Actually,The other release appears to be the Tick (see Adam Tyner's post in the DVD discussion Forum).

Unorthodox Combination, if you ask me.

Well, they're both parodies of the superhero genre. Not too unorthodox.

Yeah, I know - otherwise a lot of episodes, especially Negaduck ones, would only be like 10 minutes long. :p

Come on, Disney - have some faith and get dangerous with the censors when churning out this DVD. I'm pumped. :)

-Tim

PS - Why is "The Tick" being mentioned as a Disney show in that article? I don't think Disney had anything to do with that.

I have a bootleg set of DW episodes from Toon Disney. There arent as many edits as one would think, but there are enough to be frustrating. Actually, I don't think the Negaduck episodes are edited and if they are, I don't remember. "Inherit the Wimp" is edited, and badly. "Calm a Cameleon" is edited as well. Chopped out of "Inside Binky's Brain" is a scene of Binky electrocuting herself on some wires. But for the most part the editing is really inconsistant. A gunplay sequence from "Film Flam" that's perfectly fine is left alone, while a similar sequence from "Inherit the Wimp" is gone completely.

And then there's "Hot Spells", which is banned completely from Toon Disney.

I know. They didn't. I think it's because, like the Spiderman/Venom release, they somehow got rights to distribute it for DVD.

Wow, January is nearly over and already I've seen three DVDs that I want that will probably get 2006 releases: Dr. Katz, Whose Line, and now this. Fantastic. And I'm glad that it sounds like Disney is releasing the show in sets like DuckTales and Chip N Dale, not the 3-episode best-ofs like Goof Troop. (Although admittedly, Darkwing probably has a larger fanbase than Goof Troop...)

I am very glad to hear about Darkwing Duck is coming out on dvd. Never thought that I would be able to own the series when I first started buying them years ago...but here we are. Anyway, the edits I noticed when I started to rewatch the show again two years ago (before Toon Disney took it off) were two episodes with the Time Top.

The first one is the Dark Warrior one, as there was a scene that got cut with him pointing a gun at Gosalyn. And the other one is the episode with all of Darkwing's anestors showing up to battle Megavolt. The edit I notice in that episode is the backstory for the Western hero, who most of his segment is cut, showing him making a gun out of a wood...and it ends.

Thats it. It's all about the fan base. Which explains why Goof Troop and Quack Pack are ending up with more flimsy releases compared to Ducktakes, Rescue Rangers and hopefully Darkwing Duck.

I would love to see more in the way of special features for Darkwing Duck. I really dont think Disney has any idea how well loved these shows actually were.

Yeah that second edit was the one I was talking about earlier. I forgot about that edit from "Time and Punishment" until you pointed it out. Like I said before, it's funny how inconsistant the editing was on Toon Disney. Lot's characters threatened Gosalyn with weapons, and both Gosalyn and Honker both used guns in several episodes. But THIS scene gets edited. I'm assuming we'll get the 27 episode deal that we got with Ducktales and Rescue Rangers. But where and how will the first season Saturday morning episodes fit in?

You see? Disney knows the "Disney Afternoon" block on DVD is profitable.

I fear, however, that like the Rescue Rangers/DuckTales DVD sets, these shows that deserve extras will get absolutely none.

It's pretty common knowledge that the RR DVDs were edited and there's a strong fear the same thing is going to happen with DW as well.

I'm happy to see that Darkwing Duck is coming to DVD; however, I'm not with the show that paired it up with. The Tick? Come on, that's not even a Disney show! The most logical show to pair DD with would be TaleSpin.

Yes, I'm Also Curious About These Edits, since John has quoted DarthGonzo on the usbject on DVDToons, UltimateDisney, and i think HomeTheaterforum, but despite the "Common knowledge" i've yet to find anything to suggest edits (No one except John and DarthGonzo have mentioned it on any Message bhoard or Internet Venue). I just want to know if these Sets are, indeed edited, because misinformation from friends-of-friends can spead across the internet pretty quickly.

Also, I'm curious as to how Disney is going to handle The Tick" since it only had a 36-episode run? Would they better off offering the complete series on a 4-disc set, 2 18-epsisode 2-disc sets, or another release type?

I'm not 100% positive about Ducktales but I'm sure there were a few Rescue Rangers episodes that were edited. There was at least one episodes in which the Rangers were running towards Fat Cat and his gang and suddenly we cut to everyone laying on the floor. Now something was missing. The problem is that I'm not familiar enough with Rescue Rangers to tell what was gone. On top of that the opening theme songs were Disney Channel alternations with music and footage remixes. These episodes are edited, no doubt about it.

Okay I just wanted to make sure, because i was concerned that you and John are the only people to have made note of this on any forum, and no one else has made mention of possible edits. This is especially important as edits like the ones you descirbed usually create abnormal jump cuts and fade outs (and possibly cuts in the soundtrack) and remove punchlines or action, which would be noticed by someone perceptive on such matters such as someone reviewing the DVD's or a DVD Forum goer (no one like this has confrimed anything one way or the other). Considering how quickly the Ren and Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead edits were discovered, I assumed that the knowledge of possible Rescue Rangers edits would be a little more widespread.

I don't own either set, but i'm assuming you own the RR set (otherwise you wouldn't be "Sure"), can you give a list of afflicted episodes.

Also, i inquired about the edtis on Ultimate Disney (where John lasted posted the information), hoping to get some answers. If i find anything out, i'll let you guys know.

Great news! I'm glad both series are coming to DVD--I just hope they get a bit better treatment than the C+D RR set did and contain all the episodes in order instead of the pilot movie being totally dropped.

The only thing that worries me is that it's taken this long to get the Disney Afternoon shows. How long am I going to have to wait for Talespin, and is it going to be edited to hell and back? If so, Kit's going to be a boring character.

The history of censorship regarding Beavis & Butt-head and Ren & Stimpy is better documented than the Disney shows. They have more adult fans as well, who notice this sort of stuff. Most people nowadays only seem to have vague recollections of the older Disney programs, so most don't notice the edits. But, at least with the RR set, some episodes ARE edited. There are more episodes of Darkwing that have been edited than any other Disney series I think, and that scares me about DW being released on DVD.

There's the problem with me and Rescue Rangers. Like I've said before, I'm not familiar enough with the series to even remember the episode titles. In fact there are about 6 episodes of RR I havent even watched yet. I can watch Ducktales for hours, Rescue Rangers doesnt hold up to marathon viewings. Plus, the visuals downgrade badly after the first dozen or so episodes. Ducktales and Darkwing Duck always had interesting things to look at. Rescue Rangers, aside from the TMS and the rare WDTA-Japan, were usually pretty bland.

Thats why I loved Darkwing Duck. Even the Sunwoo, Wang and Kennedy episodes always had some cool eye candy. I'd like to shake the hands of whoever came up with some of the idea and characters on that show. The gas gun, Thunderquack, Megavolt, Negaduck, Quackerjack, the Ratcatcher...so much visual stimuli.

I think this really needs to be pointed out once and for all. Nothing was dropped from the Ducktales and Rescue Rangers sets. The episodes are included in production order and not airdate order. On top of that, "Treasure of the Golden Suns" and "To the Rescue" first aired in edited movie form and only aired as individual episodes later in the runs of each show.

Take a look at this list I put together of the Darkwing Duck episodes...arranged by production order...

***While I appreciate the info, I was simply going on what I had seen/read around the various newsgroups and that was the first five episodes of C+D RR were not in the first box set. It never ocurred to me they would release a box set without the orgin story otherwise the target audience is hindered from the get-go, production schedual format or not

I think that they should spilt the episodes into 3 volumes, the first should center on Darkwing's more Superhero adventures, and chroincal is beginings and his first encounters with both his allies and his most fiendish foes, begining with Darkly Dawns the Ducj and the last episode of the set should be Just Us Justice Ducks, the second set should center on Darkwing's adventures as an agent of SHUSH and his battles angainst FOWL and the last one should center on DW's more out there adventures, the supernatraul, and more fantasy based stories, like when Darkwing and Megavolt get sent into the "real world". Ok folks, lets do what we can to get these episodes unedited. I happen to know that the first ducktales ep featuring Fenton is edited because scrooge takes a gun off the wall and shoots at him and i dont want these crazy edits in my dvd sets or else they really arnt worth buying. Disney really has a way of packaging the most minimal cheap content they can and selling it at the highest price under the Disney brand. It is possibly they don't even know that they are putting edited versions on these dvd sets. lets start a letter writting campaign and lets start one now! Fonebone are you with me?????

If your with me please help find the best contact info and address to send any letters too. Walt Disney needs to know how much the die hard fans care about the Disney Afternoon! TVshowsonDVD.com has been able to hold some influence in decisions like this. I think if we want to be heard, we have to mention this to the guys there. Remember that they got Justice League vol. 2 in widescreen from the fan demands that they collected. If enough of us write to the site demanding that Darkwing be uncut, they know where to pass it on.
