View Full Version : A New Animation I Made: Political Disagreements (PG-13)

SJJ gave me clearance to show this video. It doesn't really have anything "dirty" in it, but there are fleeting references to abortion and rape. But it's all done for the sake of lampooning politics, so if you take it in that context it's fine. Enough talk, here's the link: [link removed]

I tried a few new techniques in this bit of animation, such as chins moving when people talked (i.e. more realistic) and subtle eye movements here and there. Plus I tried to inbetween a little bit at the part where Hardyman says, "I...... disagree." (Though technically it's the same frame, just rotated many times) And I'm pretty proud of the animation when Larry sucks in air to begin his rant.

I'm a little bit disappointed in the big rant section, however; I was convinced that there was a special effect in iMovie 3 that would allow you to zoom in on someone; it was called the Ken Burns effect. Sadly, that only works for still photos. So I had to include something else for that part not to be so plain, and I think the Empire Strikes Back theme fit nicely with the tone. ;)

Its rather amusing an interesting, I must say. Maybe you should try doing it the old fashioned way... drawing each frame with slight modifications. Perhaps youll get more of the affect you wanted. :)

Hi there.
Your using Flash or pencil/paper right? I think you could probably benefit from this program here that I use:

http://www.lostmarble.com/moho

It's EXTREMELY easy to learn if you just follow the tutorials. It's what I use for all my animation.
It's cheaper than Flash or Toonboom, I bought it for $99.

You can look at the stuff I'm doing now by going here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~jtn1989/hiyaanimation/id77.html

They have a free UNLIMITED (it just has a barely noticeable watermark on Quicktimes) demo that you can practice with or even make whole toons.

Good luck!

Yay! People are responding! :)
Maybe you should try doing it the old fashioned way... drawing each frame with slight modifications. Perhaps youll get more of the affect you wanted. Oh man, that would take a long time. I could churn it out a lot quicker if I were drawing these frames by hand (and I'd be more willing to have a lot more body movement, for that matter), but I'm drawing this on the computer by dragging a mouse. I can only go so long before my wrist gets tired. ;)

Not only that, but I'm not very skilled at matching the time code to animation. So it's much easier to create generic frames in case I need to reuse them later on in the time code (and I usually do), instead of trying to make unique frames every time and having to mentally keep track of where in the time code I am for a given frame. Hope that makes sense. ;)

Hi there.
Your using Flash or pencil/paper right? Believe it or not, I've never used Flash. I WANT to, but it's out of my price range for the full version at the moment. These animations are made with a simple drawing program, combined in iMovie 3. Music, SFX, and voices are doing in iMovie 3 as well.

Thanks for the Moho link, though- I'll look into that.

I personally hate Flash as a program. Too hard to learn and it has a lot of problems animation wise.

I use iMovie for editing my animations also. Yay! A Mac user!!

Anyway, if you start using Moho follow the tutorials and you'll do fine. It only took me about an hour and a half to master the basics.
If you need extra help PM me or post in the Moho forum:

*Dies laughing* LOLIRL! Dude, I love your stuff, I can't get enough of it! When that one dude started to nail the republicans I actually was like: I've heard this before. LOLIRL.

I love the look Larry gives when the guy's like: You dare disagree with Larry? No one disagree's with Larry!

Larry: Republicans are war happy, abortion hating retards ... You're wrong, I'm right, deal with it. Oh, that's right ... you CAN'T!

Hardyman: Yeah sure, your tact today is ... oh, who am I kidding, you don't have any tact.

Leon: I give that retort a two out of ten.

Hardyman: Shut up!

*Dies* Oh gosh, dude, make more, make moooore! I adore your voice, it's so perfect for this. :anime: :) :D It's so true, people sooo act like that all the time. Try debating against a whole class, with only one person on your side, and that's the feeling you get.

Thanks again for the kind words, Casity!
When that one dude started to nail the republicans I actually was like: I've heard this before. LOLIRL. Yeah, all from a simple "I disagree". Funny but true, in many real life political discussions. But that's Larry's character to a T: Sarcastic, loud, and rude. Leon (the big-nosed guy) is the exact opposite: An unconfident, single loner with low self-esteem. Hardyman basically acts like me, somewhere in the middle. ;)
I adore your voice, it's so perfect for this. Thanks. I've been told I have a voice for radio; I personally don't hear it, but maybe I do. ;)

And BTW, in case you were wondering, yes, the Larry rant scene had deliberately looped mouth movements. I was lazy and wanted to get the video done. Believe it or not, filling 30 seconds of mouth movements to fit speech is extremely time consuming and exhausting.

The whole thing was neat, but the very end made me lol.

MORE PLEASE! I'm watching these again and again, you need to make more! Patience, grasshopper. ;)
The whole thing was neat, but the very end made me lol. Heh, thanks. It's always interesting to witness reaction to my work; during the process of making it, I don't find it funny at all, because I'm working on it so much that all the dialog loses all meaning. That, and I'm always self-conscious of all the animation shortcuts I end up taking (my Eva video was notorious for this). But when I showed some of these to my classmates out in L.A. they got a kick out of them and it was a big hit.

You really never know until you show it to somebody else, because the artist themselves is going to be their own harshest critic.

I think for my next video I'm going to try hand-drawn stuff on paper. Then I can scan each frame into the computer and link them together later. But drawing on paper is SOOOOOO much easier than the computer.

LOLIRL! That's the first time I've been called that. :anime: But in all honesty, I think more is required.
