Diamond Distributors has released their Direct Market sales charts based on preorders for January 2002, and it is proving to be one of the most interesting top 100 charts in recent memory. Marvel isn't on top spot for a change, and DC Comics finally come out on top for a change. The full top 300 will be released shortly.
As anticipated, easily the number #1 comic in terms of units sold is DC’s Batman: The 10 Cent Adventure, outselling the #2 book by around 400,000 at the least, 500,000 at the most. Though Diamond does not release actual sales figures, the estimates seem to be in the 750,000 to 800,000 units sold range, including the preorders. Discuss Batman: The 10 Cent Adventure HERE. This has proven to be a big hit for DC Comics. Actual sales numbers are expected to be released eventually, though.
Also, Batman: The 10 Cent Adventure ranks 67th on Diamond Distributor's charts in terms of dollar share, the amount retailers spent on each issue. It looks like this stunt by DC has paid off!
Clocking in at the #2 spot is Marvel’s Origin #6, the concluding chapter to the Wolverine mini-series and one of the few projects in recent history, or possibly ever, that has consistently seen increased orders month after month, came in second, ahead of The Dark Knight Strikes Again #2. While DK2 #2 came in at #3, sales are expected around 240,000, a bit less than Origin #6's estimated 250,000. A main factor is likely DKS #2's steep cover price, but DK2 will no doubt benefit from more reorders as the seires progresses. DK2 #2 could easily reach 275,000 - 290,000 with reorders, depending on consumer reaction.
Funny thing is, Origin #2 will not make it to comic shelves in January, while DK2 #2, just barely will - shipping on January 30th. DK2 #3 will also see a new street date, likely in March. DK2 #2 is the #1 comics in dollar share for the month, though.
Coming in at #4 is another Marvel title. It was the first ongoing series to chart and the month’s biggest series debut as well, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates. Orders came in at around 170,000 copies, but an extra 50,000 were printed, putting the print run in the estimated 225,000 range. This makes The Ultimates #1 the highest debuting new title in a long time, since the mid-1990's.
Back to Batman as there is more good news for the Dark Knight! In anticipation of increased interest due to Batman: The 10 Cent Adventure and the "Bruce Wayne: Fugitive" crossover storyline, DC’s Batman-family books saw a big increase on the charts this month, particularly Detective Comics and Batman, which rose to #18 and #22 on the chart, respectively, from #37 and #29 on December 2001’s preorder chart. Expect reorders on these titles to be big when reaction for Batman: The 10 Cent Adventure hits. If the reaction is good, the reorders could skyrocket the Batman titles. Also, the Superman titles have seen a little raise in sales, with Adventures of Superman #600 outshining Superman.
