Lots of rare stuff on tonight's show. Very good! Here's what aired:

"Porky's Poultry Plant" (Computer Colorized)
"You're an Education" (Dubbed/Edited)
"Puss 'n' Booty"
"Swooner Crooner" (Dubbed/Edited)
"Nasty Quacks"

I have never seen "Puss 'n' Booty" in its Black and White version before! Despite the black and Chinese characters edited from "You're an Education" it was a great show! Let's hope for even better tonight! I bet there's a reason why "Cartoon News Reels" is being shown at 3:00 a.m. Hopefully, there will be a showing of "Bosko's Picture Show" or "Buddy's Theatre."

Is it just me, or did this show end early? I mean, they still had time for 1 more cartoon. I thought it would be HARE REMOVER.

Hey, Pietro, what were the edits in "You're an Education?"
Also - the "Swooner Crooner" edit - where was poor old Jolson's spot, after the Nelson Eddy chicken?

I'm still betting that it's due to contract obligations that say that all of the eps have to be shown in 2001. But we could still see some interesting stuff.

This was a good show tonight. Too bad about the edits, but they were good cartoons and it had good info.

The show ended around 48 or 49 past the hour, so there sure was room for 1 more cartoon. They could've aired one of Frank Tashlin's best, Porky's Romance, although it would've probably been edited, too.

Actually, I think they were just about to air that Bugs cartoon, but then is suddenly jumped to the intro to "Nasty Quacks." I think CN had some kind of technical error.

All in all, tonight's episode was great! Let's hope they air Bosko tonight!

BTW Cartoon Man, why don't you like computer colorized cartoons? They are pretty good.

No Bosko, but we got something else pretty surprising on the Toonheads- a Private Snafu cartoon!

Can anyone post what they did with the opening and closing credits to this one? Were they the originals with zooming Warner shield, and the proper music from the cartoon itself (the end credits of this one has a different, more 'jaunty' jingle when Porky rips out of the drum at the end).....

Speakin' of Frank Tashlin, where can I get a copy of the book, "The Bear That Wasn't"? Or is it still in print?

Just in case you guys want to know what was edited in "You're an Education," here's what's was edited:
At the beginning the "Visit Africa" and "Visit China" scenes were removed, the obese black singers, and The Asia Minor Baby.

They should've squeezed just one more cartoon in (they should've aired "Porky Pig's Feat" or "Porky's Romance.")

I think this was the very first Toonheads episode to feature a computer colorized cartoon too!:)

It's still in print and Amazon.com has it. It only costs $2.00.

I loved that episode, it's a shame about the edits, which I didn't notice until I read the comments here this morning. Edits in this kind of show are unacceptable, but I liked the show anyway. I had gone out last night and set the timer, and reviewed the tape last night too late to fool with logging on to the internet  . It was a joy to see "Puss and Booty" in black and white, boy, is that an improvement! They should leave this one in black and white and show it regularly in that form, the redrawn is horrible. I also enjoyed seeing the camera angles Tashlin uses in this film, particularly when the cat is sneaking atop the rafters. I sure as heck didn't NOTICE a cut in "Swooner Crooner", but I barely payed attention to it anyway, I'm tired of that cartoon. What always interests me about it though is the colors...Tashlin begins the cartoon at sunset, and ends it at night, and if you watch the backgrounds there is a slow progression there. The fact that they ran "Porky's Poultry Plant" in color and discussed it with black and white footage annoyed me, with this cartoon it doesn't make much difference, we still see Tashlin's work, but there's an inconsistency there....at least introduce it as "the colorized version of:..." The other information about Frank Tashlin was fascinating. I enjoyed that bit about Bing Crosby.

You can see something similar (though a little more obvious) in "A Tale Of Two Kitties."

The redrawn of "Puss N' Booty" really is pretty bad. In the redrawn I thought his head was detatched from his body when he was pacing on the fence, and the character's movements didn't match the background whenever they walked up the stairs. Not to mention that the backgrounds of the later B&W Looney Tunes don't translate over to color well at all because of how they were stylized.

It's too bad they don't have the rights to his Columbia work, "The Fox and The Grapes" uses lots of the same techniques used in his 40s Looney Tunes (Like showing the action reflected in another character's eyes).

Overall, a great episode. Maybe someday they can fix "Porky's Poultry Plant"(the colorized print made me dizzy for some reason) and "You're an Education" (just like they switched from a redrawn print of "I Like Mountain Music" to the B&W version) when it is rerun.

There IS a computer colorized version of "Puss N' Booty", which aired on Nickelodeon in the mid-1990s (before going to the WB network), but no one seems to have it on tape. I DO remember the showing of it on KidsWB's BUGS N' DAFFY, in its CZ form.

This has NOT been my day...

Because there are no new Toon Heads or Popeye Show scheduled after the 31st, I changed the settings for these shows on my VCR from weekly to once; trouble is, in the process I must have misprogrammed that overnight T.H. (with the Snafu short -- dangit.... that didn't show up at all as far as I can see) and LNB&W (that one I must have made early Sat. instead of Sun., 'cuz I found an hour of -- [cringe] Powerpuff Goils...)

But at least I got the primetime T.H., with the B&W "Puss and Booty"...FINALLY! I get to watch this in something other than that sucky hand-coloured version...[cringe again]

I did enjoy "Toon Heads" Tish Tash episode (finally great to "Puss N' Booty" in B&W for the very first time) last night but was #@%$ off, that the show only lasted 48 mintues, but instead of CN adding an extra Tashlin cartoon we get that "GOD AWFUL" annoying Apples/Powerpuff Girls video....Man would I have loved to see Tashlin's greatest WB cartoon, "Porky's Romance" instead of that crappy music video

Actually, on Late Night Black and white the other night they aired a black and white "Porky at the Crocadero", a very good Tashlin film. I didn't have it in that format, and the rest of the LN B/W show was all stuff I didn't want, so I copied "Crocadero" onto the tape I used for the special, so it comes after the special and covers up that Powerpuff thing. Why do they run that thing so often anyway? I like the other Powerpuff music thing by "Shonen Knife" better, but I'm sick of that now too. I'm also tired of that Elmer Fudd video.

Well, I imagine they hope it'll help sell those Powerpuff Girls CDs available at your local music store, ya know...

Amen to that, Nelson. They could at least have thrown in "Porky's Romance" as well. Why that toon is still MIA is beyond me!

Matthew, are they still cutting the Cab Calloway segment out of "Porky At The Crocodero"?

As for Porky's Romance - the only version I've ever seen is the redrawn version. Ugh!
It's as bad as the redrawn Puss N' Booty! I'd rather not be subjected to THAT version ever again! And, IMHO, the reason why this Tashlin classic is MIA is because of Porky's final act in the cartoon - PETA would go nuts!:D

The Cab Calloway bit was in Porky at the Crocadero on LNB&W. I think it's been there every time I've watched it on LNB&W.

I taped "Porky's Romance" when it aired a year or two ago, it was the black and white version, and I think it was on in the middle of the night. I don't know why it's not on much, it's one of Tashlin's best films, aside from my favorite, "Scrap Happy Daffy". The ending?well, the mutt deserved it, he's a snob! Anyway, "Porky at the Crocadero" does not air as frequently as some shorts, but it is fully uncut. There is a computer colorized version that appears on CN sometimes that is beautifully done, much better and brighter than most. I wonder why they would cut it? All he does is imitate Cab Calloway...but I guess the fact that Porky imitates him in blackface might make the PC police mad. I've never heard any controversy surrounding that film though, it's a very funny caricature too, just what Calloway did. Watch TCM inbetween movies, occasionally Vitaphone Musical shorts with Cab Calloway air, they're great.

PORKY'S ROMANCE is missing not because of the ending scene, but because of a scene where Porky tries to hang himself. That scene is too major to edit out.

Actually, I've never seen a censored version of "Porky At The Crocodero" air on CN. The Calloway segment was one of my absolute favorite segments out of all WB cartoons as a child. Of course, I had no idea who Cab Calloway actually was, I just thought the song was hilarious.

Back in 1995, when my local station showed KidsWB! and "That Warner Bros." they showed the CZ version of "Porky's Romance" but edited out the ending where Porky kicks that snobby mutt. I don't know why they edited that. Like Matthew said that mutt deserved it. I also remember seeing "Puss 'n' Botty" on "That's Warner Bros." too.

Anyone have any idea why the Al Jolson bird is cut from Swooner Crooner? I mean on Toonheads he's clearly visible during ToonHeads Trivia! Stupid.

They used a hybrid open from '41-43, with the proper music, the larger b/w rings with the zooming shield, and the Porky+Daffy LT b/w title.

The close was a '39 Porky synch'ed with what to me sounded like the stock '41 theme.

Jaunty? Sorta like the original (pre-dubbing) Buckaroo Bugs?

J Lee

The opening rings were the originals (the late 1942s with the B&W opening have a slightly larger WB shield), while the end music was a slight variation by Stalling on his regular 1941-46 LT closing music, with the 1938-39 image. It's the copy they used for the 1990 colorization of the cartoon (purple rings instead of orange on the opening titles, but they got the red WB shield right).

As for "Crockadero" CN doesn't edit either the B&W or the computer colorized versions (kudos and keep up the good work). When it ran on Nickelodeon, the few seconds when Porky does his run across the screen in the middle of Calloway's "Chinatown" number was cut.
