Is it too late to buy the ol' Xbox right now, with the new gen already out?
There are reasons, like the great games you can only play on the ol'XB.

It's not too late at all. People still brought the first PlayStation while the second one was out, so it's fine I think! :anime:

On the contrary! Now would be a good time to buy, what with the price of pre-modded XBOX's low and the amount of great free applications you can download online. There's a great emulation scene for XBOX, so you can play all your old games on a single console.
I was actually thinking of picking one up myself when my next wage-slip comes in.

As soon as it drops in price, I'm planning on picking up a used one... and a 300 gig hard drive, and a subscription to GameFly...
... Um, yeah. Read between the lines. I'm gonna moderate the effigy out of it.

If a 360 is within your realm of affordability, then it's probably best to wait. Most, if not all, of the Xbox library will eventually be compatible with it.
If the low price tag of the original unit is what's interesting you, though, go for it. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if the price dropped again soon as they try to clear out inventory.

Right now is probably a bad time to buy either the original or the 360, unless you really want one. I'd say it's a few months at most before the XBox drops to $99.99, and the 360's only a year away from $299.99 for the HD model.

Defentlly a good idea if you cant afford a 360. Even with the 360 playing a majority of oringal games the oringal one [probally, dont quote me on this] has a bigger game libary. Not to mention the games atm should be plentitful and very cheap.
Not good if you only want to play games as they come out though.

The only Xboxes in circulation currently are the Xbox bundles with Forza motorsport.

i've seen some TRU's with the standard package (no bundle) around my area. I got around 200 dollars in BB gift cards..thought about getting the xbox 180 dollar bundle but then again I have no games for it :| My focus would be games like racers or flight combat games that show off the power of the xbox.

If you plan on modding it, go for it, if not wait till you can get a 360.

I myself just got my first Xbox about 3 months ago. And I just this last weekend noticed the prices were dropping on several of the games for the original Xbox unit, so I went on somewhat of a game spree, snatching up a bunch of games I've been wanting to play for months, yet couldn't afford till now. (I snatched up Jade Empire and Fable: The Lost Chapters. I also picked up Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, which hasn't gone down in price, but I had a gift certificate for the store I bought it at). I'll be playing all of these for a while to come. ;)
So most of the original Xbox games should work on the Xbox 360? Is that correct?

Nope. Go on xbox.com/games and check out the backward compatability. While a bunch do (Barbie Horse Adventure? Read Monday's Penny Arcade), not all the ones do. I've been buying them in case they become playable, or when I get an XBox, but out of my ten games, only Dead Or Alive 3, Star Wars: KOTORm Sega GT, and Fables: The Lost Chapter (which doesn't run perfectly) do. (That leaves Crazy Taxi 3, Dead Or Alive Ultimate, Jet Set Radio Future, Shenmue 2, SNK Vs Capcom, Star Wars Clone Wars/Tetris Worlds, Sudeki, and Tony Hawk 2X don't.
