'He's a Pinball Wizard, there's got to be a twist...'

Okay now I can finally say I've seen everything as of this moment...

I was browsing through Cynopsis Kids!, daily articles and right at the top of the February 1st, 2005, issue of the article Listings, I found this really interesting article..

I read it once...
I read it again..
and I blinked..
The Who's Rock Opera, Tommy ....
Animated..
My mouth hit the floor..

but there it was..
in black and white..

Tommy...animated..

According to the article..:

Introduced in 1969 as an original concept album, The Who's Tommy went on to be adapted for the big screen (1975) and later as a musical on Broadway. Now word is that producer Robert Stigwood (of Greasefame) is planning to create an animated feature film based on the movie version of Tommy, according to a Contact Music report. Stigwood is quoted as saying that the animated movie, with the approval and support of band member and creator of the rock opera Pete Townshend, would be budgeted at between $300-400 million. It was also reported that voice-over cast might include Bono and Robbie Williams.

Can we say...
interesting idea and concept?

Can we also say..
that's 300 to 400 Million Dollars worth of maybe 'a flop'?

if this piece of animation were to be created, could a movie based upon a 1960's rock opera Story which has proven itself in both Live adction movie and even a Broadway Musical, be animated and be 'viable'?

Or is this just what I figure it could be...
A complete waste of Talent, resources, and/or Money?

Let's open up the lines and hear your thoughts on this one..

Is Tommy worth to be Animated, or
has this one got 'TILT' written all over it?

The Lines are now open..

Edited note: This was Febraruy 1 2005 Not 2006 as originally thought

I had imagined Grease as an animated film starring a cast of furries. It wouldn't have worked.

It sounds like an awful idea, but trying to be open minded about it, weirder sounding ideas have ended up working. It wasn't that long ago that I was filled with bemusement when I read that Ang Lee was making a martial arts film. Of course, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a wonderful film.

The funny thing here is that the movie version of Tommy is practically a cartoon already. Ken Russell, the film's director, has such an over the top visual style (kind of like the Baz Luhrman of the '70's) that the film Tommy just misses being a camp masterpiece.

Glad it never went down. I don't think it would've really taken off the ground. Not to mention the sad truth about the pinball industry dying in the states. Although I can't help, but think David Gottlieb and Harry Williams must be crying some where when they showed the pinball machines being destroyed.:anime:

If it was the bigget hit ever it wouldn't be worth it.
But this is wanted about as much as Heavy Metal 2000.

Nothing ever came of it, fortunately. Much like Doozy Bots. Really bad ideas have a way of getting flushed down the toilet. (But sometimes, a turd will float back up. And we all can name examples of that.) (^_*)
