There are more, but I'm only including the important ones.

He was the first and he's still the best

He was the first and he's still the bestAmen to that. Knuckles is great, Tails is cool, and I like Amy. Rogue is alright, I liked Shadow, but his new game feels like an attempt to destruct him, DR. ROBOTNIK (not Eggman) is always a great villain.
I hate Big the Cat with a passion, and Cream the Bunny, while I don't hate her, feels like such an unneeded character.

I like Sonic first and foremost, but the secondary characters are great when they interact together for the venefit of the plot. I like most of them, save for Big, since he is un-interesting and just doesn't really fit the other character's style. I agree about Cream, too. She's unneccesary, but I don't really dislike her.

I've always been a huge fan of Mr. Prower. I think I'll go with him.

Doctor Robotnik. Why'd they have to change his name to something so stupid?

Knuckles, becasue I used to use him all the time in Sonic and Knuckles. His flying ability made that game so much easier.

Knuckles, but only the Archie Comics version of Knuckles. Segasonic's interpretation of all their characters makes them look like character-less cyphers, Knuckles in particular.

Where is the "I-detest-them-all" option? Anyway, as for who my favorite Sonic character is, it's a three-way tie between Amy, Knuckles, and Rouge.

They didn't. Eggman was always his name in the Japanese version.

I like Sonic games, but Sonic is a little too cocky for me, although I still think he's awesome. Shadow is just plain SWEET, but he's very new to the whole existing thing, so he doesn't get my vote.
Miles! The Tailinator! Prower! His flying makes the games incredibly easy, and he's the perfect "little brother" for Sonic. Did I mention he's a FOX? :p :anime: :D

Tails, for a few nostalgic reasons. As much fun as I had with Sonic 1, I played it in anticipation of my copy of Sonic 2, which was even better. The little vignette at the end of Sonic 2 sealed Tails' place in my gaming memories. Then Sonic 3 came along and differentiated Tails' gameplay quite nicely.
On the other hand... I don't care so much for the new characters or character development that came after Sonic & Knuckles. Same goes for the "world building" ushered in with Sonic Adventure. I have no problem with expanding on things, but I wish they'd have gone about it differently.
They didn't. Eggman was always his name in the Japanese version. And from the very beginning, he was intended to be Robotnik in North America. The names in both regions were official and concurrent.

Yeah, that name change was unexpectedly stupid. Anyway, yeah, Robotnik is the best character.

EGGMAN:
THE MOVIE
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
I'd watch that.
But, seriously, Eggman is THE best character. EVAH! All those disagree shall get rolled on by him himself.

Definitely Shadow, but not including Espio, Vector, Mighty and Charmy makes me cry.

I agree, but I gotta say I can't stand Sonic Heroes' take on Vector. Him being bulky and the boss of a stupid detective agency was lame.
I've been a Tails fan since about 94.

Sonic, Tails and Knuckles hold up well. Amy was a decent addition if only to fill out a female sidekick role, and Cream's nicely unobtrusive, and has a cute design.
I can see a need for Shadow as the answer to Nintendo's Wario, but intentionally angsty, badass characters in a kids game dont work well.

Sonic remains my favorite, ever since I woke up Christmas morning when I was 8 or 9 with that awesome Sonic plush sitting in the top of my stocking. (I still have that plush too, and no it's not for sale :p). He's really my second favorite video game character out there--and his franchise is second best, only beaten by the man himself, Mario.
I've always liked Miles "Tails" Prower alot too. I was surprised to learn how young he was via the voice work (much maligned, but I think it's great) of Sonic Adventure. Still, this fox is full of cool in my book.
Knuckles is alright, but my main memories come from Sonic & Knuckles (which I rented with Sonic 3 on a regular basis from my local Harco Drug for 99 cents each back in the day) with him as a bad guy. I do like his character in Sonic X, especially what I feel is the best episode of that series, "Cracking Knuckles."
Amy Rose is another favorite of mine too. Her voice work in both the game and the anime (none other than Lisa "Lina Inverse" Ortiz) is good, and she's really funny. And, I always liked her levels on Sonic Adventure.
Shadow I've never really cared for. Sonic Adventure 2 was one of my least favorite Sonic games (although the opening Sonic level rocked).
Cream I loved in Sonic Advance 2, and from that, I really imagined her with a much more grown-up and confident voice. Still, the character is very cute in Sonic X.
