He's not an idiot, he just lived in a forest most of his life. He's pretty much a very simple and happy person, that doesn't mean he's brainless though. He's very smart when it comes to fighting since he finds it fun and he has been doing it most of his life.
He makes mistakes, just like everyone else. I really don't know where people get the idea that he's an idiot.

He showed his smart side in the Cell Game, when he fought him just to let Gohan know his moves, he knew he couldn't beat him.

Goku may lack some common sense, but the fact is that he doesn't need common sense to survive- all he wants is to be with his loving family, and that doesn't require common sense.
In the battlefield, he uses his genius because he has to. He's a very smart person, but only uses his brains when he has to. If he had his way, there would be no villains and he could just sit around, happy with ihs family, never once having to use his brains.
Everything Goku ever did was because he had to do it to protect his family. The Super Saiyan levels, the attacks, even sacraficing his life, all were to protect his loved ones. This shows what a selfless and generous person he is.

I never really think Goku is dumb, he seems like a carefree happy person. And as said in this thread, he has no reason to be otherwise.

In comparison to Gohan, Goku is pretty stupid. Think about it, the only reason he is smart in the battle field is because all he ever learned how to do was fight(and Roshi taught him how to read porn mags aswell, but we won't get into that ;) ) Goku barely knows how to count past 12(he didn't know his age in the 21Budoukai), and he thought marriage was a type of bread. You don't have to call Goku stupid, but he ain't the smartest man in the world.

Goku isn't stupid, he's just ignorant of things, that's all. In the Dragonball series, Goku encounters alot of things he doesn't know that's common sense to everyone else, basically because he lived in the wilderness when he was young and is experiencing everything for the first time.
As for Goku acting the way he does, that's his personality. He is very simple minded, treating everything as an adventure or with an ease of mind. Remember, he grew up in the wilderness with only his grandfather to teach him things. His grandfather taught him how to conduct himself, and without modern world influenes, he was free to act that way. Even when he was around influences, his code of conduct was branded in him and he was able to resist influences.
This is my opinion on Goku.
I think the term you guys are looking for is 'uneducated'. Goku is quite capable of learning (just look at 'Instantaneous Movement' and 'Fusion' for examples). He just never had an actual teacher aside from his grandfather (a woods hermit) and Master Roshi (the Turtle Hermit). Gohan, OTOH, has had books shoved under his nose practically since childbirth... if I were him, I'd be learning everything I could just to get a job and move away from that madwoman, Chi-Chi. :D

Goku never had a real teacher that taught him much other than martial arts, so yes, he's not very educated.
He knows how to fight, though, and that's what he does best.
And.... He DID learn how to drive.... :p
