Probably Fillmore because he reminds me so much of myself. I half expected everyone to sarcastically list all the "stereotypical" characters of yesteryear, but I see we only got a few of those.

Apparantly not. Makes you wonder what Termite Terrace was thinking about, don't it?
Well you could simply say it was racism, or you could take it from the idea that they designed him to look like a monkey because of the african aspect.
(Oh, And for a short period of time, I thought Bosko was in the same species as the Warner Bros.)
Hermes Conrad and his wife(I forget how her name is spelled) (Futurama)
Chef (and his parents) (South Park)
Token (South Park)

Originally, he was meant to be the usual "Sambo" stereotype of Black people in popular entertainment at the time (see: various old theatrical cartoons), but since ripping off Mickey Mouse was popular at the time among virtually every studio, he got drawn in a manner that made him look not completely like a mouse or the Sambo stereotype, but apparently indistinct. (Liked Plucky Duck's comments on Bosko and Honey: "What are they exactly, some kind of bugs?")

Who found Bosko's cartoons as bland as Buddy's, stereotyping or not...

Ugh. I don't care much for BH Month.
Uhm....
The cast of Boondocks (minus Uncle Ruckus...idiot that he is)
Cleveland from Family Guy
Storm from X-Men: TAS
Hermes from Futurama
Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats
John Henry Irons from Superman: TAS, JLU
For the record, I don't like John Stewart or Virgil Hawkins. ....In fact, I hate most black superheroes. Obvious tokens that they are. Stewart's not a token though--I just find him a poor GL who would get owned by his much more imaginative comic version. (Stupid simple constructs.) Virgil just went downhill as they made him more stupid and his sidekick more of a genius. When the series started, he was incredibly intelligent. By the end, he couldn't keep up with Gears when he didn't even have his powers.
(Before anyone says anything about racism, I'm black. I just don't like token characters.)
tb4000
02-12-2006, 07:12 PM
^Oh, you can still be black and racist towards your own. ;)
Not that I think that you are, just making a statement. I agree that some are tokens, as many shows satirize that fact with some of their own characters.

Buddy's cartoons were much blander than Bosko's because at least Bosko was mischievous. :bosko:

huey from boondocks
claudia grant from robotech
the fat albert gang
panthro from thundercats
jazz from transformers
as kids when i was growing up , we always identified these last two as black because of their voice actors.....(scatman caruthers, and whoever played grandpa huxtable on the cosby show)
i also think there is alot of tokenism out there and the comics john stewart is the superior version. (like 90% of DCAU)

Obvioulsy Storm, Cyborg, and Green Lantern are all great in my book.
Am I the only one whose favorite black Simpsons character is Lou? He and Wiggum are hilarious! I once heard Hank Azaria say that Lou's voice is his impersonation of Sylvester Stallone. Oh, and Drederick Tatum is also amusing.
Elisa Maza is half-black, thought I'd throw that out there.

This is really a sore spot for me as I have long been bothered by the low numbers of quality black characters and ever more bothered by the number of stereotypes that have been forced into my TV and movie screens. But, her goes:
1. Riley Freeman (the Boondocks)
2. Huey Freeman (the Boondocks)
There is a real black person between the two of them
3. Frylock (ATHF)

FILLMORE! Fillmore, the show, was clever and interesting, and Fillmore, the character, was incredibly cool. Also, Fillmore wasn't a character defined by being black, like many other black cartoon characters, and he wasn't the goofy sidekick either. He was a strong lead, and it wasn't like watching Green Lantern, where you're thinking "I guess the Justice League needed a black character to keep them PC". Fillmore could have just as easily been Asian or white.
(P.S. I like Justice League! I was just making a point...)
Also, coming in second place, is DuBois from The Boondocks. What a little whiny baby. Gosh I love him.

My favorites are Mary Melody from Tiny Toons, Foxxy Love from Drawn Together... heck, just about any black female Cree Summer voices! I also like the characters who are voiced by Phil Lamarr and Kevin Michael Richardson.
Also, Peter Griffin? I was surprised... until I realized that there was an episode of Family Guy where Peter had black ancestry. So he might count.

Cornelius Fillmore (Filmore)
John Stewart (Justice League/Unlimited)
Vixen (JLU)
Virgil Hawkins and his family (Static Shock)
Oscar Proud (The Proud Family - probably one of the few reasons I managed to watch the show after the "Napster" episode)
The Freemans (The Boondocks)
Cleveland Brown (Family Guy)
Cyborg (Teen Titans)
"Mammy Two-Shoes" (Tom and Jerry - though I'm not fond of the official nickname of the character, I enjoy the character herself, strong, independent woman living in her own home, enjoying life, and clearly the boss of the house)
Maxine Gibson (Batman Beyond - yeah, I'm one of the few that likes this character)
Monie (Hey Monie)
Cyborg 008 (Cyborg 009 - though I didn't like the "Sambo" look the earlier incarnations had, I do enjoy this character)
Is Melissa on "Home Movies" supposed to be Black? If so, she's on my list too.

TOM AND JERRY's Mammy Two-Shoes
FAMILY GUY's Cleveland Brown
SOUTH PARK's Token Williams/Black (his last name changes from episode to episode)

Well, her chin was shown once; also in the comic book version of "Tom and Jerry", her face is very visible.

Its weird isnt it? How often someone asks is blank character supposed to be black? Often were not quite sure espicially in anime. Captain Tousan and Yoroichi are pretty good examples of this and wikipedia gives some insight. Im still not quite sure about bear walken and Sherri.

I don't know what Bosko is.
Personally, I like characters that don't particularly look like anything I can recognize.
I don't think Mickey Mouse looks all that much like a mouse, or that Ren & Stimpy look like a mosquito or cat, respectively.
Is my avatar a black guy?
Honestly, when I made it I didn't think about it one way or another.
I don't think I thought about that until this morning.
