From Joystiq (http://action.joystiq.com/2006/01/07/magazine-reveals-revolution-details-zelda-super-smash-bros-d/):

While it's not exactly the kind of publication we thought would break all sorts of Revolution news, National Geographic Kids Magazine was invited by the Big N to test out the top-secret Revolution controller in Tokyo. They report, "The Revolution will be available later this year. You'll be able to use it with games you already have as well as with new games. Here are some old favorites and a few of the things you'll be able to do with this revolutionary new controller."

Wow! Let's break that down a bit:

The system will be out this year. You can believe they got this straight from Nintendo and it is consistent with earlier rumors (http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/06/rumor-u-s-revolution-during-thanksgiving-week-2006/). 2006. Done.
Backwards compatibility is of course something we've known about for awhile; however, the "old favorites" mention is so provocatively vague! They list The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Brothers, and Donkey Konga. Question is, are they listing games or franchises? If they are listing games, does this mean the "old favorite" versions of these games (Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Melee) will use the Revolution controller to slash a sword or work as a shield? Nintendo recently said (http://joystiq.com/2006/01/06/nintendo-dismisses-zelda-use-of-rev-controller/) they "made no announcements" regarding such functionality. This of course does not mean there is no such functionality.
If they in fact meant "old favorite" franchises, can we infer there are next-generation versions in the works? Did they get hands-on time using the controller? Are all three games in active production, complete enough to be shown to the press?Either possibility is far more than they've shown in earlier (http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/08/revolution-demoed-in-nyc/) press demos, where they used simple gameplay demos with crude graphics to emphasize the interface. There is, of course, the possibility they were shown those same demos, and were told by Nintendo what they could expect, to snazz up the story a bit more... but why invite them out to Tokyo for just that?

Fine, we admit: Nintendo has us wrapped around their precious little finger, making us feel like awkward teenagers, gaping at a pinup of the Revolution controller in our proverbial high school locker, swooning over every little nugget of news, knees buckling whenever Shiggy or Reggie open their mouths... how much longer can we stand it?

While this news tidbit may seem unimpressive, the pictures are rather interesting...particularly the things written about SSB. Punch while holding the controller and the system will recognize it? Use two controllers as drumsticks for Donkey Konga?

It would definitely appear that Twilight Princess won't be the only GCN game that will have some sort of new way to play it on the Revolution.

In other Revolution news, it seems that the (oft-maligned by competitors) controller has already inspired a copycat (http://culture.joystiq.com/2006/01/06/revolution-controller-inspires-3rd-party-ps2-controller/).

I don't even know how you would play games with that...thing.

That 3rd Party controller looks like a Starship ignition

I bet it sparks just as much too

Christ, I really hope the new Smash Bros game is actually a new one and not just a remake of melee.

And I hope the games in genral arent just updates of older games with the new function built in. While it would be interesting to see how older games could be adapted to the new controller, Id rather spend my £200 (or however much its gonna be) on something else.

I believe it's trying to say that, you can play the old discs with the new control scheme (similar to how the XBox 360 can play XBox games in HD, or the PS2 can play PSone games with a faster drive).

Bah, Donkey Konga

I want new platformer Adventure like DK64. I mean if you just had DK and Diddy(or whoever) that would be sufficant. There would also be toned down collecting, so it would not become tedious.

But DK64 sucked.

They need to make a new game like the DKC triliogy for SNES. Those games were awesome.

I thought they were when I read the topic. It said Donkey Kong, not Donkey Konga.

Meh DK64 sucked due to the constant need to change team members and the collecting

If they made a straight 3D platformer with DK that would be welcome

Play Jungle Beat, because it's probably the closest thing to DKC that Nintendo will ever make. And it doesn't even have any plot or familiar characters aside from DK. :(

Huh. That's exactly why I loved DK64. A lot of characters with different abilities for variety and collecting so you feel a strong sense of accomplishment when you finally find everything.

However, this is interesting. If it means a game series, that's great, because playing Wind Waker on the Rev would be awesome, and so would Smash. But the confirmation of a release date later this year is only going to give me less time to come up with 200+ dollars. Oy.

Didn't Nintendo have copyrights in place so they could sue the pants off anybody who tried?

oh right!, so you dont have to buy new games that already have, the market dosent get oversaturated with last-gen games and old gamecube games will be given another life. Sounds great.... if thats what they meant.

And that 3rd party ps2 revolution controller looks crap beyond belief

It's not the first one like that, there was a earlier 3rd party controller for the PSX shaped exactly like that

it was the freedom controller IIRC

No, see, what happened was, Nintendo has a time machine, and they wen't back to the mid-90s and MADE the first one handed controller, patented it, and held on to it until now, where people are finally "ready" to handle the awesome might of the Revolution controller. Problem with this noble marketing move, is that companies from like 5-10 years ago go off and steal their ideas, and put it out there before Nintendo has a chance to release it themselves. It's things like that that make them HAVE to not tell anyone about any of their plans for next-gen stuff until about a day before release.

They also did the same thing with touch screens on handheld systems (screw Game.com, they ripped off the DS).

Whoever mentioned the DS? The same could be said about multiple companies making controllers with joysticks before Nintendo released N64, but did any of them make that big of a contribution? Yes Game.com was a previous portable with a touch screen, but again, did that actually make an impact on the industry? (Although it did happen to have their fun Lights Out game, I believe.)

Also, do you hate Nintendo and if so what do you have against them? It seems like any post related to Nintendo you go off against them like they're your worst enemy.
