I saw a lot of movies this summer but I didn't make it to the theater much this fall...

So I'd say my favorite was probably The Fast & The Furious (but it's close, I liked just about everything I saw this summer).

The worst movie I saw was easily Scary Movie 2. Parts of it were funny, but a lot of it just got too disgusting to be entertaining. I sat there wishing I could have had my seven bucks back.

Best Movie:

A tie between Lord of the Rings and Memento. Those were two well constructed movies which kept me on the edge of my seat. It also made me want to see them again...which signifies a GREAT movie.

Worst Movie:

Freddy Got Fingered. There is no other movie worse then this smoldering, disgusting waste of celluloid. This movie showcased everything wrong with today's movie industry. EVERYTHING.

Those are my 2001 picks!

Best movie:

Glitter . :D

Naw, I'm joking, but the real best movie I've seen this year is Lord of the Rings . It was just done so well, the best version of the book by far.

Worse Movie:

Harry Potter , I'm sorry but this movie did nothing for me at all. I've read some of the books and when I went and saw the movie, it pretty much sucked. It was like someone just took out the books best parts and put them on screen, which really didn't for me since some of the things I liked were cut out. The acting was pretty below normal too.

Oh well, that's just me.

Jedi Knight

Best Movie:
This is actually a tie between 2 movies (so far): Memento and A Beautiful Mind.

Both were just incredible movies. I could easily see A Beautiful Mind cleaning up at the Globes/Oscars. A close 3rd behind these 2 is Lord of the Rings, but I don't think it was as good as the hype made it out to be. And speaking of hype...

Worst Movie:
I know many won't approve, but I think Shrek was the worst movie of the year. Plainly put, it just wasn't funny. I understood the jokes and the references they were making, but I guess I'm just more of a slapstick guy (I loved Rush Hour 2).

Best Flick: Lord of the Rings

Worst Flick: I don't see many movies, so I can't really speak firsthand, but I'm going to make the predictable guess that the worst movie was Glitter.

Best movie:
Monsters, Inc.
Lord of the Rings

Worst:
The Musketeers

From what my friends say, they saw Vanilla Sky and that was just awful. I haven't seen it so I can't agree or disagree with them. All I know is that I don't like Tom Cruise. :p

Best films of the year: Shrek, Joe Dirt, Planet of the Apes, Shallow Hal, Final Fantasy, and Saving Silverman,...

The Middle of the Road votes go to Tomb Raider and LOTR- they both had there moments, but LOTR should have ended on a bit of a cliffhanger IMHO...

The worst of the year- Glitter. Didn't see it, didn't have to. Mariah + acting= disaster waiting to happen. I mean, have you seen her videos?!

Best movies: LOTR & Ocean's 11
Worst movie: I saw Scary Movie 2 on DVD this past week, I'm not sure if it came out in 2001, but eiher way it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Worst - The Glass House... why oh why did I see that trash?

Best - I have no idea...

Best:

A three-way tie between "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", "Atlantis" and "Not Another Teen Movie".

Pleasant Surprises:

Shrek
Monsters, Inc.
Osmosis Jones (the animated sequences only)
Rat Race
Domestic Disturbance
Cats & Dogs
Bones

Good, but could've been better:

Tomb Raider
The Mummy Returns
Planet of the Apes (the most un-Tim Burtonlike film Tim Burton ever made)

Just plain awful (i.e. the worst of the worst):

Freddy Got Fingered
Valentine
Scary Movie 2
Osmosis Jones (the live-action sequences)
Tomcats
Say it isn't So
See Spot Run
One Night at McCool's
The Wedding Planner
Corky Romano
Out Cold

Note: I've not yet laid eyes on many of these wastes of film, but the reviews don't lie.

Hey, 2002 aint shapin' up to be much better. Scary Movie 3 is actually being made and in a few days a Scary Movie-ish parody of martial arts movies is going to be released (i forgot the title). ET is being rereleased, but it's gonna be digitial changed to remove stuff like guns and whatnot. Star Wars Episode 2 is coming out in May, and I've lost all enthusiasm for the franchise. And what is this Disney Snow Dogs piece of crap thats trying to rip-off Cats and Dogs? Peeeeee-uw!!!!

"Snow Dogs" is based on a Gary Paulsen novel (which I assume was a serious drama), but the trailers make it look like an early candidate for worst movie of 2002. I bet you fifty bucks that the scene from the previews where the dogs are on a beach comes at the end of the film. The cast (which includes no fewer than two Oscar winners) must not have realized that there are better ways to pick up a paycheck. I didn't think that Disney could make a live-action film that was worse than "Blank Check" (1994), but... Another festering cow-pie from the director of "Jingle All the Way".

WHat's ST:X?

And that martial arts parody is Kung-Pow! and it does look really ridiculous -- an dno doubt it'll do good business for some reason. Parodies are still a good business. Teen Movie grossed a very respectable $30 million so far, great for such a low budget movie. Scary Movie 3 will undoubtly be the worst movie of 2002.

Oh - that's why I didn't recognize it. I despise Star Trek and have no interest whatsoever in every seeing a movie. I just don't enjoy the shows. Hmmm...looks like 2002 may not be the excellent year it's being touted as being...

Anyways - back to 2001...

I really doubt that. It sounds really good to me. Maybe not on the level of Trek's very best, but I don't think it'll be far below.

I remember you saying that in the past. Any reason why? If that's based on Voyager and Enterprise, that's certainly understandable. But other series and most of the movies have been very good. Are you Star Wars fan?

I didn't reall ylike the original Star Trek series. It just never clicked me. Same with The Next Generation. I gave it one last shot with Deep Space Nine but was dissapointed. Voyager, I thought was laughable at best. I have watched a few episodes of ENterprise an dit's not that bad, actually. I've just neevr been a huge fan of that Sci-Fi genre.

Star Wars is good though. I like those movies.

Worst: "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The Dragon must have represented the plot, 'cause I couldn't follow the story at all....

Best: Monsters Inc. Extremely funny and has gags for all ages.

I suppose you lean more toward space opera than science-fiction, then?

Well, same with me. Though I did enjoy Next Generation in spurts.

I don't have a problem with any of the things you've mentioned in the spoiler space. They're good ideas that can work. The issue is how they're going to be used. If the script is bad, then the movies going to suffer. Have you read detailed spoilers of the movie? If you have, then you probably do have a better sense of whether it'll be good or not. I'm familiar with the plot points you've mentioned, but I haven't read any of the scripts or treatments that have been posted on the various sites, so I don't know exactly how the story's going to be played out. It just seems to me that the writer (or is he the director, can't remember the guy's name) seems very excited about the project and seems to be a fan, which should be good for the movie. And the plot point I've heard seem to indicate a movie that's a little bigger in scope than the typical trek movie and with a story that's going to effect the quadrant as a while

I know the creative team. The plot point of Kirk meats Picard looks good on paper...twas utter crud when actually done.

None of the tng movies has been great, FC was good, the other were BAD.
ST:X is gonna be the final nail in the Star Trek Movie coffin.

This was the year I tried to get back into the contemporary movie scene, and wound up running screaming from the theater.

The only movies I can remember really liking were "A.I.," "The Man Who Wasn't There" and "Ocean's 11." Easily the worst (IMO) was "The Lord of the Rings" with "The Mummy Returns" and "Pearl Harbor" close behind.

James Harvey

Didn't like Lord of the Rings? Why? This year was overlal dissapointing becuase I just thought it'd be much better than the trainwreck that was 2000. Unfortunatly there were just as many bad movies last year as there was in 2000. I'm really hoping 2002 will pull us out of this rut.

There was so much utter crap that came out in 2001 that it's hard to remember what was good or bad, but here goes:

BEST OF 2001:

A.I.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
American Pie 2
Shrek
Ali
Serendipity
Lord Of The Rings

WORST OF 2001:

Glitter
The Mummy Returns
Jeepers Creepers
Moulan Rouge

WORST OF THE WORST OF 2001:

(tie): Glitter and The Mummy Returns. These movies should have never been made. No good came from them.

Jackie Chan's next film
Jet Li's next film if it comes out this year
That Jar Jar Binks dies it the first scene of Episode II

I'd have to say Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back or LOTR would be my favorites. Some other good movies were Rush Hour 2, Ali, Along Came a Spider, Hannibal, and others...

But for worst...DEFINITELY Scary Movie 2! I've never seen a movie that was so stupid. The first one was pretty funny...but the second just sucked IMO.

hmm everyone seems to pick American movies... let's go abroad shall we? :)

'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain' ('Amelie') was one of the best movies I had ever seen. I also really liked 'Lord of the Rings' and ... 'Memento'. Good pick James, this was one hell of a movie!

Worst movies: 'Tomb Raider' for instance... but I'm sure there were any others.

Though there are some I haven't seen which could be really great -or bad- as well (like 'Ocean's eleven', 'Ali'...)

I havent seen much since Ive gone to college in August, but I still have a couple of choices for best picture.

Memento: Damn this movie be bad azz. I meen this was more off the heezy than fa sheezy could ever describe. Guy Pierce brings it hard once again, his true follow up to LA Confidential.

A Beautiful Mind: Russell Crowe needed this one to make me forget the travesty of his Best Actor win for Gladiator. And he did earn it. This and his performance in The Insider make me feel a lot better about that hurtful moment.

Worst?

Tomcats. Good Lord. Never seen a comedy fail so badly.

Mummy Returns: Only the one British dude saved this movie from the depths of total cinema garbage. I mean come on, Im supposed to believe Brendan Fraser can outrun light? I dont think so. According to sources, Fraser would have had to be running 24,000+mph to outrun the light and save that one annoying little British kid. I would have rather seen one less British lad running around.

Spider-Man

Wow! I really like how this board is so braod in topic. This year wasn't too bad for movies. There were alot of clunkers, but also some good ones. The afore-mentioned Memento was really well done. I'd buy the DVD but it's really bare-bones, and I can tell this is a cult film that will garner a special edition release. Worst film is a tie between Tomcats (for wasting Horatio Sanz talent and sucking) and Freddy Got Fingered (for wasting Tom Green's talent and feeding his ego). next year looks to be good, although another sequel driven year.

Here's my list:

Best (in order):

Harry Potter (This movie was adapted perfecly from the novel, and I coulden't have picked better actors to play their respective characters. Overall, this was just a stunning movie)
Jurassic Park 3 (This film did have a pretty lame story, but the action and special effects was great, and the dinosaurs were cool :))
Monsters, Inc.
The Mummy Returns

Worst:

Dunno. All the other movies I saw I found medicore. Nothing was really horrible.

For 2002, I think Spider-Man, SW Episode 2, and The Power Puff Girls (Yep, I'm a fan of those 3 adorable butt kicking girls) should all be good. I know Harry Potter 2 will be excellent. As for the worst, I think The Scorpion King (even though I want to see it) will sadly suck. There are a few other movies I think will be bad, but their titles escape me at the moment. I think 2002 will overall be a good movie year. At least, I hope it will!

See ya!

Best:
Monster's Inc.: I thought the story was cute and the jokes were good. There were a lot of adults and kids laughing in the movie theater.
A.I.: I thought that the story was very moving and dealt w/ philosophical ?'s in an interesting way. I like that bear!

Worst:
Moulin Rouge: After the 1st 10 min. of the movie I felt like I needed to barf because of that stupid swirling camera angle thing! And throughout the whole entire movie, they kept on repeating the same songs over and over again! And the the love story was so shallow! We didn't even get to see the relationship develop! In fact, the whole entire movie was just a lot of color and glitter!

Tom Green and Horatio Sanz have talent? Since WHEN???

Oh and for those of you who put Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as their worst movies of the year list, you might as well take the cyanide pills now because that plot was simple enough for a CHILD to decipher. If reading subtitles is the only thing that halted your understanding of the story, you really need to work on multitasking. Rent the DVD or something and see it dubbed. Maybe that will help your feeble minds.

Oh and CTHD was a 2000 film. So it doesnt count. :P

Remember the Titans was a 2000 release, it came out in September of, I think. That was a pretty good movie I'll admit. With 17 sequels coming out this year, I'm beginning to wonder if we'll have a better year than 2001.
