A NEW TOM & JERRY

http://www.cartoonbrew.com/archives/karateguard.jpgI highly recommend you catch the world premiere of Joe Barbera's latest Tom & Jerry cartoon, 9pm Friday January 27th on Cartoon Network. Barbera is credited with direction and for the story, and Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone were supervising producers.

Thank you for letting us know. I certainly will check it out, if I can remember the date and time.

That is fantastic news. Maybe if it's good it'll be a series. CN has yet to hang T&J out to dry entirely because kids still like it. Maybe it can get a new series that wont be awful and spit on its heritage but still be able to keep kid viewers which sadly was not the case for Duck Dodgers.

I remember the last Tom and Jerry short directed by the guy that directed Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries that featured Joe Barbera as Tom's owner. It was pretty decent, but having him direct a new one is on par with Chuck Jones doing a new Roadrunner/Wile E. Coyote, were he still with us.

This must be Tom & Jerry Tales which will be starting in the UK on Boomerang next month. I have high hopes here.

Btw, that is one badass samurai Spike to hold a giant wooden hammer! And how apt, considering some anime girls that use wooden hammers, even though that cliche has been an old cartoon tradition.

And speaking of anime, will KarateGuard feature parodies of anime and Asian martial arts flicks? Like, we might see chibi-Jerry?

And more of anime, when will ever see Jerry or Tom ride a giant mecha?

We haven't had a believable Tom & Jerry cartoon in nearly fifty years. I betting all my money on this.

Dang... it pays to have Cartoon Network, folks.

Hopefully, they'll still want to air this in a few months/years.

Though, I can't help but wonder what kept Joe from animation for the past few years, as well as why Warner Brothers won't attempt to make new-age HB animations beyond Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry. I guess that's a respect/apathy issue, and I'll leave that at that.

Actually this isn't Tom and Jerry Tales. Its a new theatrical Tom and Jerry cartoon that was released in a theater in LA somewhere.

You know, I never really found even the original Tom and Jerry to be all that funny, so my hopes aren't too high for this.

I know what you mean. I can watch them and marvel at the craft, but the content leaves me a bit cold. And anyway, the basic gag of this "new" toon - a big mean dog is summoned by Jerry via a gong to beat the crap out of Tom - was done at least twice in the original series. To me it's useless to try to bring back classic toons like T & J and Bugs and the gang and IMITATE what has gone before - because the people who created those classics are no longer with us for the most part and the new animators haven't the skill, experience or comic sense to pull off any sort of comeback.

I'm insanely skeptical of it, but it'd be nice to see a genuine revival. If I can get a tape in for it, I'll make sure to get it.

Its not an imitation,Joe Barbera himself wrote and directed this cartoon and saw to it that the best animators animated it.This is a REAL Tom and Jerry cartoon.

I'm just hoping that Joe Barbera drew the line at Tom and the naughty tentacles.

Good to see him back in the saddle. I thought he made one in the nineties to match Hanna's "Hard Luck Duck" but I can't remember now.

I didn't care much for the last one.
KarateGuard though, it sounds like it has plenty of potential for violence.
Here's hoping they have whimsy enough to pull it off.

"Best animators"? Now there's a comparative statement. There was some damn nice animation in "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" but it still wasn't funny. But we'll see.
