From today's PRnewswire:
(the interview they mention here is supposed to be in a video - which wasn't there yet as I write this post...)

NASCAR DRIVERS AND LOONEY TUNES CREW TEAM UP

BACKGROUND:

Chevrolet, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Action Performance Companies will announce a partnership this June 7th for the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 NASCAR Winston Cup race.

At a gala event at Lowe's Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina, some of America's favorite cartoon characters will move into the NASCAR fast lane when Chevrolet Monte Carlo drivers team up with an animated Warner Bros. Looney Tunes crew for the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 with the Looney Tunes.

Team Monte Carlo veteran Taz has recruited Looney Tunes pals like Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote to match up with some of the best NASCAR drivers including Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick.

Seven Monte Carlo drivers will team with their respective Looney Tunes alter egos, and walk side-by-side down the red carpet to unveil their stunning new race cars. Each car will have a unique design that captures the spirit of both driver and classic cartoon character through bold paint schemes.

INTERVIEW INCLUDES:

NASCAR Drivers; Jeff Gordon, Mike Skinner, Bobby Hamilton, Steve Park, Kevin Harvick, Terry Labonte and Jeff Green

Here's a little more info...
from here (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/010607/0221.html)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sept. 8, 2001, during the Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 with the Looney Tunes at Richmond International Raceway, several Team Monte Carlo drivers from Richard Childress Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Andy Petree Racing will shed their typical paint schemes for race cars featuring that ``wascally wabbit'' Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Yosemite Sam, Elmer Fudd, the Tasmanian Devil and many more zany cartoon favorites.

``One thing always has been true about racing -- it is a sport that families enjoy together,'' said Fred Wagenhals, Action's chairman, president and chief executive officer. ``There is no better way to showcase the family institution than bringing a true slice of Americana -- the Looney Tunes -- to the racetrack.

``No matter if you are two or 92, the Looney Tunes can make everyone feel a little bit like a kid again. This simply is a wonderful, fun program, and I am glad Action Performance is part of it.''

The drivers slated to be part of this special Chevrolet Monte Carlo 400 with the Looney Tunes racing event include:

Driver----- Car No. ---- Primary Sponsor--- Looney Tunes Character(s)

Steve Park---- 1 --- Pennzoil --- Sylvester & Tweety
Terry Labonte---- 5--- KELLOGG'SŪ--- Wile E. Coyote & Road Runner

Kevin Harvick---- 29--- GM Goodwrench Service Plus--- Tasmanian Devil
Jeff Green ---- 30--- AOL--- Daffy Duck
Mike Skinner---- 31--- Lowe's--- Yosemite Sam

The Looney Tunes characters themselves will be on hand before the race greeting fans, while many of the day's festivities also will center on children and families. Additionally, a special event car displaying the Looney Tunes characters will be created for the event.

Action Performance has been licensed by Warner Bros. to create a complete line of collectible merchandise to commemorate this special family event. Action's exclusive collectible replicas of the Looney Tunes limited edition die-cast cars and related racing-inspired apparel will be available through the company's standard distribution channels, trackside and online at www.goracing.com.

When one if it's characters hits the wall at 150 mph?

For a group not wanting to expose kids to violence, this was a *REALLY, REALLY, SMART* move...

I find it strange that Speedy Gonzales was not included. I mean, politically correct or not, he IS fast. And no Porky Pig or Foghorn Leghorn, either.

Sounds like a something Wile E or Sylvester has done many times already... ;)

Actually, as far as the racetracks go, this is relatively low risk because Richmond is a slow track. In fact I think the track qualifying record there is under 130 mph. It's also a shorter race than most (400 miles instead of 500).

FWIW, they've had Taz on on Monte Carlo during NASCAR races several times already. Also Scooby Doo, Dexter and the PowerPuff Girls...

By the way, I think the idea of Looney Tunes on race cars is pretty cool, though, I too would have expected Speedy. I wouldn't mind having a picture of Daffy, Daffy's car, and I...

Now for today's trivia challenge:

'For What It's Worth' was a 60's song

*THIS IS, AS USUAL, A *CLOSED* BOOK TEST*

Who did it, and what was the group later named?

Dave

Somethin' happenin' here...

OK, they have pictures online of the cars - just pick this link and select the character to see the car (http://www.goracing.com/)

Aw heck, I'll try to show one example...
http://www.goracing.com/superstore/Images/Looney_Tunes/5_Main.jpg

And of course, they are selling replicas of these at
NASCAR's store (http://store.nascar.com/servlet/NascarCatalogServlet?catalogType=category&catalogId=2768)

"For a group not wanting to expose kids to violence, this was a *REALLY, REALLY, SMART* move..."
Im offended by that comment.....as most of the WF ppl know.....Im a racing nut.....and I want to do that for a living.......I know that is partially a joke but I dont think NASCAR is violant. And I also dotn get why ppl say the drivers are tryign to kill themselves. Far Far from the truth. Most of teh drivers are family men anyway.....

Actually, it's 400 laps around a 3/4 mile track.
Just 300 miles. The qualifying record for this
track is 126.5 MPH, but the average speed over a
typical race is under 100.

The Flash
06-08-2001, 11:02 PM
Its under 100 because of cautions flags. :)

Seems like we've all forgotten that wonderful commercial for the Chevy Monte Carlo in which Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dale Earnhardt and Taz are riding in Dale's #3 car. It started with Dale Jr. driving the car and giving Taz instructions, but Dale Sr. was being a backseat driver much to the dismay of his son. Then Dale Sr. gets behind the wheel and shows Taz and Dale Jr. how it's really done. And nobody did it like Dale Earnhardt.

Sadly they had to pull that spot off the air after Dale Sr.'s tragic death at Daytona.

This is the biggest cartoon-related stunt since the old Wacky Racing program which Turner never quite got off the ground (sabotaged by an ever changing parade of drivers, the most talented of which was Jerry Nadeau).

The Flash

That was one of the funniest commercials ever! I'm glad I got it on tape too.......I think they should keep showing it. But I dout that they will do that.

I, too, would love to get some of those Looney Tunes NASCAR replicas. I'll have to visit the goracing.com site to see how much they are. Anyone know if you can get these in retail stores?
By the way, happyheathen, the song was long before my time, but the answer to your trivia question on "For What It's Worth" is Buffalo Springfield. ("You better stop -- hey, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down.") If I'm not mistaken, Stephen Stills was the lead singer, so are you implying that the group became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young?

Yep -

Steven Stills and David Crosby from Buffalo Springfield re-grouped with Graham Nash to form CS&N - Neil Young joined later.

Now for part II:

what was a 'Buffalo Springfield'?

The Flash

DougC......those die cast cars are generally really expensive...and you would have to get them in special stores. (ie: you cant walk into wal*mart and get them) But that is if you want the ACTION ones......I have a good feeling winner's circle will make them. And if so you could get them in Wal*Mart or Target. (or where ever) I hope all of that made sense. lol :D

Dave,
I didn't know what a Buffalo Springfield was until I looked it up, and since that's semi-cheating, I'll leave it to someone else to answer. However, one thing I DO know is that Stills and YOUNG [not Crosby] were with Buffalo Springfield. Crosby was originally with the Byrds, and of course Graham Nash with the Hollies.

As I said, anyone who remembers the 60's wasn't really there...

p.s. - 'Yellow Submarine' (as I semi-remember) captured the visual effects of acid rather nicely...

That's okay- Crosby himself probably thinks he was with Buffalo Springfield too! :)

[by the way, since no one else answered...a Buffalo Springfield is a steamroller!]

Since this has gotten way off-topic, I thought I'd bring it back using the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game [connect Buffalo Springfield to Warner Brothers Cartoons in six steps or less]:

1. Stephen Stills was a member of Buffalo Springfield.

2. Stephen Stills' solo band [and the Stills/Young Band] included drummer Joe Vitale.

3. Joe Vitale was also the long-time drummer for guitarist Joe Walsh.

4. Another drummer for Joe Walsh was Ricky Fataar, who in the '70's was a full-time member of the Beach Boys.

5. The Beach Boys' producer was Terry Melcher, who is the son of Doris Day.

and, finally....

6. Doris Day appeared in "My Dream is Yours", a 1949 movie which features a sequence of Warner Brothers animation!

There! We're now back on topic!

[Of course, I could have just said that the type of steamroller that ran over Wile E. Coyote was a Buffalo Springfield!!]

I don't get that quote, but I do, sort of. My parents most definately remember the 60s, and I'm pretty sure they were there, and my oldest brother would most likely recall the late 60s, I'd have to ask him, but he's coming to vist soon, so I'll get back to you on that. I don't know if my sister would remember any of it though.

I'm starting to wonder about you... Also, does that mean they should show it at DARE meetings? "This is your mind on acid!, now lets pretend this chalkboard eraser is a bong..."

the expression 'anyone who remembers thr 60's wasn't really there' refers to the fact that those who actively participated in the sub-culture (sex, drugs, rock&roll, revolutionary politics) is going to have a mind that is less precise in memory function than those who 'sat out' the period

If they did show it, I'd bet attendance would be WAY up :D

I know (took an educated guess), I was just being silly... If I had taken it literally, then I would wonder why I didn't remember the 60s, I mean, I wasn't really there, so technically, I would remember it, even though I wasn't born yet, unless people really do get reincarnated, or if aliens took me away when I was a baby, froze me so I wouldn't age, and dropped me back on earth later, or if the speed which they were traveling caused time to pass, but not for me, like in that movie, only I think I would remember something if all that happened, but then that would mean I wasn't there, explaining my reasoning for not remembering anything, or at least my parents would remember, but they hadn't met yet so I guess none of that could have happened... Yeah, that works...

Anyway, that animation from "My Dream Is Yours" came from the Freleng unit, he most likely handed the project due to his seniority, and experience with live action and animation combined (as in "You Ought To Be In Pictures"). It's a really fun segment, and cute too. I like it more than the one made for "Two Guys In Texas."

It was a make of industrial vehicle used to dig holes, i.e. for laying cable or for graves. One of the bandmembers was trying to figure out what to call the new band ,and he chanced upon the inscription on the side of one of these trucks. Feel lucky that it wasn't a John Deere or a Peterbilt. ;D Vehicles also got the band together in the first place--they met during a traffic jam on a hot California day in early summer of 1966.
