonzone group, and have a little fun...instead I found out how everyone feels...
I'll probably still browse...but don't expect me to be commenting.

I didn't see anyone attacking you in there. All I saw was a couple "who cares" type things, some jokes, etc.
When your post says: "Oh boy, here comes the or nots", you're asking for it. That's like leaving a pie on a windowsill and expecting it not to get eaten. I don't think anything anyone said was that bad, and really I don't see the big deal. Stay around. Give this place one more chance.

Well, he put up the poll that left the option of the "or what." So I don't think that was what was bothering him. It was basically all these people who were trying to tell him that his posts amounted to 500 posts of nothing. Personally, I didn't see that, but whatever. That's my 2¢. If it's really not that big of a deal, he'll get over it and be back to posting.

I agree with what everybody said here.
Thing is, there has been alot of these type of posts lately, and I think everybody got a tiny bit tired of seeing them. Nothing major, but if these threads were posted on the "Is this Thing On board" (where I don't think people would mind as much)...but, that's just my thoughts...
oh yeah..on a side note..

Heck no. It's not like they remember everyone of his posts. I mean...everyone has some great ones, some dumb ones...I know I do...
I'm not sure HOW people feel about me. I'd like to think that they don't think I'm a complete moron...but honestly...doesn't matter to me. It's a place to talk about comics and TV for me...if I get a rappor with someone...that's cool and all, but...
I guess what I'm saying is don't let it get to you. I know for a fact that you had some good posts man, because I remember your name without seeing it. And to be fair...even DG's posts aren't always wonderful. I mean...DG knows a TON about what he's talking about. But even he would admit that some of his posts consist of:

Is This Thing On is for testing purposes only, so I don't think it would be appropriate to ask people to post these threads there. I just urge everbody to use moderation in letting us know you've reached a personal goal in your post number. Heck, it's all great to be proud of your progress, no shame in that, but the more threads we see started about it, the less effective it will be when yours comes around. I've seen plenty of posters add it at the end of a thread.
Woo hoo! I am up to 5700 posts! That is kinda cool, I think!
See? And it didn't take a new thread to do that! :)

If people like posting a lot and reach a big number of posts in a small amount of time, then good for them. People can congratulate them, or critisize them, everyone is entitled to an opinion. And if you post about you're having so many number of posts, you have to allow the fact that some people wont enjoy seeing that. But you shouldn't just become a shadow naraht, everyone like talking with you. You need to be able to take some people not liking certain things and just not care about it,k? It'd be a shame to lose suh a valuable poster.

ok...I just want to say, it wasn't JUST this thread that propted me in this decision..
I've been having some trouble with the way these forums are moderated, and I've had a mod or two chastise me about making "useless" posts.
I know me. I know that if I continue to stick around, that eventually I'll get pissed off & chew out the wrong person & get myself banned. I don't want that to happen, so I'm leaving of my own accord, hopefully with some grace.
My style, and the styles of the other people here don't seem to be meshing as well as I had hoped. Don't feel bad..it wasn't any one single person...
Stuff like this happens..lets let it go & get on with our lives.

All right, everybody... simmer down.
Quite frankly, this is getting blown waaaay out of proportion. Naraht wanted to brag about his post total, which is just fine by me. Initially, I glossed right on by his thread without a second thought. Later, I noticed that it had been locked and decided to see what was going on.
"Oh, boy. This ain't good," was my first thought. After I saw the explanation why the thread was closed, I knew it really wasn't over. Sho nuff, we now have a thread about the thread.
Naraht, if you're still lurking about, I want to say something to you. I'm still a relative newcomer to these boards. Heck, just look at my post total and you can tell that. Right now, tempers are flaring up all over, and nothing good will come of that. If you want to cool your heels for a while, please do so. While I can't speak for the others, I consider you to be a poster that I look for while I'm on the boards. To quote Jim Rome, usually you have "takes that do not suck." So if you're serious about leaving TZ, I for one will miss the opportunity to discuss all things toon or even nothing in particular with you.
Naraht, what I'm trying to say is, don't be a stranger. I would like to see you stay a part of the community.
Even if I only have 100 posts... ;)

sorry, naraht. you did make at least one friend here, and you pissed off a lot less people than you think. c'mon, stick around. the point of meeting at a forum is to discuss different views. look at the thread I started ("Concerning the locations..."). I was one of the two people to vote "cool'. And i think the only reason i think people went off on you was because you were boasting you're ability to post a lot in a short amount of time. So, it makes the impression that a lot of your posts were, well, useless.
I don't necessarily condone that type of posting, but i don't encourage it either. That's why i just voted "cool" and didn't post a reply. And that's just because i didn't know if you had posted a lot of good stuff, or a lot of bad stuff, so i didn't want to make a jugdment. But i still wanted to give you a pat on the back for reaching one of your goals.
Let's also not forget that a lot of the replies did sound pretty mean. I've just learned not to make such a big deal out of my own post numbers. Every hundred i leave a little note saying what i'm up to. It's not really for others to see, just to exclaim to myself that i'm happy.
So, if you're going to leave, then you probably should. But if you stay, then i'll go on patting your back. I was proud of you for getting 500 posts, and i'll be proud of whatever decision you feel you need to make. Just make sure that you can be proud of it. Regarding post counts, or anything else, that's what's really important.

First, let's cut out all the fingerpointing. We can all agree that things turned out badly. But it doesn't do any good to start casting blame around, because then you just get more and more people upset. When that thread got closed only one or two people were feeling bruised. If this keeps up there's going to be a lot more hurt feelings.
Second, these boards work because we are respectful and courteous to each other. Being respectful means not bashing people who anger, annoy or irritate you. But being courteous means not angering, annoying and irritating other people in the first place. We like to see people turning the other cheek when they get smacked. But we like it better when no one gets smacked, even unintentionally.
It's these "post count" threads and posts that are at the root of the problem. Some people, especially newbies, like to see those numbers and get a real sense of accomplishment when the number goes up. It reinforces the feeling that you're actually part of the board and making a difference. But to constantly call attention to that fact can be grating. It's like jumping up and down and shouting "Look at me, guys! I'm participating!" And if it goes on long enough, the temptation to snap back becomes too strong.
Bottom-line: It's a breach of netiquette to put these messages up. And like any breach of good manners, when it happens too often those who have to witness it will strike back.
Before this little incident occured, the mods had been on the verge of dropping the post counts completely, but decided to hold off. This may just force our hand. The only alternative is to ban or otherwise stomp on these "I've got x posts!" messages. That's pretty severe, and we don't want to do that, either.
The best solution is to let you guys, the posters, police yourselves: Don't put up these "post count" messages, and gently, oh so gently tell newbies who do that it's a breach of netiquette around here.

What may have put people off was the 1.5 months part. But congrats on your 500. :) Actually I didnt vote in the poll and didnt really see the thread after the 1st time until this thread came up. In general, I thought people were commenting light-heartedly, since naraht's original post was kinda light-heartedly self mocking. But I can see where it might have been mean at some poitns.
Hey naraht I hope you dont leave, even if you dont think some of us mesh with you. We could definitely use your enthusisasm around. Eventually, what will happen will happen, but I hope it doesnt sour your stay.
In general, I dont really have a problem with self-conggratulatory posts, but like Cal has said, these should be rare and not a bad idea to put it just as a one-liner to end a post. I think people's discontent with the "x posts in x days" posts is that it makes it seem like a competition. There's no such thing as a competition regarding the number of opinions you express, keep that in mind folks!

So Maxie, what are the possible courses of action you mods are considering regarding the issue of post counts?
1. Do away with?
2. Keep as is?
3. Something else?
Maxie Zeus
01-05-2002, 08:37 PM
No one wants you to go. I can't be more plain or blunt than that.
No one wants you to go. My voice is only one in the chorus.
No one wants you to go. I've said it three times, and what I tell you three times is true.
Do you not "mesh" well with others? Everyone here fails to mesh with at least one other person. Heck, though you'd never suspect it, there are plenty of people around here that are (or have been) at daggers drawn with each other. (And to the peanut gallery: No speculation on who I'm talking about.)
But it's not the point to "mesh" well with others. Just play well with them, so that they'll play well with you. Sometimes the sparks fly. We mods try to put out the bad fires, but often they make light and warmth, so that we all see and feel better about each other.
You might not feel it a personal defeat when you leave, but it would be a defeat to these boards. You've done nothing to deserve either exile or ostracisim.
Don't be rash.

salvor is one of our oldest and most highly respected members. He's a veteran. He knows how things work around here. And he's a lovely human being.
That's why it is so distasteful to have issue this reminder in this context:
If you have a problem with a mod's decision, take it up privately with the mods. Don't make public criticisms.
By the time I found this thread it had already mutated into a "stick around, naraht" thread. Otherwise I would have instantly deleted it.

Naraht (other people on the board can hear this too:
Sometimes things get a little too strenuous (whatever that means) while posting on the board. It becomes a chore, and sometimes gets to the point where Subject A (the poster) is dodging other things just to get a post on.
So taking a rest from posting is a good thing. If that wasn't your reason, then still listen, because these words are important.
However, we really would not like to lose you permanently. Who would I spend my Chanukas with? (face it, folks; it is impossible for me to go a whole post without putting something humorous in it. In fact, I am very ashamed that I did that.)

I dont mind it, it looks cool. It's just that when I first look at it, it looks like Mario climbing the beanstalk. Normal. Then when I keep looking at it, it morphs into Mario gettin' down, wiggling his hips. Maybe I just have a dirty mind. :)

I personally think it's a camera trick. He's not climbing anything, but walking across the floor with a camera held at an angle to give the illusion he's climbing. Just like an old Batman show.

C'mon, guys, Mario always climbs up the vine! Then he goes and plays in the clouds, collects all of the coins, and falls gently to Earth.
It is kinda sad to see him always climbing up and trying to reach that goal but never getting any closer. He's like a modern day Sisyphus.

I don't really think that's needed.... this place covers it nicely. We ARE allowed to post polls on favorite soft drinks or fast food chains... in fact, it has been done before.
I think, though, I understand what you mean by not "meshing". When I first came here, the boards seemed really formal, compared to what I was used to before, which was a much more casual board. The mods seemed to really enforce the rules. But either I've grown used to it, or I've accepted it as a good thing. Because although it may not be as casual as you'd like, the majority of the posts are intelligent and thoughtful responses.
A forum is not a chatroom. It is somewhat expected that in all of one's x number of posts, some of them have to be more than one line and show a certain IQ level. :p
Having said that, there IS a place for you. You are not as annoying as you think, and many of your posts have been quite enlightening. :p (Not said sarcastically, it's just that "enlightening" seems really lofty). I can understand if you need to take a sabbatical, but please believe me and other posters who say this: you are welcome to return, and please do.
This is a really friendly place, and people talk about their personal lives and interests all the time. For example, Lodoss War Fan (I hope I got his name right) asked us for advice on a girl. We've had threads like "How many people here are married?" which lead to a wonderful discussion on current relationships (or lack thereof). There have been discussions on school life, and about philisophies of life in general. Perhaps "Hey. It's Monday, and my socks don't match" is a little too casual, but really, I've found that all you have to do is name a topic, stick to it, and people will be willing to discuss it.
I think when you say you've had run-ins with the mods about content, you are referring to a thread that you started that got closed because it was too similar to "The Never-Ending Post", which you must have missed. The problem with threads like that is mainly only because they get too long, they accumulate posts REALLY quickly, and it becomes hard for moderators to catch up to it. A thread without a topic to discuss seems to me little more than, once again, a chatroom, and a reason to beef up post counts (Which was another rising problem, but it seems to be under control).
Of course, I'm making a lot of assumptions here, and I may be waaaaaaaay off about you, and feel free to shoot me down! What the hell do I know anyway. I'm just saying that there is really no need for an "General Animation Board" AND a "General General Board".
