Game Description: Capcom has decided to remake the original Resident Evil for the Nintendo DS. But it's not just a port, it uses the touch screen of the DS to its full potential. The knife can easily be pulled out to slash at enemies like in Resident Evil 4. But that's not all. Because it can now be pulled out, there will be a free spot in your inventory, which anybody who has played this game before knows how great that is. With the extra screen, your map will constantly be displayed, and while that may not seem very important, not having to pause the game to make sure you are going the right way is great. And with the stylus, when zombies grab you, you must literally shake them off. But there's more, like an all new multiplayer mode, which can be played with DS to DS or with wifi. In it, you compete against somebody to finish a level, which sounds like it could be really fun.
Price: $34.99
Release Date: 2/7/06
I know that I will be picking this up as soon as it comes out. I can't wait to see how using the stylus feels and seeing what the microphone is used for(Gamestop said that it was used for healing injured teamates, which means it is probably used in the multiplayer mode). The DS has got to be the greatest gift I've ever recieved, I already have three great games for it and now there are two more coming out(this game included).

Normally I think pretty highly of the DS, but this is one game that never fails to underwhelm me with its screenshots. Does anyone else feel the same way?
This doesn't mean it couldn't be a great game, but it just makes me grimace when I see it.

It's a quasi-rerelease of the original PSX version, they just added the First person view on the bottom so you could use the knife to stab the zombies with the stylus. The Zombies on the bottom screen look like they came out of the RE FPS like Dead Aim. Considering the GC version gave a much nicer visual presenttation and remastered levels and visuals(and is 14 bucks cheaper for a new copy) this one is a bit on the "meh" scale in terms of remakes/ports. There's no new endings or story lines either in single player, it's pretty much the same game that was released 10 years ago. The Multiplayer mode seems to be a bit similar set up to the Resident Evil Online games, but it's main goal for the three different multiplayer levels is to get to the end of the level first before the other players.
I'd more or less wait for this to become a sale item so you could pick it up 40-70% off, I mean it still has the same voice overs of the original and all, and the Original original RE for PSX can still be had easily.

Hasn't this game already had 4 other re-releases? How could anybody buy this game went it's so obvious that Capcom is just trying to milk even more money out of it?

Meh, Street Fighter II has more versions, so it's not breaking the set record or anything

Ah, Deadly Silence, the "Hey, Capcom's actually attempting to use the DS functions to their advantage" game.
Bless 'em for trying... given the age of the PSone game, I guess it shows in a modern handheld.

Eh, it's possible to beat the game without using the DS abilities, infact they have a mode for it in the game itself.
It's not as intergraited as some other games, it's more or less along the lines of what Castlevania did or what Guilty gear DS is going to do.

Yes, that's called "Retro Mode" or "Anniversary Mode" or something, right? The mode you play if you want to play it like the original, not the mode you play if... you want to play an appropriate DS game.
And I'd say Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers manages to use the dual screen function of the DS pretty damn importantly.

It takes up the two screens, but the stylus feature is just for mini-games, as is the microphone. Regular fighting is done with the buttons.

Yes, but saying the dual screen/vertical screen isn't a feature of the DS takes away one of the powers of the DS. Single-screen games, even if they had function of the stylus, are something that, say, could have been done on the next GB or something.

But it's not using the touch screen as a touch screen, just as a normal regular screen pretty much. The dual screen may be exclusive, but the entire concept of vertical 2D fighters has been implemented before.
the minigames are the only things that use the touchscreen as a touch screen and use the microphone, but they're the equivelent of the Street Fighter II bonus games.
However the thing I'm more curious about is if the down button problem was resolved, initialy it was said that it was very easy to drop down a level accidentaily while pulling off a combo or a special that used the down button in the sequence. I really don't want it to be another Lunar that made the doublescreen a hinderance to the game battle system. But supposedly the command was changed so you had to press down twice to drop a level.

1 I don't want a DS. 2 The DS functions in it seem really LAME. 3 I got REDC for PS. 4 If i ever get another RE1 it will be the GC remake if i get a GC.
Re1 has been remade time and time again. Why do we need what is essentialy the old PS1 version with minigames?
Not impressed.

I always thought Richard was the coolest Bravo Team member, which is a shame because from what I hear, this time you resuscitate him with the breathing-dealy and he dies shortly afterward when playing as either Jill or Chris

How many fighting games involve having to use a screen that's twice as tall as it long? The closest comparisons I can come up with are when you could uppercut someone into an upper level on a Mortal Kombat game.

Are they minigames? From the impression I've gotten, they're fully integrated components (IE, there are times when you'll have to resuscitate someone, and you'll have to slash away zombies... IN THE GAME).

Cheap hash or not I've always wanted a good Resident Evil game that was portable. The Game.com and Tiger electronic versions of Resident Evil 2 were neat, but don't hold a torch to the one for DS. Besides if nobody hasn't noticed yet, I'm a huge Resident Evil whore. ;)

The potential invalidity of that statement (examples, please) aside, how is "it's been implemented before" at all relevant? The quality and originality of the implementation of something is more important than whether or not it, at its basis, has been done before. This all just sounds like more "I'm going to nit-pick at the DS for no real reason" stigma.
As for RE:DS, I'd love to have a portable version of the game to play, but I think I'll stick with the GC remake for now. There are too many great DS titles coming out to throw money at a game I already have.

Oh, bravo for GG: DS even adding mini-games. Probably have to unlock some characters that way or something.
Either way, the game boils down to being only playable on the DS via the vertical screen.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I've had the game for over a week and I can easily say this was a great buy. Instead of difficulty settings, it just has Jill as normal and Chris as hard. I naturally picked Chris to play first on classic mode, to see what the game was like. And hard it was, many times I ran out of ammo and was forced to kill zombies with my knife(which is a great new feature). All the cheesy cut scenes are intact, which could be could be considered to be bad, but I like it.
Upon beating Chris on classic, I was rewarded with Kenneth for use in Multi Card play. Currently, I'm now trying Jill on Classic, and you wouldn't believe how much easier it is. I figure I can unlock every character for use in multi card play, since the booklet gives info on all of them. The only part that I think that sucks about this RE: DS is that you need multiple cards to play multiplayer. It's going to be hard to find somebody else with this game.
