View Full Version : What do you think should be made of the "graveyard hour" (5-6AM)?

WS's recent announcement that it'll be airing "The Gary Coleman Show" and "The Super Globetrotters" (2 old Hanna-Barbera shows that IMO are near if not at the bottom of the barrel of the LARGE H-B family, though at the same time are kinda guilty pleasures, specifically the former) has left me feeling a complex mix of emotions: "WTF??!", "LMAO! Nice sense of humor!", "They're not taking the graveyard hour seriously", "WTF??!", "Why these 2 oddities?", "This might be the start of something interesting/bad": all mixed into one. They will be replacing "Big O" (which has been re-ran into the ground already) and "Gigantor" (a decent classic whose airing on AS and CN period baffles me. When did they get the broadcast rights to it, and did they run through the whole series?)
What I'm trying to get at is, and on a serious note is whether anything productive can be made out of that precious chunk of programming real estate known as the "graveyard hour": perhaps the last remaining bastion of what used to be late-nights on Cartoon Network. Before [adult swim]. Before "Toonami Midnight Run". Before the required E/I programming. I'm talking about "Late Night Black & White" and "O' Canada" here!!! Considering that it was taken under AS's wing to make it a separate channel on paper.
IMO I think they should target that hour at the following groups and purposes:
- Those with VCR's/DVR's/DVDR's first and foremost. Seems logical.
- Those who miss the CN of yore/lack the "Boomerang" channel/old-timers (no offense): I think they already have/are targeting this group, but just in case.
- Re-run Witch Hunter Robin & Wolf's Rain: Oops, WHR's broadcast rights ran out mere days ago! Too late for these two under-ran series.
Mind you I'm not trying to make a big deal about this little slice of programming hour, but it's like an oasis in the middle of a desert. It has some potential. This is just my two cents on it, as ultimately it's up to WS no? Consider this thread void though if they do supposedly expand to 10PM outside of Sundays. Dunno where I heard that from...........
Come Saturday, the echoes of "GI-GAN-TOR!" and "BIG-O BIG-O BIG-O!" will be replaced by "LEBEAU!" and this:

I think showing Super Globtrotters and The Gary Coleman is sort of a counter-programming measure to the Boondocks. Like saying to Al Sharpton and his kin "Okay you think that's too offensive? Here's some good natured shows starring black people. Enjoy!"
If Adult Swim Fix lives up to it's potential then there won't be much of a need for the graveyard slot showing all the old shows since the Fix will do that already. If I were in charge though I'd rotate it between a mix of classic cartoons (Like Late Night Black and White, The Popeye show, as well as just some good old Merry Melodey toons not shown in years) and Space Ghost/Cartoon Planet. I remember back when they use to air those back to back? Why not do it again? Then they could show the original SG's since they wouldn't have to worry about it running overlong since they could just cut out a CP segment or something.

I always wanted it to be the Zorak Worship Hour. It would consist of The Brak Show, Space Ghost, and Cartoon Planet. I was thinking the bumps could be like the Sealab Vol.3 cover but with Zorak. Communist inspired.

If Megas XLR isn't going to get played by CN anymore and a DVD isn't going to be released, how about putting that in the slot. I like Ace's ideas on focusing on the Boomerang classics and the shows for people who want to get some recordings done. Just borrow a lot of CN and Boomerang material, some Toonami and Adult Swim would be great too. Heck, since they don't care about ratings at that hour, why not just make that graveyard shift hour called "Adult Swim's Record Zone" or something creative? :)

I couldn't care less what they do with one-half of that hour. Just give me back Cartoon Planet.

I'm thinking they could air Megas XLR Unedited and Probally Minoriteam.

I'm thinking they could air Megas XLR UneditedMegas XLR already IS uncut.
Anyway, when Super Globetrotters and The Gary Coleman Show are finished with their run, I think 5-6 should be used for at least one of these:
Wait 'Till Your Father Gets Home
O' Canada
The Bob Clampett Show
Toonheads
Popeye
Cartoon Planet
Super Milk Chan(I actually enjoyed this)
Battle of the Planets
animated music videos
Superfriends
Big O
Gigantor

The broadcast rights to "Battle of the Planets" are currently owned by ADV's "Anime Network" who runs the series on a daily strip in their awfully-obscure linear channel. "G-Force" would be the most likely choice for that block, but its broadcast rights are also owned by TAN and both series are owned by Sandy Frank. Turner no longer has a stake in "G-Force" that allowed them to air it at their leisure on Cartoon Network between 1995-2000.
Well, the new "graveyard hour" starts tonight. Sad thing is that I may actually stay up for it.

Why doesn't [as] just extend itself by half an hour? Then the reruns could take up the "grave yard hour".

Obviously it should be for the shows that they don't air on the regular schedule anymore. And by that I mean AS shows they've already licenced and not failed HB shows. Better yet, just air subtitled anime like City Hunter. Nobody is going to cry over subtitles at 5 in the morning.

I love the fact that there's a TV-G show on [adult swim]. I really do.
These shows should get AT LEAST a TV-PG rating for MASSIVE SUCKAGE!

I hope they continue to use it for old quality shows from AS's history. I can easily see PA and Champloo being stripped there for a run or two. Maybe some more old theatricals. I'd guess Mission Hill, Home Movies, Oblongs, or any of the other network rejects could work. Maybe even B:TAS.

The "graveyard hour" on [adult swim] should include Captain Planet at 5 a.m. and Wolf's Rain at 5:30 a.m. Why? Teach people at an odd hour in the morning about the dnagers you could do to the enviroment and see the end result if ignore Captain Planet's warning, you live in domes waiting until the Earth becomes a wasteland. Surely Ted will wake up for this.:p

Well then, now that the novelty of the return of these two shows (and the genuine physical pain that watching "Super Globetrotters" gave me) has worn off I guess we're all going back to our "ignoring the graveyard hour completely" selves huh?

I think [adult swim] Saturdays should start at 12am, have the original run 12-2am, have a movie at 2am, then the line up repeat from 4-6am.
Or have 12-2am, repeat 2-4am, and 2 hours of old school anime from 4-6am.

You know, before Cartoon Network stopped making sense, there used to be an hour block called "It Came From The Vault," which showcased obscure, cult, and outright weird cartoons the network had in their vaults. Shows that will likely never be seen on television again, like The Trollkins, The Biskitts, Turbo Teen, Goober and the Ghost Chasers, The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, Drac Pack, The Kwicky Koala Show, and other Morts in the Turner animation library. Since they're in the need to air obscure older animation titles, perhaps they could have a rotating schedule in that Vault formar.
Either that, or sneak in The Popeye Show with The Tex Avery Show inbetween the first [as] airing and the encore.
Either way, I'll be sleeping.

Was I the only one who absolutely loved The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley? (Long name though it has.)
Anyways....what should be done with this hour? Shorten AS by an hour and bring back the Boomerang block. It'd be a HELL of a lot more effective than those stupid-arse commercials.

I'm sure I'm not the first to voice this opinion but I'd prefer to get an extra half hour of action cartoons at 2:30 and then 5:30 on the repeat. They could air something like Witch Hunter Robin, Blue Gender, Or whatever they have licensing for which might not be much at this point.

Nope, I thought it was fricken brilliant. Ed Grimley's the only character to be on both SCTV and SNL, and the series was way too smart for Saturday mornings. It only lasted one season, which is a shame.
That's probably why I liked the "It Came From The Vault" because networks wouldn't give these shows a second chance, good or bad.

This is very true. As I think about it, I remember "It Came From the Vault". I remember liking pretty much all of its shows. Even though I was pretty young, I always liked the weird shows.

The 5-6 slot would be the place to run the subbed versions of AS anime shown in dub earlier in the evening. "Adult Swim Subtitle Theatre." That way, sub fans could have it their way. (^_*)
EDIT: I saw from Kim Manning's answers on Ask [as] that they abandoned their plan for an experiment with showing subbed anime, so I guess the 5-6 sub theatre is an idea that'll never happen.

5:00 a.m. should be various retro action shows from the '80s and earlier.
5:30 a.m. should be all the Gundam shows presented in their entirety...

I loved that show when it reran on CN, though for some reason I thought that was Edy Murphy. I especially loved, the Count Floyd show. I think that show had the only devent potrayal of mime, though the only episiode I remember is the one where Ed looses his goldfish.

Have Gary Coleman and Super Globetrotters looped over already? They do have a handful of episodes after all.
And if you didn't know already, AS is planning to take over the 10PM hour all week long by late spring. Meaning the "graveyard hour" will be no more. Guess my question got answered though not in the way I expected. Goodbye to the last piece of old-school CN real estate............

I know it will never happen. But it would be nice if ADV let CN air the recently dubbed into English Gatchaman shows. And then air the new Tetsujin/Gigantor then.
Barring that maybe just air some of the older shows from "It came from the Vault" as has been suggested already.

Martin Short once did a training tape for McDonald's Corp. in character as Ed Grimley. Kind of an initiation video with Ed as a new McDonald's employee. It was made around the time of this show. Very funny stuff, I wish I had a copy of it.
As for the graveyard hour, I'd love to see them pull in some 80's action cartoons like Galaxy Rangers, Centurions, or Bravestarr. I'd also like to see Mutant League again, of course.

How about airing Toonheads and Late Night, Black and White? These shows aren't even on Boomerang anymore and they need a home. I think AS would be a good fit for it. I'm trying to remember when was the last time Late Night Black and White aired.

Since Adult Swim is getting the extra hour I thought of a couple good ways to use the hours. Instead of the graveyard hour, from 4 to 6 Retro Swim would air for the old shows adults watched back in the day that aren't aired now. Maybe some Thundercats and Toonheads, the quality shows that aren't aired. Here's two ways that would work.
10:00 - 1:00 First Run
1:00 - 4:00 Encore
4:00 - 6:00 Retro
or
10:00 - 1:00 Comedy
1:00 - 4:00 Action
4:00 - 6:00 Retro

Inuyasha in its current slot could last till October without reruns. EVA's got a least a month left I think.
