View Full Version : The Q1-Q2 2006 anime topic.

Now that we are a day away from 2006 and we've got a lot more updates on new shows coming, it's time to make another discussion topic for anime airing in the first 2 quarters of 2006. I've been doing this individually, but a compilation topic is needed now that there are so many.

I will only list shows with TV series. OVAs and movies will NOT be included, so don't ask.
The list will be telling about shows airing from January through May. IE: To the end of Spring.

Seven sorcerers known as "Masters" summon a powerful familiar called "Servants" and they all fight each other till the last one. The last one is said to attain the Holy Grail which will grant them a wish. Only a few knows when this War started and what the Holy Grail is, but the war was about to begin again this year.

The main character is Emiya Shirou, who lost his parents in a fire and was adopted by a man who called himself a sorcerer. Admiring his step father, he has been training himself to be a sorcerer. However, he had no talent and he could barely use one type of sorcery. His step father has already passed away, and today he's a sorcerer without any skills or knowledge. He is involved in the War of the Holy Grail when he accidentally summons Saber, who is said to be the strongest servant of all...

Ouch. I'm only looking forward to Bincho-tan (if actually turns up - I've seen art for it in megami for years now with no series, so I'm a little skeptical,) the new Sasami series and XXXHolic (which given CLAMP movies may be very pretty but over condensed.) Well, Fate/Stay as well, but it's a prelicence, so forget it. Maybe Shinichi Watanabe's new show will be worth a laugh, but you never know. Stand up comedy girl might be funny too. However, there seems to be a lack of depth in that lot of series. Or just a lack of something other than fanboy pandering. I really hope Nana does turn up on TV when it's supposed to.

Rakugo-Tennyo sounds like it will be funny due to the fact that the creator has a very good background. I also like the character designs.

Fate/Stay Night. First of all, nice title. The story line sounds really good. I'll check this out when it comes.

From Shade to Mamoru. The first thing that caught my attention was the little puppy on the official site. Cute.

I don't know if I'll check out Revival Sky, because the storyline isn't too appealing to me BUT I like the concept. I may look into it.

Tactical Roar. The images look appealing. Storyline sounds good. a + b = maybe

Ayakashi. Nice designs!

Nerima Daikon Brothers. Meh, doesn't appeal but the Panda's with guitars are awesome.

Meine Liebe reminds me of Escaflowne...kinda.

Ergo Proxy. Wow. "From the creators of Samurai Champloo and Witch Hunter Robin" says it all.

Kasimasi. How!................................strange.

So far, I only like the characters of Looking Up at the Half Moon.

More comments of the rest later...

I just love the how the lead chick in Ergo Proxy looks. It's like Syd from Alias on some kinda undercover mission at a techno club or something.

Looking at Demonbanes site it looks like someone physically merged Edward Elric with Chrno from Chrno Crusade and produced that guy.

More OMG... Yeeeha

XXXholic...sweet. Will be interesting to see if it shows any of the Tsubasa Chronicles stuff in it, since it did in the manga of both.

Lets see, XXXholic can't be any worse than .hack//clamp (Tsubassa) was, that much is certain, Bee-Train just didn't do just about anything right with Tsubassa.

I'm waiting for Fate/Stay Night, having read the first chapter of the Manga, I'm intregged.
Digusia is well beyond intresting, and this is coming from someone (who has a GameCube) who hasn't played the PS2 game.

Other Waiting fors include Sasami Club (Cuase it's tenchi, natch), Soul Link (If it's Nadesico, then for the win!).

Lemon Angel Project sounds like it's going to be a rather funny piss take on H animation, and heaven knows I'm up for ruthless parody any time.

I think we can assume it's in production hell.Actually, for all we know, the air date can be decided a month or two before it airs. Besides, Toei would of mentioned somehting if it was indeed canned. So all we can do is wait.

EDIT: One last thing. Notice how long it took Toei to announced the rest of Kinnikuman Nisei. Even though the epsiodes were produced, Toei never aired the rest for the longest time. True, the ratings didn't help, but atleast it's airing one year later. (Then again, judging from the site, there's going to be 25 more episodes, but my Kanji skills SUCK)

I'd be more inclined to back you on that viewpoint if it weren't for the fact it doesn't even seem to be any evidence that anything is being moved on for it. Normally there is some degree of pre-hype for this kind of stuff - character designs in magazines, trailers, press releases (the lack of PR is particularly troubling because there never has been an official CN America PR on the subject, and nothings come out of any of the participating studios since the Tokyo Animation Fair) - and those types of things often 6+ months in advance of any launch. Only way I could see it having a chance is if CN announces it at the annual upfront in the spring, and if that's when they announce it, we probably won't see it until the early fall, and even that's being optimistic. CN's had some upfront announcements that ultimately amounted to vaporware (unless Electric Girl was meant for 2006 - late 2006,) or at the very least took a long while to materialize, so even with a CN upfront note, I'd be skeptical.

Ah, I see your reason of being skeptical. Though, it's been speculated it's being Japan only, there hasn't been any information from Toei other then a press release by them saying it's being worked on. I've checked Yahoo Auctions occasionally, (which I should do that again) to see if there were any character designs or scripts, but nothing of interest so far.

Of course, I could check around the "Current" rumors on the series with a japanese friend of mine, due to her itnerest on this subject. Hopefully we may be able to piece something together if I can find anything on it. Then again, usually rumors lead to nothing. (Though, the sonic x ep. 53+ rumors did adventually come true) Ah well, as I said before, all we can do is wait.

xxxHOLiC is the only thing I noticed that I'm actually excited to see. I'm sure I'll watch AMG, but mainly in the hopes that it will be better than the first series, which to me was a great disappointment.

Amaenaideyo!! KATSU!! makes me laugh, mainly because American fansub groups did about two episodes of the Amaenaideyo!! series, then ran from it as if it had Bird Flu. :anime: Apparently, there are still some cultural divides between us an Japan that just can't be crossed.

Ah, I see your reason of being skeptical. Though, it's been speculated it's being Japan only,

They wouldn't have bothered to have Sam Register as an Executive Producer on it if CN America money wasn't backing it, so I highly doubt that if it comes to fruition it'll be Japan only.

From over 6 months ago. Normally we get some more data by then.

I've checked Yahoo Auctions occasionally, (which I should do that again) to see if there were any character designs or scripts, but nothing of interest so far.

Again, there would atleast be a blurb in Newtype or something like, especially given that it's coming from Toei.

Like I said, it really hinges on the annual upfront. If they say it's being worked on there, I'll hold out for it. Without that, it's probably dead in the water.

It seems about every new show coming from Japan nowadays has an ensemble of girls. "From Shade to Mamarou" strikes me as bearing some visual resemblence to the cast of "Sailor Moon" (well, look at it, the girl up front has a distinctive hairstyle, there's a miko, there's a big brownette with ribbonned ponytail and smaller girl with green hair--though from their expressions, ther personalities seem the reverse of Sailor Jupitor and Sailor Mercury), and someone in a boy's school uniform with coke-bottom-lensed glasses).

It looks like they've totally changed the look of "Crash! B-Daman" (cutesy characters give way to more sharp-edged animation, kinda the reverse of what "Beyblade" did from Season 1 to Season 2). "Crash" will now end up on CN at some point, I imagine, now that ABC Family has canceled the first season (just before the final episode--again!) and it's about to start running again on CN this Friday morning (personally, I found the show a bit disappointing, if CN is going to start running ABC Family castoffs, I think a more intelligent management would have pursued "Monster Rancher" or even "Medabots").

I couldn't figure out what "Gar-Kun" was about, but I must admit the characters look intriguing.

What I can't figure out is why nobody has picked up "Precure" yet, with all the episodes the show will have after this newest season. I think it's been well proven that there's an audience out there for that type of series, the difficulty has been finding an outlet that doesn't cut the original to ribbons and destroy what drew viewers to it in the first place.

As far as the latest "Pretty Sammy" series, I do hope the brunet kid in "Sasami Club" is Misao, I found her the truly great Sasami companion in the two "Pretty Sammy" series (no intent to slight Sasami or even Washau, Ryo-oki, et al, it's just that she was by far the real gem of the series). Unless they think Misao already had her star turn in BPS.

Nerima Daikon Brothers? What is this? The Blues Brothers of Japan?

Exactly my reaction. I wonder if the creators noticed one of the brothers is a sister? (Oh, well, in the original "Detective Conan" the Detective Kids Club was actually the Detective Boys, even though two members were girls!) Still, I'd be really interested to see this one.

I really wish I knew what half of these sites say about their shows, well atleast they look interesting.

I totally agree with you, I bet there are others who would love to know the latest out of Japan. "Newtype USA" started out doing a lot of that, but now it's just another "Protoculture Addicts" or "Anime Insider" that costs twice as much.

P.S.--I hope these rumors of the demise of PPGZ are unfounded.

Majikano = Generic, but hilarious
Kagihime = Kingdom Hearts, anime style. Good, fanservice, tons of pastels.
F/S Night = Good, as expected.
Tactical Roar = I've never seen so much fanservice in a single episode of a Bandai show, ever. That said, it was interesting.
Lemon Angel project = Horrible voice acting, good music.
Rakugo-Tennyo = generic, but cute.
nerima Daikon Brothers = Best show this season, easily. And it has so much transposed karaoke.

having so many episodes is probably the problem. if they can't get it on TV here that makes long shows to much of a risk to put dvd-only :( I call it the MMPPP clause :crying:

Dramatic? You think so? One thing though..I think the funny factor was a bit off but I believe it will get better. The part in which he got hit by the spaceship seemed Abenobashi to me (good thing).

Watched Kasimasi - You know, when you've got good writing, you can sell almost any taboo, atleast on an intellectual level. You can even pull some good emotion out of it. I'm not getting that from this show. At all. The comedy was just a little too generic (outside of the awesome engrish. ALIENS ATTACK YOU SAYYY?.) As was the setting. And character design. And characters. I mean, this season seems like such a throw away to me that at this point I'll give it a shot, but it's really because better options have yet to present themselves.

OTOH, I do have a 20+ DVD backlog. Maybe that should get some attention instead. :anime:

Or some one should recommend me something from the new season.

I'm really looking forward to the Nana anime. Hopefully it won't have the same failings as the Paradise Kiss adaptation.

I wouldn't call the Parakiss adaption a failure by any stretch. I'll say it does play things more seriously than manga (nixing all the forth-wall breaking first an foremost,) but it allowed the show to have a visual style and palette that really resonates well with the high-fashion elements and the dramatic elements of the manga. It's exact same adaptation technique used on Beck, and like with Beck, I think that makes sense when it comes to making a series that looks good and flows naturally on TV - it also really helps ground both shows in a real world context, which is critical because even in their manga forms they are really set in the here and now - they aren't particularly fantasies in any fashion.

If anything, Nana is going to better suited to that kind of adaption because it more realistic in overall tone and setting than Beck and Parakiss. However, I'm not sure who the studio is on the series, so it could be radically different. If Nana's not Madhouse, expect a very different directorial style.

Parakiss is indeed visually stunning, but it suffers from terrible pacing. I know people who were turned off by the slow beginning, and so much was crammed into the final episodes that the ending is very rushed and unsatisfactory (especially problematic considering that it presents a final resolution that almost goes against the manga's message). That disappointed me, since the Parakiss manga was completed long before the anime went into production and the staff had to know where the story was going. Since Nana is (unless I'm mistaken) still being serialized, I'd hate it if the storyline suffered from similiar pacing issues.

Finally worked up the energy to watch Fate/Stay Night. I watched it with low expectations so I wouldn't be disappointed if it was bad but to my surprise (well not really) it was pretty darn good. It was slow but it is just the first episode. The opening theme is really nice and fitting. The animation is well suited. The beginning scene was a nice hook. Basically, the first episode was an introduction to the main character. I expect pretty good things to come out of Fate?Stay Night.

I saw the first two episodes now and umm it seems kind of dark/deep to me  to much blood especially in episode 2  but I really do like the art and music and that Archer class guy is pretty cool :anime:

if it is licensed already is there any idea when the dvds will start to come out here?

Well it IS based off of an adult video game, so blood is to be expected.

Maybe we'll even see one of the sex scenes, shadow-style.

You know, back in the day people got excited about licensing, so they didn't have to steal the show to see it.

Indeed. The faster anime is imported the better.

I never said I was mad that it was licensed already. I was hoping maybe somebody besides FUNI could get it. Oh well, they'll probably do a good job.

I never said anything because I figured everyone already knew.

It's never even been released in the states, and a large population of the anime community knows about it, plus it's one of the largest selling adult visual novels in Japan.

Anyways, not to get into fansub or whatever discussion, but my personal view is that as long as it isn't on DVD for us to consume(err, buy), then it's fair game. Of course, I'll still look down on those that don't buy it when it has been released, of course.

I doubt THAT many people got that excited for feeling bad about stealing, but rather just because fansub quality used to be so crappy compared to official releases. People always look back on the old fanbase with some nostalgic code of honor thing but there's always been those "leech" types.

Anyway, I previewed Fate/Stay Night and I'm probably definitely buying it when it comes stateside... Although not much more looks too interesting until April at this point outside of Ergo Proxy.

I don't know anything about games :( but it is a good show :)

after the whole long explanation of the holy grail war in episode 3 I was left thinking ummmm is this an adult Zatch Bell what with the defeating servants or masters to win and be the last one standing

and then I found this picture (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v727/usadahikaru/tz2/fatebell.jpg)

anyway 3 episodes is about a dvds worth so no more I will hold off and await whoever the licensor is to release it :)

Notes:

-I watched Kasimasi episode 2. Much, much better. The comedy hit the mark more, and the direction sold the drama this time. It's still not that brilliant, but it's got potential now.

-Finished Parakiss. Personally, I liked the denouement. Granted, I've not read the whole manga, so I can't judge it on that basis, but the basis of "is it a satisfying, engaging anime" all I can say is yes. I hope this gets picked up sooner rather than later.
