Reuters reports that the domestic movie box office totaled $8.35 billion in ticket sales in 2001, topping the $8 billion mark for the first time ever, final figures showed Wednesday.

The box office gained nearly 8.5% from 2000's $7.7 billion, which was the previous annual record, according to Los Angeles-based Exhibitor Relations Inc.

Unlike recent years, movie attendance also rose in 2001 to an estimated 1.49 billion admissions, up from 1.42 billion in 2000 and slightly ahead of the recent, modern-day high for movie attendance of 1.48 billion admissions set in 1998.

WB played a big part in this, grossing around $1.24 billion dollars, a hefty chunk of the overall box office gross for 2001.

The average estimated ticket price for 2001 climbed to $5.60 from $5.40, according to Exhibitor Relations. But final admission and ticket price figures are released each year by the Motion Picture Assn. of America in March, so the Exhibitor Relations figures are preliminary.
