View Full Version : MAU ????? is what Marvel should be thinking about

What made the DC cartoons classic (well to me anyway) was that the the DCAU has its own universe. The cartoons related too each other, built upon each other, creating a sense of history. Which paid off in episodes down the line.
Unlike Marvel, who's cartoons are in their own little different worlds.
So if Marvel wants their cartoons to be memorable, instead of just one offs...they better shape up, and figure out a continuity.
Hope they do

What the Hell are you talking about? All the Marvel cartoons made by FOX Kids from the 90's except Avengers: United are in the same universe like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-Men TAS and Spider-Man TAS.

Eh... that's debatable. There are quite a few little continuity nit picks that one can make to the contrary (the Daredevil that guest starred in Fantastic Four is nothing like he is in Spider-Man, for example).
The way I see it, X-Men and Spider-Man are in a seperate continuity to Fantastic Four, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. But like I said, that's debatable. There's plenty of evidence to suggest either way (much like Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited).

Thanks S.C.B i'll try to keep that in mind.

They were?
never seemed like it...but I was a kid then.
Is this like official information, or is this just fans trying to connect them together. (like some do with Teen Titans too DCAU....which it isn't)
I mean, does Marvel say they are in the same universe. (I'm not defying you or anything) I'm really now just pretty curious.
Thanks

The X-Men from X-Men: TAS (complete with the same voice actors) all appeared in two episodes of Spider-Man: The Animated Series, as did Iron Man (with his show's voice actor, Robert Hays). Iron Man (again played by Hays) also appeared in an episode of UPN's The Incredible Hulk, which directly referenced his Marvel Action Hour series.
The Fantastic Four (two of whom spoke on screen played by their own show's voice actors) also appeared on an episode of The Incredible Hulk. Lastly, Spider-Man Unlimited directly referenced events from Spider-Man: The Animated Series (specifically details of the black symbiote's arrival on Earth).
So in a roundabout way, all of these shows can be claimed to share the same universe:
X-Men: The Animated Series
Marvel Action Hour: The Fantastic Four
Marvel Action Hour: Iron Man
Spider-Man: The Animated Series
The Incredible Hulk
Spider-Man Unlimited
Naturally since most of these series came from different production teams, there are many inconsistencies between them. The idea of each show being part of the same universe was seemingly only decided upon when a particular guest star was required. There was no grand plan from day one.
Just to note; while there are variable degrees of inconsistencies between all the above shows, Silver Surfer and The Avengers are more-or-less totally incompatible with the characters and events shown in each series.

I still want to see a Marvel Universe anthology series on Cartoon Network.. including characters rarely or never seen animated:
moon knight
cloak & dagger
daredevil
elektra
black widow (solo)
black panther (solo)
captain america
Spider-Man

You have to realize that the DC comic series had basically the same creative team (except for a few changes) thoughout the entire run. That made it easier to make everything go together and even retro-actively fit in parts to make all these cartoons one big saga. The Marvel cartoons didn't have that. They had similar writers and directors but not the same creative team or designers for the most part. I think that some of the 1990s series exist in the same universe but they also thrive on their own pretty well.

I sort of always thought Spider-Man and X-Men: TAS WERE in similar universes. However, Marvel's always been too...all over the place to ever truly managed a shared AU. Technically, they COULD with an Iron Man cartoon, an FF cartoon, and an X-Men cartoon all coming out, but I doubt they will...

Those upcoming shows are made by different companies so i don't think they would be in the same Universe.

Is it necessarily a bad thing that these cartoons might not exist in the same universe?

No but I'm just asking anyone who reads the thread if seperate universes for each of these cartoons is really a bad thing. While it'd be nice to have a connected universe like the DC shows I can't see it being done right if these shows are all done by different creative teams. I think it might not be such a bad thing if all these shows had their own universe.

It would be great if the new shows were all in the same universe (or at the very least, the DTVs) so we can have a decent "Secret Wars" series instead of the god-awful one seen on Spider-Man TAS!

It was the quality of the writing and animation that made the DCAU successful not the fact they were set in the same universe.

The DCAU was made up of 'sequels to the preceding series' as well, whereas the Marvel cartoons were all pretty much 'parallel-quels'. That's a word I don't like to use.

yep
so would people rather one company take over the Marvel cartoons, so atleast the cartoons have some conistancy and quality too the shows.
If Marvel was gonna make a cartoon universe just like DC did.
how do you think they should start it off.
I think X-Men Evolution is a good starting point and style for a new Marvel animated universe....
Next up...maybe another Spiderman toon......then maybe Fantastic Four.....then a new Avengers toon.
I think those cartoons could pretty much cover most of the Marvel univerese, with guest apperances and stuff.
but it'll never happen...they already have all these cartoons being made...none of which are related too each other.

Hell, Spider-Man: The Animated Series had a Marvel Universe all of its own. So many character appeared, from Blade to Dr Strange, you could make a MAU out of that if you wanted to. There were even references to unseen heroes, like Hulk, the Defenders and the Avengers.

That's what I mean. People seem to think that if all the cartoons were connected they'd be better. It would be neat yes but it wouldn't really improve anything which is why I don't see the need to see every Marvel cartoon connected to another one. It would be good for maybe little in-jokes and references but not really necessary by any means.

No not neccesary to have all the shows in the same universe. As was stated the DCAU was successful to due strong writing and great animation. The shared universe just made it seem a little more special I guess, more timeless, and I think that's what people want to see or feel. I would love a MAU but I know thats most likely not going to happen, what happened with the DCAU was a huge stroke of luck imo.
