Thought I'd get it out of the way now, rather than wait until midnight or such....and just to be spirited, I'll throw this bit of ludicrousness in:

(Cut to the "Artemis Theater" of Harlem, New York....inside, we see "Jackie Chan Adventures" villain Chandu (in Valmont-form) on stage, with the Hired Goon Squad standing nearby; Chandu's talking into a cell phone)

CHANDU: (into the phone) Yes, I know....I must find more worthwhile roles...something besides playing the usual stock Saturday morning villain. Something where I get to do something besides stare sternly at Valmont's goons, breath fire and utter cliched villainous dialogue. Otherwise, I'll be back to doing voiceover fill-ins on occasion for Cobra Commander in the next incarnation of "G.I. Joe" again--- (sees he's on camera, and hangs up) Oh, um.... greetings, loyal viewers. It is I, the star villain of "Jackie Chan Adventures", Chandu the fire demon sorceror. Your patience for watching such delightfully sinister KWB programming as the "Mass Quantities of Meowth" marathon and "A Very Yu-Gi-Oh Chanukah" shall be rewarded, with "Chandu's Spell-Castin' New Year's Eve". (Mutters) "Spell-Castin'?" (Shakes his head) Anyway....tonight, on New Year's Eve, we shall be counting down to midnight from here at the Artemis Theater in Harlem, New York with an array of special guest villain appearances (shots of Lex Luthor, Mojo Jojo, Team Rocket, and whoever the bad guys on "Cardcaptors" are, are shown on-screen), various musical stylings from popular musical performers (shot of bands such as Creed, Jay-Z, Britney Spears, and a host of other groups/musicians are seen, all with the caption "Recorded LIVE three weeks earlier". The word "LIVE" is larger than the rest of the text, and in bold red), and at midnight, the dropping of....(eyes narrow) an *anvil*?!? (Hears someone saying something from off-screen) "Reused from an earlier Kids' WB New Year's countdown"...the budgeting disappoints me... (eyes glow in disapproval) There shall also be a delightful guest appearance by comedian Margaret Cho...

SHORT HIRED GOON WITH THE SUNGLASSES: Margaret Cho?! (Snickers)

CHANDU: (doing the stern stare with eyes glowing/flame slightly flaring thing) You *DARE* make fun of the comedic genius of Ms. *Cho*?!

(The hired goons go into cowardly mode)

GOON #1: Um, no, man.

GOON #2: Uh-uh.

GOON #3: "All-American Girl" was da *bomb*.

CHANDU: *Excellent*. We also shall be having special guest appearances throughout the evening via satellite by none other than... (reads a card) my demonic *bretheren*. (Eyes glow, and is motionless; with a sullen look, he tosses the card over his shoulder) Anyway....if you wish to watch the idiotic, "wholesome" panderings of the apparently-as-immortal-as-I-am Dick Clark, view *him* if you wish. But only here shall you be able to spend New Year's Eve with a brief marathon of "Jackie Chan Adventures" episodes, airing back-to-back, centering around *me*....

SKINNY GOON: Um, big C? Slight prob with those episodes....we, uh, sorta taped over them.

CHANDU: (Irate) WHAT?!

SKINNY GOON: Well, we wuz watchin' a "Saturday Night Live" marathon, and Adam Sandler was doin' that "playing the guitar" bit and they had those head-bopping guys, and it was so funny we had to get 'em all on tape, and... well, (holds up the tapes that once held the JCA eps in question) Eh-heh. Um, we're really sorry?

CHANDU: (Eyes flaring)You *ruined* perfectly legitimate episodes for *ADAM SANDLER*?! (To the camera) A slight change to the offerings; we shall also be offering tips on dealing with one's associates during the holiday season.

GOON: Um, how do ya do that?

CHANDU: (Sinisterly) Like *this*... (Releases a big, screen-filling flameburst; the title of the special fills the screen as well, with an announcer telling us to "tune in after the 'Cubix's Back, and You're Gonna Be In Trouble Marathon'", on the WB....)

That was...a pointless way to end 2001 on. But at least I didn't make some labored "2001: A Space Odyssey" reference...

:D Unfortunately, I *don't* have a pointless way to end 2001, so I'll just say HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

And I had my first drink of eggnog! It made me feel all woozy......I'm losing my mind, I can feel it....

Conclusion: You are a very good observer, Narfpinky! :D I didn't even notice. This calls for a party!

Wait.....we're having one already? Aw, nuts.

New Year's is a good time to look back on all of our accomplishments this year. Of course, if we did that, it may turn into this. (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?threadid=2587&highlight=independence) A holiday thread gone haywire.....Narfpinky, we certainly want to keep you happy and peppy and bursting with---well, you get the picture. ;)

Thanks :-) As long as it's close to the "special hour":

[Cut to "Chandu's Spell-Castin' New Year's Eve" special....we see the theater's packed with merrymakers, spilling over into and around the streets near the theater. Inside, Chandu (in Valmont-form, dressed in a tuxedo) is on stage, clapping like typical TV award show hosts do for some performer)

CHANDU: Yes....I trust you all enjoyed the comedic stylings of Ms. Cho.... "trouble with dating", indeed. *Ahem*. Now then, it's time to cut to our representative in Townsville, one Mojo Jojo....

[Cut to Mojo on a video monitor on stage, where we see Mojo standing in front of Volcano Mountain; he's dressed like Dick Clark does on his New Year's special, with a headset, microphone, and winter gear. Various people are celebrating in the town park...]

MOJO: Greetings and salutations, Mr. Chandu.

CHANDU: Tell me, are things there quite festive with the humans' merrymaking?

MOJO: Of course they are. While normally I would have to dispose and remove these humans for their obnoxious noisemaking and sound levels, I have decided to hold off on doing so until the following day, which would be tomorrow...

CHANDU: Anything particularly evil, sinister, or otherwise malicious interesting occurring?

MOJO: (Eyes widening briefly) There was some person clearly overcome with intoxicated drunkenness who insisted on setting fire to a trash can nearby, but otherwise...no.

CHANDU: Hmm. Well, how goes that athletic team you managed to become associated with? I see various humans in the background with those "Touchdown Monkey" stuffed playthings...

MOJO: (Eyes widening again, with excitement) YES! While the Colts have failed to meet the objective goal of gaining enough points to ensure a successful victory against the Rams on Sunday, their next game shall surely meet with the success they need to earn a substantial victory and win. By improving their defensive actions on the field, this defensiveness shall ensure they defend their---

CHANDU: (Looking bored) Erm, yes....thank you, Mojo Jojo. (Screen goes mute, as Mojo continues describing the Colts' need for "defensive defense") We shall return with the final countdown to midnight, followed by seeing New Year's celebrations all around the Netherworld (shots of various demon-creatures, ghouls, etc. are seen, with party hats and noisemakers) right after a word from our sponsors...

[Commercials for Microsoft, Pokemon, and McDonald's play...we briefly hear Chandu muttering "if Space Ghost and that Brak can do this stuff, so can I...."]

:-)

Mom rented "9 1/2 Weeks" for me. Kim Basinger was hot and Mickey Rourke was a creep in that movie. I said Happy New Year to a few people, watched the ball drop in Times Square, and now I'm on here.

Here's to a brighter, happier year. Rock 'n' roll!

2002...LET'S BOOGIE!

While Chandu's (Although I think it's actually spelled Shendu) News Year Special was going on...Fox was airing IT's special...

Cut to a Stage...it's looks like a high school auditorium...only much more broken down. There are some decorations...obviously hand made. One of the lights in the background is flickering, and there is occasional static on the screen Davis stands alone on the stage...Veemon enters..
DAVIS: Oh good, hey Veemon, and Hi everyone watching! Yes that means you mom! Welcome to Fox's Rocking Digimon New Years Eve Special! Not only are we going to be airing Lots of shows staring me! But we're gonna meet the new "Power Rangers - Not Dead Yet Squad!"
VEEMON: (On Phone) Yeah, I'm working some dumb special on Fox...are you sure you can't get me onto Pokemon?......I could SO take that Meowth......
DAVIS: VeeMon!!! Knock it off, we're on!
VEEMON: (To Davis) No one's watching, and I WANT to have a job in 2002! (To Phone) ...ok, ok..no pokemon.....how about PPG? I could be a new villian...
Davis pushes Veemon offstage
DAVIS: Heh, I ned to straighten VeeMon out, so lets go live to the Power Rangers!
Cut To New Red Ranger (Some guy in red spandex, through out, make odd karate-esk poses)
RED RANGER: THANk you daVIS! .. I am....THE ....red rANgER! Watch the POWER GUARd....er....RANGERs on FOX!...Fox? are they still even on the air? Bloody hell, how did I get roped into this?
Quick Cut Back to Davis
DAVIS: (Talking to someone offstage) Waht do you mean we're airing Season 3? I can't believe this! What the..HI! Welcome back! We're gonna go to comercial now...we'll be right back!

<Black.....then a fox kids promo....the sound of crying can be heard>

Is it "Chandu" or "Shendu"? I'd been following the way BELCH spelled it, figuring it seemed like the right spelling (plus, I think there was some old movie with a character from the Far East named Chandu in it, which might be what the JCA makers are referencing re: dragon-boy's name). Would feel a bit embarrassed to find that it's actually "Shendu" all this time :-)

Anyway....wrapping up my little New Year's thingy:
[Cut to the West Coast, namely Pasadena for the Rose Bowl parade....the networks are all there in full-force, including, oddly enough, the WB. We see Chandu (or "Shendu") is there, in a 70's-style TV anchorman blazer with a WB logo on the front, holding a microphone, and standing next to Father Time and Loud Kiddington (Dressed similarly)...however, Chandu looks a bit, erm, tipsy...]

FATHER TIME: And doesn't the Shelbyville, Indiana High school marching band look *wonderful*?

LOUD: (YELLING) YES, THEY SURE DO! WHAT DO YOU THINK, DRAGON-BOY?

CHANDU: (Gripping the sides of his/Valmont's head, eyes glowing) I *think* I had a bit too much of my second cousin's discount-store-clearance-aisle fermented grape juice at that post-special wrap party.... all I can remember is that anvil dropping....that theater taking another pounding by those human revelers, or something...and arguing with my demonic bretheren over, erm, something...or other.... and a big fight....or somesuch, or other.... something about a theater repair bill... wandering around Central Park in the dead of night... and, uh, erm..... hmph. (Grips the side of his head) *Accursed headache*!! Erm, excuse me... (Walks off, en route to a drug store for aspirin... Father Time and Loud shrug)

FATHER TIME: And he dragged himself out to the west coast to do this thing the following *morning*? Boy, what some people won't do to avoid being typecast...

LOUD: YOU SAID IT! (Clasps his hand over his mouth) Erm, "you said it"? (Grins)

Most Asian names--for people, cities, rivers, etc.--have two spellings, due to Western influence. I wasn't sure how to spell it at first myself--I tried spelling it "Xantu" at one point, to make it look authentically Chinese, and that just looked horribly off to me. So I went with the "Chandu" spelling. I chanced to look at a book version of JCA #1 the other day at Wal-Mart and noted they spelled it "Shandu"...though I can't say if that was the authoritative version (I only glanced a few pages on the rack and I don't even know if it bothered naming Valmont's goons)....

One support for the "C" spelling (besides the movie reference I saw once): I vaguely recall the skinny hired goon guy referring to Chandu on one occasion as "big C" (or somesuch, vs. Valmont as "big V")....
