Oops! I didn't even notice!
I'd automatically assumed it was Disney with Brer Rabbit's link to "Song of the South".
Not that that changes my expectations or anything...

Not your fault; Universal is trying to milk the Disney audience.
I think.

Perhaps Brer Rabbit is public domain, like Cinderella, Aladdin, or Pocahontas. Unless Disney actually trademarked the name, any other company can do what they want with the character, although I'm sure Disney's design is their own trademark.

Uncle Remus stories are in public domain. Bakshi made one during the 70s or so.

Yeah, this must be in the public domain. Maybe this will get Disney to release their Song of the South on DVD sometime soon. I really wanna see that movie - with no edits, just so they keep the historical relevance of the work, too.

Doubtful. Some silly DVD release from Universal isn't going to change Disney's mind like that.

OK, fine. Has anybody watched it? I saw it in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart. Is it worth a watch for $5????

For five bucks, I certainly think so. I managed to see some of it a while back, and was pretty entertained. It also managed to keep the spirit of the original stories, especially in the bits with Sister Moon. The voice acting fits the characters very, very, well. Though, I still wish they'd gone a different route with their character designs.

I do belive the Brer Rabbit stories are in public domain since I remember having a book of folk/fairy tales having that story in it, complete with the fox, bear, and tar baby.

Guys, the Br'er rabbit stories are folk tales that originated with the Black community of the American South. They were being told long before anyone wrote them down and paired them with the character of Uncle Remus.
You really can't get more public domain than a folktale. :p ;)
