View Full Version : Mother 3! (Spoilers)

The official site has finally gotten the theme music, and some screenshots of the game. Fortunately, for us English-speaking folk, Starmen.net had translated the site, which is right here:
http://starmen.net/mother3/mother3world/
In this thread, we can discuss what we think of the screenshots, and put our theories. I put spoilers in the title for a reason, so try using spoiler boxes.
...now we just need a North America release. :p

Do I wait for the US release, or do I dare purchase this as soon as it reaches Japanese retailers? O_O
Such a hard decision -_-

As much as I want the game, wandering around in Japanese won't quench my Mother 3 desire. I need to know the zany dialogue and crazy world.

Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,
At this time, no plans to release Earthbound I + II or III in the U.S. and Canada
have been announced. You never know what the future might hold, though, so keep
checking our website's news section (www.nintendo.com/newsmain (http://www.nintendo.com/newsmain)) for the latest
information and announcements!
Once a game has been officially announced, go to our Master Game List
(www.nintendo.com/gamelist) (http://www.nintendo.com/gamelist%29). Click on the "Show Advanced Filtering" link to
narrow your search based on release date, publisher, number of players, etc.
When you bring up your desired listing of games, click on the title of a game to
view all the information currently available for it. If the information you
seek is not yet available, please keep checking back. When there is new
information to share on games or other upcoming products, our website is the
best official source!
Please note that details on licensed software represent the most current
information available from our licensee companies. Also, any posted release
dates for both Nintendo and licensee titles are estimates and subject to change.
When it gets close to a product's estimated release date, you may want to check
with your local retailers to see when it may be available in your area.
If you would like additional information on a particular licensee title, you may
want to contact the company producing it. To find information on how to reach
one of our licensed publishers, head to the Corporate section of our website
(www.nintendo.com/corp/index.jsp) (http://www.nintendo.com/corp/index.jsp%29), and then click on "Company Connections."
Here you'll find a list of all our current licensee companies.
In the meantime, I will forward your feedback to the proper departments here, so
they get a chance to hear what our fans think.
Thank you for your e-mail.

Are Nintendo TRYING to lose another Console War?

They may just not be ready to announce it yet. If it is coming it then I would assume there will be something about it at E3. Due to translation time and such, it isn't like it would be out before then anyway.
-------
As for trying to lose the console war, I don't think Earthbound is really going to affect things. The game definitely has its fans, but it isn't that popular.

Why's everyone being so negative? Just because there are no dates yet, does that mean it's not coming? No! I had a similar generic response from Warner Brothers once...
I'm gonna hold out and hope that it comes. Which it probably will.... Except maybe not Europe... Because they suck that way.

I don't think anything has been confirmed either way. Personally, I think it is less likely to stay in Japan-only than in the past. Unlike the before time, there aren't many actual games made by Nintendo themselves that stay Japan-only these days.

EarthBound 1+2 was the only Nintendo release in 2003 that was not translated for anyone else. :(

EarthBound 1+2 was the only Nintendo release in 2003 that was not translated for anyone else. :(Precisely. Earthbound has a pretty loyal fanbase here in America but nowhere big enough for Nintendo to keep moving product. It's the same situation as Parodius and Puyo Puyo.

Also, the advertising for EB was less than stellar. The commercials were terrible and showed bad footage, and the slogan for it was "This game stinks!"

Yep. If I remember correctly the print ads featured scratch 'n sniff things.

I think I still have some of those scratch and sniffs...
Ya know, this could be NOA Sleeper Hit of Summer. With Zelda delayed, they could just sneak out an RPG to tide people over until the Twilight Revolution...

Yep. If I remember correctly the print ads featured scratch 'n sniff things. It must have been purely magazine based since I can easily remember ads for Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore but not Earthbound.

Assuming they put out anything. With their previous release habits, I wouldn't count on anything being released anytime soon.
One game every six months is way too little no matter how you slice it, and NOA needs to get off their duff and put out some product so people who own their freaking systems will actually have SOMETHING TO PLAY.
William C. Maune
02-20-2006, 02:20 PM
One release every six months is an exaggeration. There have been multiple titles in the past six months including Fire Emblem, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon: Gale of Darkness, Mario Baseball, Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, Mario Party 7, etc. Plus, while there may not be as many as for the PS2 and XBox/360, there are still third party releases that GameCube owners can play as well.

Oh wow! A Mother-themed Micro and a Franklin Badge?! Those Japanese people always get the best video game memorabilia!
Those screenshots don't have the isometric view that the first two Mothers had. It's still giving me that funny vibe that Earthbound gave me but I just find that unusual.

I know all of jack about this game, but..... why are people so excited about this game? Screenshots look completely and utterly unremarkable and I've heard really nothing about it, other than it was called, Earthbound here in the States.
Why do people care so much about this... Mother 3? O_o

If you don't know about Earthbound, it's an RPG parody. (although it does have a nice battle system) You're an average kid with psychic powers, and you get thrown in the middle of a really dumb plot. The enemies are things like hippies, judo cops, and cult members. The healing items are things like Hamburgers. (and there's an interesting system behind the healing items, too) The game is full of wierd dialog, convulted plot devices, and a fat guy, yet it still manages to be a letgitamate (and fun) RPG.

As well as old ladies, businessmen under the influence of saké and of course, killer taxi's of doom! And what else do you get to fight? Garbage cans, local bullies dressed as pimps, and that wierd cult which wants to paint the world blue! Good stuff, good stuff. Was kinda disappointed that you had to become robots for the last boss though :(. Sort of seemed like an anti-climax.
Earthbound rocked out loud! Such a fantastic RPG. Great gameplay, plot and great humour in there. Wouldn't recommend it to "graphics whores" though.

The same could be said for any 16-bit era RPG. Earthbound was no different. :p

Not true
You can appreciate the spritely fashion of many of the enviroments, monsters, and bosses
Some still look very awsome, others were just mere repaints
But 16 bit RPGs used mor epalletes than 8-bit RPGs, the 8-Bit RPGs give me nightmares of a world with repeating pallettes of few colors and muffled MIDI noises
and even if you defeated the last evil boss, the world still froze(being that 20 hour marathons usualy killed the old consoles)
Invader_Spooch

He was saying "graphics whores" as in those who only appreciate games with a "realistic aesthetic" (ie "those whipper snappers who only like flashy current and next gen games"). At least I would assume that's what he meant (didn't really go into detail in his post as to what he was implying).
Tak Mazé
02-22-2006, 05:14 PM
Yah that's what I meant. Sorry for confusing people. Sort of directed towards some people I know who gasped at the first screenshots of the new FF game and instantly assumed that it would be the best one yet without knowing anymore than how it's going to look.
Sure you can appreciate the simple, cheap n' cheerful look of Earthbound, but it's no Chrono Trigger when it comes to visuals. But that didn't make it any less spectacular than Chrono was :).

The Mother series is awesome for a variety of befuddling reasons to the uninitiated. It's one of the few RPGs set in a modern time period with cars, apartment buildings, etc. Its graphics are deliberately crude but let you indulge your 4 year old self that insists the world should be blocky and pastel coloured. But your adult self can appreciate the weird humour and enjoy the sheer joy of fighing hippes, angry bag ladies and out of control business men.

I really, really apologize for bumping this, but I didn't want to make another Topic.
So anyway, the game has been released, and I spoiled myself to death, only to find out that someone asked Reggie at Nintendo World if they were going to release it, then he said, "Wait 10 Days."

Yeah, lets be hopefull for an E3 announcement.
I've been playing through, but its tough with my limited knowledge of Japanese. I'm still in Chapter 1.
I've got to say though, the scene where Flint finds out about his wife's death is very emotional, it hits all the right notes in execution and musical cues.

If you haven't beaten the game yet, then you might want to avoid the forums on Starmen.net. I'm actually at the first boss of the game myself.
I swear these Pig Army guys are something else. (That's right, the Pig Army from the canned 64 is still large and in charge as villains go in this.) If any of you have been visiting the Japanese site or Starmen.net's Translation of it, you might know that a lot of the enemies are mostly chimeras of animals spliced together. I think it's obvious these guys are responsible for those since they're making them into cyborgs as well. And they're doing a good job of it too. This Reconstructed Caribou thing is kicking my ass.

I played the game for a few minutes to sample it before it was on shelves to see for one if it lived up to my high expectations, and two to see if it would be playable in Japanese.
I decided in the end though, that I'd wait for the US release, should that ever happen. If not, I'll continue playing the ROM on my DS with a fan-translation patch that's already in the works.
One way or another, I WILL play this game ;).
