It's my guess for top 5 events of the year 2001. :)

My picks are

#1 - Attack-terrorist or september 11th

#2 - The very hot summer days on Quebec

#3 - Manif for the Sommet of the Ameriques on Quebec's parlement

#4 - Timothy McVeigh's execution

#5 - The Napster's trial

Who's that yours? :D

I don't recall any other year, when the #1 Most Importaint Event was so far ahead of the others that 2-5 were reduced to "also rans."
None the less, I'll give it a try:

1. The September 11 Attacks

2. The overthrow of the Taliban government

3. The general decline of .com buisnesses

4. The resolution of the 2000 presidential election (how apalling, to discover how imprecise our current vote-counting devices are!)

5. The Microsoft Trials

One positive event out five- I hope next year's list has a better ratio than that

1. The Sept. 11 attacks and ensuing actions in Afghanistan. An obvious lock for first. The war in Afghanistan may also become the biggest event of 2002, from the likely lack of any quick resolution.

2. The Bush administration taking office. The controversial results of the 2000 elections, various changes in national policy initiated (the resurrection of "Star Wars", pulling out of a few international treaties, the tax cuts/tax refund checks [mine: a grand total of $20.90]), and other policies/actions get lumped in here...

3. The economic decline/start of the current recession. The dot-com bust probably would be lumped under here as well.

4. The anthrax attacks on various media outlets and Congressmen.

5. The Cincinnati racial riots of this past summer. Police brutality and racism being two issues raised by this summer's rioting.

Runners up:
- Timothy McVeigh's execution, the first federal execution in some time. A bigger issue around here where I live than on a national scale, I'd presume (it was the local paper's top-ranked local event of 2001 where I live).

- the Gary Condit affair.

- the Microsoft antitrust trials (and their pretty much getting off the hook...)

- the Napster trials (and related issues of consumer usage of copyrighted material)

- a few media mergers I've probably forgotten to keep track of...

- Michael Jordon's re-return from retirement.
