Certainly went faster than The Venture Bros. renewal.

The Boondocks Gets Greenlight for Season Two

20 New Episodes of Hit Adult Swim Series to Debut Beginning in Winter 2006
Adult Swim has given the greenlight for a second season of The Boondocks, the new hit series from creator Aaron McGruder, based on his award-winning comic strip of the same name. The network has ordered 20 new episodes of the series, which is produced by McGruder's production company, Rebel Base, in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Called “brilliantly funny” and “a water cooler series that lives up to the hype,” the series made its premiere on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005. It ranked as the best series premiere in Adult Swim history, and has consistently ranked among the top programs on basic cable each week among young adult viewers. This month, The Boondocks was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

New episodes are expected on Adult Swim in late 2006. Ten episodes of the initial 15-episode orderhave already aired this season.
“Thank God for The Boondocks and Aaron McGruder,” said Mike Lazzo, Cartoon Network’s senior vice president, programming and production, responsible for Adult Swim.

“Adult Swim’s passion for this show has been evident from day one, and we’re thrilled to be on this journey together. Aaron has created a group of amazing characters that tell entertaining and thought provoking stories, and we are so grateful to have found the perfect home for them,” said Zack Van Amburg, Co-President, Programming & Production for Sony Pictures Television.

In The Boondocks, when Robert “Granddad” Freeman becomes legal guardian of his rambunctious grandkids, he moves from the south side of Chicago to the quiet and safety of “The Boondocks” (in this case, suburban Woodcrest), hoping that he can ignore them altogether and enjoy the fourth quarter of his life in peace. But Huey, a 10-year-old left wing revolutionary, is determined not to enjoy the affluence of suburbia. This attitude is seconded by his 8-year-old brother, Riley, a proud product of contemporary rap culture. Although they torture each other and provoke the neighborhood, they are no match for Granddad, who is eccentric even by “crazy-ass-old-black-man” standards.

I thought the hype, controversy, and ratings would've died down, but apparently it didn't, so I guess season 2 is a given.

Here's hoping the show has a MAJOR improvement.

Not surprised by this move at all. Good for Aaron and co.

Well that's probably due to getting near a million each week in the ratings. That is very good news though (and with the Late 06 mention, it means that there won't be that long a wait for the new season either). I'm hoping that they introduce some of the other characters from the comics to the series (mostly Ceaser, Huey's friend who would be a good counterpoint to Huey's various commentaries).

Boondocks is the biggest hit since Robot Chicken. A renewal was inevitable.

I'm not shocked. Every week people were online talking about how it's only a trend carrying on from each week and that the ratings would slowly slide down when people started to see how much the show sucked, but you see what happened.

Not shocked at all, its just as popular as Family Guy with the guys in my hall. It will probably keep getting more popular, too.

Well, the show is not for everybody, and I don't mean kids and adults.

If this is a success, would we see "Doonesbury" on TV? (it was already animated in an Oscar nominated short from 1970s, however). Maybe Adult Swim will greenlit "Prickly City"...naw!

The show isn't too bad, although, like I said, it's not for everybody.

Hard to tell really, since we don't know if AS will take a break when they start playing the last 5 eps of the season (which are suppose to start Febuary 5th). If they don't then the Season will end March 5th. But I don't know when it will end if they do take breaks

Wait, somebody actually thought the show would get cancelled? LOL. Well I don't mind that personally, I liked mostly every episode they had. The only two I weren't fond of were the recent episode and the on with X-Zibit (it could have been much worse, but was a snooze fest overall IMO.)

Excellent. I personally love the show, but i can see why a lot of people don't. It's quite different from what we're used to at Adult Swim, a lot less absurd and has a message to it (not that sealab and smc didn't, of course).

Yes. Many did. Here's one old quote I remember.

Remember that most shows tend to make massive dropoffs in ratings after the first episode. Remember Bob Patterson on ABC? That got so much hype, and after the first episode we realized that it was crap. Now I see nothing wrong with the Boondocks, and I do think the show was somewhat similar to the strip (though not as close to it as Dilbert was), but I highly doubt you'll see ratings like that again.

Everyone in college is saying the "I'm Mad" gag from Grandad's Fight. So yeah if it caught on, most likely it wasn't going to be canned.
