We've had this kind of thread a bunch of times for other cartoon studios, so here's the poll for the Terrytoons Studio. So who do you like the best?

I voted for Heckle and Jeckle, they're simply the best out of the Terrytoons lot. I also enjoy Mighty Mouse, Gandy Goose & Sourpuss, and Little Roquefort (BTW, I recently acquired five of his rarely seen shorts).

Also, I misspelled Jeckle, could one of the moderators fix it?

It's a tie here! Heckle & Jeckle and Gandy & Sourpuss.

(Mighty Mouse takes a close No. 2 1/2, if only because, IMHO, he was/is at his total best only with Oil Can Harry as the villain of the hour. That includes Harry's only post-Terrytoons appearance worth noting, in the 1988(?) Ralph Bakshi TV short, "Still Oily After All These Years"!)

What about the Mighty Heroes? I think these were Terrytoons shorts, because I last saw them on Mighty Mouse shows. Was Quackula a Terrytoons character, or did Filmation create him for their "New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle" show? I think he was in a Heckle and Jeckle short, but this may have been one of Filmation's also.

The answers to your questions are: Sort of, and no.

"The Mighty Heroes" were done by the original Terrytoons studio, but under the direction of CBS' Satruday morning cartoon uber-boss Fred Silverman, who wanted to cash in on the mid-1960s superhero craze. Since CBS owned Terrytoons, Fred had Ralph Bakshi develop the charaters, but they were only shown on U.S. TV, and never in theaters.

Quackula, meanwhile was a Filmation creation, though there may have been a hand or two in the mix from CBS' headquarters.

I bought some rare 16mm toons from a former projectionist last year, and he had vivid recollections of the Mighty Heroes toons, which I quote here...

"There were indeed 35mm prints of The Mighty Heroes, because I saw them regularly at the theatre when I was a youngster. And you are right, I do remember seeing them on TV first... I remember thinking it odd to see a TV cartoon on the big screen!"

Alas I was denied such an experience in the theater... sob, sob ;)

As for the poll... gotta be Heckle & Jeckle. Mighty Mouse second. But where's Kiko the Kangaroo, the first cartoon series directed by George Gordon, with animation by Joe Barbera...

Tim --

I know Terrytoons did show their made-for-TV stuff from the 60s theatrically in foreign markets, but it is news to me that "The Mighty Heroes" actually did make it into U.S. theaters or drive-ins following their one-year run on CBS.

As far as the quality goes, they were about at the same level as the last of the Terrytoons theatricals, so showing those instead of James Hound, Sad Cat or Possible Possum wouldn't have been a major downgrade for whatever theater that ran the films (in this case via 20th Century Fox, instead of CBS)

"Heckle And Jeckle" are my favorite Terrytoon characters of all time with Mighty Mouse second and Gandy Goose & Sourpuss third.

BTW: The Mighty Heroes first was on tv, then 20th Century Fox released several of the cartoons to theaters in the late sixites, just like they did with the Deputy Dawg shorts years earlier.
