View Full Version : Biggest laugh in a classic cartoon?

A topic like this comes up every once in a while, and it's about time it showed up again! What single scene in a classic cartoon has made you laugh the hardest? One of my biggest laughs came in "Uncle Tom's Cabana", when Simon Legree sees Little Eva for the first time, and his "cash register" pops out (shockingly suggestive, I must say!). What was your biggest laugh?

In the same cartoon, when the train runs over Uncle Tom and when he gets sawed in half ("Hold on now boy, I's really goin'!").

When Elmer Fudd is dressed in drag in The Big Snooze.

When Foghorn Leghorn leads the cat under water and keeps talking under water in a Fractured Leghorn ("I need air! My lungs crave air!").

"Kitty Kornered" - "Are we men?? Or are we mice???" "I like cheeeeeeese!" "SMACK! - Ah! I think I've got it!" "The cheese?" "SMACK!"

"The Barber of Seville" - The timing and expression on Woody's face works, and is hilarious in this one!

"Porky's Duck Hunt" - A cross-eyed hunter sees a duck, shoots at it, and ends up shooting down TWO planes! LOL

"As the Crow Lies" - "Well, I guess that cures his hiccups for good!" After Buzzy says this, we then see Katnip's nine lives flying out of the hole, STILL hiccupping!

"The Turn-Tale Wolf" - "We were playing 'Swat the Fly'. I was the fly of course." "SWAT THE FLY! SWAT THE FLY!"

"Mouse Cleaning" - "Hey you! Has you seen a no good cat around here?!?!" "No mam, I seen no cat 'round here, uh-uh! No cat, no place, no how, no MAM!"

"The Truce Hurts" - "And mice can get along with cats, CAN'T THEY?!?!" (Jerry shakes his head "no" slowly; Spike glares at him; Jerry shakes head "yes" very fast)

"A Bicep Built for Two" - Who else can't help but laugh during Katnip's totally off-key version of "I'm in the Mood for Love"?

"The Iceman Ducketh" (1964) - in french version, Daffy say "On peut parler normalement?, Bugs say "quoi?", Daffy say again "on peut parler normalement?, Bugs replic "je ne vous entends pas!". Daffy say the up voice "Est-ce qu'on peut reparler normalement!" A avalanche blow Daffy on dawn. Bugs say Non!" pas encore!" and for finish, Daffy say "Merci infiniment!"

"Catty Cornered" (1953) - Tweety say "OOh! The poor puddy cat want dawn!" Rocky replic "Yeap! The puddy cat want dawn!"

"Whoa, Be Gone" - Wile E. is trying to balance on a highwire on a wheel strapped to his crash helmet. Just when you think he's gonna go, the wire breaks! Funny...

"Be Patient, Patient" - the Fox & Crow, covered in cement, freeze as the fox chases the crow. The end gag has them on a statue pedestal labeled "Vice vs. Virtue". Hilarious every time I watch it...

"A Mouse In The House" - the blackface gag when the gas stove blows up on Tom & Butch...

Porky's Duck Hunt: the "You like my duck? Huah huah huah!" scene. Also when Porky points the gun at his dog.

Shiver Me Timbers: Popeye bursts out of the cabin and finds a bunch of skelatons dancing on the main deck. The way everything is juxtaposed and the timing makes me laugh every time. The B&W version is funnier.

Who Killed Who?: The bodies falling out of the closet. "A lot of us, isn't there?"

Without a doubt it's Mouse Trouble, when Tom sits on the bear trap, leaps up and gets his head stuck in the ceiling. The shot of him hanging there with the trap clamped to his rear as his screams are muffled is just too funny.

WB cartoons:

"Feline Frameup": Claude is making faces at Marc Anthony, who promptly stomps on the floorboard that catapults Claude on the inside!

"Geee Whizzz": the rocket with handlebars.

"Lickety Splat": Wile E. is stuck in the ground, and a couple of his firecracker bomb darts land beside him. Just as he thinks they are going to explode, they spell "The End", and the Coyote laughs.

"To beep or Not To Beep" : The catapults

"Birdy and the Beast": "Da poor puddy tat, he fawl down, go BOOM!"

"Go Go Amigo": mouse #1: "It's a transistor radio!" mouse #2: "Hey, I have a seester who looks like a train!"

"Hareabian Nights: Bugs says "Don't call us, we'll call you....and I can think of a few things I'd like to call him!"

"Buddy's Beer Garden": the talking beer mugs. I know, it's the most juvenine gag in the book, but it gets me every time, maybe because it's so bad.

"Scaredy Cat": Sylvester's reactions

"Buckeroo Bugs:" when Bugs 'robs' Red Hot Ryder with a magnet

MGM cartoons:

"Old Rockin' Chair Tom": the scene involving the iron and the magnet.

"The Million Dollar Cat": Tom says, "gee, I'm throwin a way a MILLION DOLLARS. but I'M HAPPY!!!! Yahahahahhh!"

"Batty Baseball": A fan yells "KILL the umpire!" over and over again, and somebody literally shoots the umpire!

"Red Hot Riding Hood": the whole cartoon

"Symphony in Slang": the "Cat Got your tongue?" gag

I suppose is from the episode I think is called 'Robin The Daffy' (Shown today on UK Toonheads in 'Robin Hood through the ages, followed by 'Fight Night' including some old cartoons)where Daffy Duck (As Robin Hood) says 'Yoiks, and away!' and flys down a rope on a tree, only to smack into another one. He says 'Yoiks..and awayy' this time more dazed, and hits another tree. This happens another 12 times. So at the end he cuts down all the trees in his path, goes to the top tree, says 'Yoiks, and away!' swings down above the tree stump path, and hits a giant rock! Classic!

Buckaroo Bugs - "I sure whaaaat?" "Stink, you fool! Stink!"

The Big Snooze - "No, run like this."

Robin Hood Daffy - I also like the "Yoiks, and away!" scene.

(It might've been) A Fractured Leghorn - "When someone tells me to shut up, I shut up..." at the end.

Porky Pig's Feat - The entire thing.

If you're talking about the biggest laugh in real life -- i.e. actually watching the cartoons in a theater today -- I've found that the biggest laughs (when a number of `toons are shown at the same time) come from the cartoons that don't air that much on TV. That's probably because the audience for those showings knows almost all the gags from the often-played cartoons by heart, but if you show them one where they don't know what's going to happen five minutes ahead of time, the laughs are far greater.

The biggest single laugh I've heard in a theater came from Daffy's "Well, what do you know? The little light -- it stays on!" from Frank Tashlin's rarely-seen "Plane Daffy." The biggest laughs from cartoons in the regular rotation were for Tex Avery's "Magical Maestro" (the uncut version), the squaredance scene from McKimson's "Hillbilly Hare," Daffy's "Yikes and Away!" tree collisions in Jones' "Robin Hood Daffy" and Sylvester's Swedish maid/Rochester voice switch from Freleng's "I Taw A Putty Tat" (which, of course, is now also a rarely- or never-seen gag, but wasn't when I saw it in the theater).

Cat-tails For Two- (WB) George clouts Benny on the Head, which bounces back and hammers himself on the noggin. "Why did you hit yourself on the head for, George?"

"I like it, see, I like it" :D

Kitty Foiled- (MGM) When Tom chases Jerry through the bearskin rug, and the bird jumps down on the head of it and it clamps down on Tom's neck. The vibrating tongue along with the razzing sound effect kills me every time!!

Push-Button Kitty- (MGM) When the wind-up mice are being set free, and the robot cat is going wild. After he shoots at the plates (and hits every single one :bosko: ), he proceeds to saw a priceless mahogany table in half, and smashes the piano with an axe..... I laugh just at the senseless destruction the T&J cartoons are known for.

Droopy's Good Deed- "This deserves a bit of a reward, son. Fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty...." BLAMM!!!! "fifteen hundred trillion billion and two bits"

Barber Of Seville- (Lantz) "No chiefy, me give you scalp treatment..." "BONG!!!!!"

Tortoise Wins By A Hare- (WB) Bugs' soliloquy at the beginning, especially when he says "How...does...that...MORON.. do it?? I'll find out his secret if it's the LAST THING I EVER DO!!!.....and I will, too!!"

Fractured Leghorn- (WB) Same as Dawg's, when Foggy is badgering the cat, even when he goes through the water trough.

Back Alley Oproar- (WB) After Sylvester eats the alum, and his head shrinks along with his voice.

A Hound for Trouble - Charlie Dog is pretending to be a waiter and this customer wants this dish with a long, complicated Italian name. Then Charlie soon tells him that they are out of the dish, followed by him sticking out his tongue. Also, the grape-stomping scene and the customer's reaction.

Mibbitmaker

Little Boy Boo (WB) - Foggy: " Naw, I'd better not. I just might be in there!"

To Duck or not to Duck (WB) - "There's something awfully screwy about this fight, or my name isn't Laramore... And it isn't."

Larry T

The Unruly Hare- (WB) "Only a big, fat RAT would shoot a guy in the back......." BLAM!!! "So I'm a big, fat RAT! Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha"....... "Aaahhhh, Have some cheese, RAT!!"

The Bee-Deviled Bruin- (WB) After Junyer knocks the bee off of Papa bear's nose, the resulting sequence where Papa gently places the dead bee on Junyer's nose then bashes him in the face with the shovel....

Similarly, What's Brewin' Bruin?- (WB) where Junyer realizes he's made Papa mad by clobbering him wearing the moose head, he jumps offscreen, comes back and hands Papa a hairbrush, then bends over for a spanking. Papa grabs a mallet and jumps in front of Junyer to bash him over the skull with it... hilarious!!

Who's Cookin' Who?- - (Lantz) Starvation tells Woody there's a wolf at the door. "A Wolf!?!?", then pulls up a book entitled "How to cook a wolf". He appears in the next scene dressed up as Red Riding Hood calling, "Here, Wolfie Wolfie"......Similarly, the wolf learns Red Riding Hood is at the door, and pulls up his own book, "New Ways To Cook Red Riding Hood".... Now that's funny!!

Mother Goose On The Loose- (Lantz) Jack-be-nimble jumps over the candlestick. Narrator (in a very quivery, almost uncertain tone of voice): "Ah- you'd better be careful Jack, you'll get burnt"..... Jack:"Not me, I'm too quick", but he lands with his sleeper on fire which prompty burns off, leaving Jack naked and rubbing his burning butt on the floor. Narrator:"Well, that's a new kind of hot foot, ha-ha"

Dough Ray Me-ow- (WB) Heathcliff is playing train. Louie sticks a tin can on top of his head and kicks him in the butt to start him walking along a railroad track. Heathcliffe- "Daaahhh- Choo, choo!!" (some game :) ) When the train collides with him, and is seriously demolished, Heathcliffe replies, "I done a bad thing" and sheds a single tear..... :D

The Squaredance sequence from Hillbilly Hare. When this came on June Bugs, the first time I saw the cartoon, I was laughing my brains out. To those who have never seen this episode, DO NOT eat ANYTHING or drink ANYTHING while this cartoon is on.

In Kitty Kornered , when Porky is busy trying to spit out the line, "Why I'll show them who's, who's, ah who's, who's b-b-b--b, who's who's" and the cartoon fades out as if it has a mind not to sit and wait for him.

Plus, there's the hilarious scene when Sylvester rams into the wall under the moosehead, screams, then jumps out of the way so Porky can smash headfirst into the same spot in the wall. Senseless, but funny :D !! Gets me laughing every time!!

Screwball Squirrel- (geez, what part of this cartoon is NOT funny?) anyway, when Screwy walks Sammy over to the tree as he babbles on, talking faster and faster until he's just out of sight- CRASH!! BAM!! WHAP!! CLUNK! SMASH!!. Screwy comes out dusting off his hands as "Taps" plays on the soundtrack- "Aw, you wouldn't have liked that cartoon anyway"

You guys sure picked some good ones. Here are some of my choices.

In "Jerky Turkey", where the pilgrim hunter is firing thousands of bullets at the turkey with the use of his machine gun/musket. Suddenly, the turkey stops and "opens" his chest to reveal a Superman outfit beneath which repels all the hunter's bullets!

In "Barney's Hungry Cousin", where Barney, in an attempt to stop the other bear from eating everything in sight, pours alum into the bear's mouth, which puckers and shrinks it, just as the bear was about to devour a turkey. Not to be outdone, the bear grabs the can of alum from Barney's hand and pours it over the turkey, causing the turkey *itself* to shrink to a tiny size until it is small enough to fit inside the bear's puckered mouth and be legitimitely eaten.

I know this is mainly a serious cartoon (and, in some parts, downright disturbing) but the brief "funny" moment in "Education for Death" with the faux "Sleeping Beauty" fairy tale of Prince Hitler trying to "save" princess Germany and haul the mighty woman onto his faithful steed floors me every time (a nice touch is when they march off into the distance and all the forest's tree give the salute with their branches!).

Finally, in "The Dover Boys", in the clamactic fight with Dan Backslide, just when the trio is about to deliver their final punch against their foe, he is so weak from his beating that he collapses to the floor, causing the "ready-to-punch" Dover boys to knock themselves out!

I get a real kick out of the early Daffy Duck cartoons (made before 1950). I always laugh at Tex Avery's "Magical Maestro" and "Symphony in Slang." Also the early Fleischer cartoon, "Betty Boop's Bizzy Bee" is also funny. The funniest part is Bimbo's conversation with Betty, "Got any weat cakes?" The Woody cartoons from the 40s are funny too, I love "Knock, Knock," "Ski for Two," as well as "The Beach Nut" with its beach that shall we say carries one away? I LOVE the Flip the Frog cartoons the most, though, they're hilarious!:p

Also from Dover...

"DEAR, RICH DORIS STANPIPE, HOW I LOVE HER...father's money."

Zoom at the Top (WB) - Wile E. freezing himself, then, when he uses a magnifying glass to thaw, he melts...away :D

...And my favorite payoff from the same cartoon: ".....ouch....."
:D :D

Blooper Bunny - Daffy says to Bugs "You smug son-of-a" then quick cut.

Knighty-Knight Bugs or Sahara Hare - Yosemite Sam's repeated attempts to storm the Castle/Legion Post "Open up that door!"
Door/drawbridge crushes him and he cries in a muffled voice : "Close it, close it up again!"

From Hare to Heir -
Sam, hiding in a suit of armor, swings an axe and misses Bugs, falling down multiple flights of stairs, cursing all the way down.

Hound Hunters -
The "dog suit" gags, and Juniors reaction to the tiny dog - "He bit me George. He bit me"

Pete Puma's line in Rabbit's Kin -
"I don't like tea...it gives me a headache!"

...and pretty much all the moments you guys have mentioned, especially Robin Hood Daffy
(Porky was never funnier in support of Daffy) and the Three Bears.

I have my two:

1) Wile E. going through the center of the earth, ends up in China, and gets "gonged" by the Raod Runner in the final scene of War And Pieces (1963).

2) After Sylvester goes straight to China, this is Tweety's final line in Tweey And The Beanstalk (1956): "Oooo, I taw I taw this honorable puddy tat!"

I could not have laughed any harder watching those scenes.

Here are some more scenes that make me die laughing...

Many of the gags in "Blitz Wolf" are excellent such as the Pigs' unprovoked bombing of Japan (the country, along with the rising sun, literally sinks off the map), the Pigs blame Japan's disappeance on "Doolittle", "You missed me! You missed me! You didn't even touch me" followed by Adolf's standing in front of a lamp revealing the holes in his body, and finally the ending (with card, "THE END... of Adolf. If you'll buy a stamp or bond, we'll skin that skunk across the pond!").

The brief scene in "Crazy Mixed Up Pup" where Maggie goes to answer the door, calmly and carefully stepping around Rover. After she is finished walking around the mutt, Rover, without any warning at all, gets up and does a brief softshoe routine, turns it over to Maggie, then returns to his restful position.

The scene in "No Hunting" where, after the narrator says, "The spirit of our forefathers within us awakens an irrisistible urge to hunt wild game", Donald briefly transmutes into a roaring lion, then bursts down the door, gets in his car, drives over his lawn, and onto the highway heading for the hunting grounds (marked by bullet-ridden billboards and signs). Meanwhile, the local residents "prepare" for the hunters' arrival, specifically a farmer boarding up his property with stockade barriers, then heading with his animals for the nearest "fallout shelter", his cellar. One last precaution is taken by the hayseed: He paints the word "cow" onto his pet bovine.

Here are a few more of my favorites....

The Dover Boys: when the boys charge into Backslide's cabin and Tom is in such a rush he points to various objects, shouting, "Unhand her, Dan Backslide!", finally pointing to Dan on the third try. Then to the audience Tom says, "Hey, we're getting in a rut!"

Ghesundtite!"

Herr Meets Hare: Bugs as Stalin. "Does your tobacco taste different lately?"

Wabbit Twouble: Fudd is in such a hurry to leave the camp ground that he uproots a tree and takes it with him, returning to gently place it back into the ground and shrug at the camera.

Little Quacker: Jerry and Quacker hide in a rubber tire and Tom hits it with a mallet, striking himself in the face when it bounces off.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned this scene from Clampett's AN ITCH IN TIME
Elmer's dog, under attack by "Home Around The Corner Flea", is dragging his bottom along the floor, screaming - then he abruptly stops, turns toward us and says:

"I'd better cut this out - I might get to LIKE it!" (pant-pant-pant)

P.S. The Bashful Buzzard's parade of "menu items", from Old MacDonald milking his cow to "I AM NOT DUMBO!"
P.S.S. Beaky's Mom stuffing the elephant's rump into the cookpot.

I saw this late 50s Hanna/Barbera Droopy cartoon last night starring Daws Butler's laid back wolf character. I'm really sorry that I dont remember the name of the cartoon, but the wolf kept trying to steal Droopy's sheep. The actual gags in this cartoon are not really that funny, but the Wolf's lines made me crack up, "I'm Little Bo Peep, ya'll" The other cartoons starring this character also make me laugh, mainly thanks to Butler's line delivery.

The "Ya Never Even Touched Me" scene in "Blitz Wolf"

One more scene:

Mickey's Amateurs (Disney) - Donald pulls out a machine gun, and tries singing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" again. The audience laughs at him forgetting it, so Donald goes mad and fires the machine gun repeatedly at EVERYBODY (including Mickey!)!!! :p

I did not know THAT was the way it was said! I must have said it in the way that Tweety and Sylvester appeared as special guests in Prime Minister's Questions. Then Tweety could have called Sylvester a "right-honorable" puddy tat.

The final scene in Baby bottleneck with the Daffy/porky baby when porky's "head" pops out of the diaper and says boo. I'm suprised this ever got by the censors of 1945.

I think biggest laughs come from anything Tex Avery did in his early period at MGM-screwy squirel/any of the many red cartoons are probably the best

Speaking of baby bottle, my biggest laugh from that masterpiece is the sequence where Porky tries to get Daffy to sit on the egg. That scene is excellent.

The funniest cartoon moment would be that entire Tex Avery cartoon where the dog is trying to sleep, and this scrawny looking rooster keeps crowing, no matter what the dog does to him. I can't remember the title, though.
Another good one is "Mickey's Trailer", although just like the previous one, it's hard to pick one scene.

In "Rabbit Seasoning," the stylishly disguised Bugs says he would "love a duck dinner," then kisses Elmer, whose reaction is a howl (watch his cap)! With big eyes and a wide goofy smile, he cradles his shotgun and staggers to Daffy.

"Beanstalk Bunny" is highlighted by Daffy's pantomine animation when he's trapped in the bell jar with Bugs.

Road Runnerus Digestus makes a mistake with a grenade in "Zipping Along." Love that lip-sagging take!

That would be "Cock-a-Doodle Dog", and you're right, it's a classic! My favorite part is where Spike, though very tired, still has enought energy to grab the rooster, run about fifteen miles up the mountain, and tie the rooster to the tree!

The whole cartoon is hilarious:

- "I'm a good speller. C-A-T, dog. B-A-T, Rhode Island."

- "It's Father's Day, Henry."

- "Pa, come back, and I will shave you good!"

- The whole musical number at the end.

Truly one of Chuck Jones' finest.

"the whole thing" of both "Kiss Me Cat" and "Forward March Hare" made me laugh my head off when I first saw them. Unfortuneatley, both were on early-Saturday-morning occasions when my folks were sleeping...:D

Abbot-Give me the bird...GIVE ME THE BIRD!
Castello-If only the Hanes office would let me, I'll give him the bird alright!

Smile, Darn Ya, Smile -WB
The Hippo talking backwards and saying "HARUMPH!"

Of Course... I could name a lot more!

I'm probably alone in this, but I thought the "chicken of the sea" gag in Fresh Fish was hilarious. It's not often that I laugh out loud at these old cartoons, but just the insane jerking around of the tuna and the rapid clucking sounds it made and...man, I love that gag. Tex was a god.

Also, the narrator calmly and frankly telling the two headed fish looking for Mr. Ripley, "Please leave." Love it. That's such an underrated short.

Another favorite is from Little Red Riding Rabbit (I think that's the title). "I brought you a little bunny rabbit...TO HAVE!" The repeating of "TO HAVE!" throughout the cartoon cracks me up every time. "Those sure are big teeth, TO HAVE!"
