"There is no way those guys didn't know we were making this very movie as they took it upon themselves to do that episode," he tells Variety. "They know what they did and they know it was wrong. Period. These are guys I have always respected, but what they did was very creepy."No, what YOU'RE doing is very creepy, Knoxville....in fact, your entire career is.....
This isn't the first time I've seen a bloody fight over who came up with something no rational person would want to claim creation of, nor the first time I've seen the South Park guys as the targets....
Does anyone remember when John Kricfalusi tried to sue Trey and Matt because he said he came up with talking poop first? :anime:
The Farrellys, meanwhile, are attempting to stage their long-gestating update of The Three Stooges............um.......

From the linked to story:
"There's been no mention of a lawsuit"

Man, considering all the people and organizations that they bash on their show, it's ironic and Hillarious that they would get sued over something like this.:D
Still, the whole thing's pretty stupid. It IS possble that they both came up with the concept independantly.

Wasn't Nickelodeon involved with that lawsuit as well?

It's interesting how this is likely to stir up a lot of interest in what looks like a pretty crappy movie...
Smells like a publicity stunt to me!

Maybe they didn't steal it. As the old saying goes "great sick and twisted minds think alike" :) . Can't wait to see Matt and Trey turn this into an episode

What the....?
The men known for gross out gags suing the other men known for gross out gags?
This is Crumb/Bakshi all over again, now with poop!! And the mentally-challenged!!
If they have so much in common, why can't these people get along? Unbelievable!

It's a publicity stunt, folks. That episode was aired, what, almost 2 years ago? And I've been seeing trailers for this movie for almost a year now, since I remember seeing theatrical spots for it since last year as well, since around the time John Water's 'A Dirty Shame' was just coming out. They just kept pushing the movie back for some reason.
So either the Farrelly's have been living under a rock for the last year or so, or they waited until the movie's about to come out before they stir up controversy, it's as simple as that.

God forbid they try to publicly defend themselves.

Of course, there is one noticeable difference between The Ringer and South Park: Up The Down Steriod. Namely, the SP episode was hilariously funny and the movie, if the trailers are any indication, will stink on ice. The fact that The Ringer has been moldering away in a studio vault for 18 months while its studio tried to figure out what to do with it is not a good sign.
It's fairly common for similar ideas to surface at similar times without any indication that one is plagiarized from another. We could devote an entire thread to describing the similarities of Surface, Threshold, and Invasion (and another whole thread to describing their differences).

It's also interesting that South Park has touched on this already, in the episode "Simpsons Already Did It".

Plus the Farrely movies are almost always... downers. Sure they have moments of sheer comic genius, but for the most part a lot of their films (or the ones they just produce) just aren't that funny.
With the exception of Me, Myself, and Irene, all of their films try to be both overly dramatic and funny, and just fail horribly in the process. Shallow Hal was the worst offender of trying to be both genres at once.

You know, the strangest thing about Shallow Hal was that the funniest part of the movie wasn't supposed to be a joke. When I listened to the commentary on the DVD they seemed genuinely pissed off that people laughed at a particular scene when they didn't intend to make it a joke.

There's "no way"? Wow. I guess the universe works differently than I thought it did.

Well that WAS my gut reaction as soon as I saw the preview. "Hey, South Park did an episode like this", but it's not a big deal. Didn't that Josie and the Pussycats movie have a similar plot to the Party Posse episode of The Simpsons?

Didn't Al do something similiar on Married with Children when he got olded up, and competed in the old folks games?

Yup, although the South Park ep was the first thing I thought of when I saw the movie's concept for the first time (when Knoxville was on Leno the other day, IN A SWEATER VEST). I didn't like what I saw of the movie, and honestly, that kind of plot fits a 20-ish minute show more than an hour+-long movie.

You have to remember something here about Matt and Trey. They're big Monty Python fans. That was all they talked about when they first met each other. Heck they use a ton of references and skits from Monty Python on the South Park. And for those who followed Monty Python, they did something similar to the episode of Special Olympics. The Farrelly Brothers should know this fact about them and I bet that's where their idea for the movie spawned from. So what is there to discuss?

This is so like the Simpsons episode. Everything has been done already. I have always been a fan of the farleys but this is low of them and *****y.

I just saw a commercial for The Ringer, and it appears to have a scene that's almost identical to when Cartman is in the confessional booth in "Do the Handicapped Go To Hell" and the minister's arm comes through the divider and chokes him. Whoops.

Hey, look at that, Johnny Knoxville is hosting the South Park Christmas marathon and the showing of the Jackass movie. And along with that, they're showing commercials for The Ringer.
...so does that make everything okay?

What part was that?
The part where Hal abrubtly ignores his girlfriend because he doesn't recognize her, and then he calls her up and she screams "What the hell is wrong with you!" I thought that scene was absolutely hilarious, mostly due to Gwenyth Paltrow's performance, and I didn't realize that it wasn't intended to be a joke until I listened to the commentary when they claimed that people were insensitive to laugh at her pain or some crap like that. They seemed genuinely pissed off that a scene that they intended to be serious ended up playing as a joke.

What confuses me is the fact that The Special Olympics organization allowed The Ringer to be made. I haven't seen the film itself, but the movie's marketing seems it might be offensive to some(the poster's tagling("Be Special"), the TV spot in which the people spell Merry Christmas as Merry Krissmass and the main character laughs at them,etc.). Another part of the article that surprises me is that documentary that Trey and Matt are working on.

It seems the issue is resolved, as Knoxville hosted a South Park marathon on Christmas Eve.
