I've recently been able to see Samurai Pizza Cats for the first time in years. I do have one question though, just how different is the dub from the original japanese version (apart from obvious things like name changes, etc) and did the original japanese version have the 4th wall humour that's so common in the dub

From what I've heard, there is a BIG difference. No 4th wall breaking, no celebrity references, no wise-cracking narrator, just a standard action show.

Rumor has it that there was absolutely NO translation whatsoever done for the English adaption, and that the dub was entirely improvised. I haven't seen it myself, but I hear it's surprisingly funny.

No translation at all?, interesting

I seriously doubt the ENTIRE show was improvised. There were certain elements in that show that I thought just couldn't get by with improvisation alone. The producers and dubbers had to at least taken a look a the japanese script to understand what the hell was going on.

To my knowledge, they didn't get Japanese scripts, so Saban had to improvise a good deal, if not all, of the dub. But they must have had some type of minimum knowledge or lucky attention to detail in watching the Japanese raw episodes to have the ability to (1) get big, dramatic moments such as most of the 2-part finale right (or seem as if they are right) AND (2) be able to decide not to air 12 (14, if you count the two never seen outside of Japan) episodes in the U.S., a fourth of the entire series!

Kyatto Ninden Teyandee had a bit of 4th wall humor, but not even close to the same degree as SPC.
There are actually a ton of scenes where the Saban dubbers had no clue what was going on, and that's what makes the show so awesome.
Here's one of my personal favourites:
Son: Everyone knows that cats can't fly. It doesn't make any sense.
Mama: There no need for it to make sense. It's a cartoon.
*A small red thing falls from the sky, onto the ground*
Son: What's that?
Mama: I have no idea.
Grant, I'm actually surpised you didn't ask this on my Pizza Cat forums which you sometimes visit, where we've got like... a heck of a lot more knowledge on the show (http://www.edoropolis.org/forums/index.php?topic=155.0). =P

Oh sorry.
By the way I forgot to point out something, watching this again makes me relise some of the things they got away with in the dub.
1 - I'm not sure Speedy being called a "neo facist feline" in the first episode would go down well today.
2 - Speedy accidently kissing Big Cheese in the 5 episode.....well okay it wasn't that much of a kiss, but they call it that in a later episode (which happened to be a clip show)
3 - All that japanese text in the background scenery. It's a good thing digital paint technology was not around back then, it's one thing doing it in shows like Pokemon, but there's so much Japanese text/kanji in the background of each episode I think digital painters would of a had a field day with this show
