I'm considering checking out Bandai's Brain Powered DVDs. I've enjoyed everything from Tomino that I've seen (even stuff like Dunbine that honestly wasn't that great), but Brain Powered has a rather infamous reputation because of the whole "This will be an EVA killer" debacle. I understand that it's prone to many of the same things Evangelion is usually criticized for. On the other hand, I liked EVA and didn't mind having to think about what was going on for a while to have an idea of it. Plus, it's Tomino. (Methinks I smell an Orphan-takes-off-and-everybody-dies ending...)

So... has anybody here actually watched the show who can give me an opinion on it?

I have and I can clear up the whole Eva debacle.

Yoshiyuki Tomino was originally suppose to direct Evangelion, but could not do so as he was sick. After he recovered and took a look at Eva, he claimed he could do a much better job and released Brain Powered.

In terms of animation and character development, Eva is better. But in terms of story and music, Brain Powered is unbeatable. The story takes off at a pretty brisk pace. The characters change rapidly and there are a couple of twists here and there. The battles are not very action packed, but the tension is there. It IS a series using orphans as the theme and even the antagonist ship is blantantly called Orphan.

I'd say it's worth it for the story and music alone. I liked how the drama was built up and how, even with average animation, the music can convey the tone of a scene perfectly.
