View Full Version : G4tv.com and Filter Cancelled

You can look at Tina Wood's website (tinawood.com), the G4 message boards, etc. The news is that these two shows have been cancelled.

For me, I don't care too much as I felt Diane Mizota was VERY annoying on Filter, despite the show being decent. G4tv.com on the other hand was a pretty good show when Tina Wood or Geoff Keighley would give their opinions (didn't agree with Laura's much, but hey she was okay I guess) and when they talked to game developers, that was awesome.

If they were trying to make better gaming shows, I'd be okay with this, but if the cancellation is for more shows like we've seen this year (The Whip Set, Man Show, Training Camp...) then this can't be good whatsoever.

Once Icons is cancelled and the repeats stop playing I think that's when I'll completely stop watching G4.

Talk on.

Yeah, it's basically a sign of things to come. G4 is trying to shape themselves into a network for men for some reason, so I wouldn't be surprised if they even got rid of X-Play soon.

I've always thought Diane Mizota to be really annoying, even if the show has been one of the more decent ones in G4's original programming. G4TV.com wasn't the same after Scot Rubin left, but it wasn't too bad with Geoff Keighley taking his place.

G4 has been a disappointment, even before the botched merger with TechTV. Icons is one of the few shows I still watch, and a lot of G4's latest shows aren't showing any real signs of improvement for the network. AotS is worse without Kevin Rose and X-Play/JD are the only other ones I really watch.

I've just about given up on G4, although these latest cancellations aren't that much of a loss.

Boo hoo. *sheds tear*

Well that's two terrible shows down. Now can we come back with something better than answering Goku90172's questions about why he's too lazy to go on Gamefaqs and find out how to beat The End in MGS3? Then DarknessNightmareDeathsword would scream how the graphics aren't as cool as Counter Strike. What a wonderful show for those who've never explored the inter of internet. Also Filter was just a half assed version of Attack of the Shows/Screensavers, but with one sane host that Tommy Tallarico loved to crap all over on any other program.

Too bad they can't hire real people in the industry and hear their opinions. And by real people, I don't mean complete asses like Tallarico.

Channels I never got cancelled shows I never watched...eh.

The problem is, in my opinion, trying to dedicate an entire channel to videogames...I love 'em, but I don't know that a 24-hour a day channel can be filled with enough stuff about videogames not to get insanely old and repetative. I think videogame TV works best as two or three shows on a network with a broader base, sort of like MTV does.

Diane Mizota and that chick from Cheats never struck me as real gamers, so, I see no loss. They always came off as posers to me and I found that just annoying.

If Filter or Cheats were done by someone or someones that talked like they new what they were talking about and were also entertaining to watch, I might watch the show.

G4tv.com... is that the one where the two chicks sit around a table and get in coming calls? That was another show I felt was quite meh and poorly produced.

Icons and X-Play's all I need.

I've noticed that none of the shows except X-play and AToS have had new episodes since October. There will probably be announcements that the rest of the lineup will be canceled as well. G4's execs took a good network and turned it into crap.

In the near future, I see those two being the only gaming kinds of shows on the channel. X-Play might try to be more of a comedy (like it hasn't already) rather than a review show and AOTS might try focusing more on non-gaming related topics (like it hasn't already. :P)

I see no big loss in G4TV.com, so kudos to that.

However, I enjoyed Filter when it was strictly a countdown show on G4. Mizota was fine for what her purpose was - to look appealing and to countdown what people voted on. When G4 merged with Tech TV and Filter became a mixture of Cool Tech and Filter, then it became a bad show. I was only interested in the countdown, not cool gadgets and whatnot. So I'm glad they axed it since it was going in a bad direction.

However, what they repleace these two shows with will probably be even more horrible. The only show worth watching on the entire network is Icons.

Isn't Tallarico part of the industry? I mean, he makes music for video games (http://tallarico.com/index.php?s=home) like MDK and set up a concert tour called Video Games Live (http://www.videogameslive.com/).....Yeah, but Tallarico is a complete ******* about his opinions, which is a big turnoff for people who watch Electric Playground/Judgment Day. I still remember he gave Kirby Air Ride a low score simply because he hates Kirby. =/ Granted KAR wasn't a very good game to begin with, but you have to admit that's a stupid reason to give a game a 4.

Yes, the dude is entitled to his opinions, but I stop respecting them whenever he acts like he's judge, jury and God about them. Which, suffice to say, is quite often.

Didn't you read my statement right? I said, " Too bad they can't hire real people in the industry and hear their opinions. And by real people, I don't mean complete asses like Tallarico."

He's a headstrong jerk who's running around telling off everyone against anything he believes in. Sure he's made an impact on soundtracks for games (well most of the 90's while everything else hasn't been too memorable). Sure's he's filthy rich. Yet I've never heard a man who's this deep in the industy ***** about so many games and desisions. He's against a ton of video games unless he's done music for them, have something in comon with Halo or Spiderman, or contain mainstream Mature situations.

Why not spend all of this time he has against flaming and start his own show that gives people tips to get into the industry and create music with programs like Cakewalk and Pro Tools outside the classroom? Makes sense to me having the Tommy Tallarico having a show on a video game network that teaches people about creating music for the industry.

In fact, forget Tallarico all together. Get people like Aaron Barber, Masaki Yamanaka, or James Dargie to teach us how to build and rig a character from scratch in Maya or XSI. I doubt that a show like that on G4 wouldn't get people's attention.

As for G4tv.com, I will actually miss it. It atleast was a good commentary show.

Diane was a poser, but you know you'd still hit it.

G4 is basically becoming Spike TV, "we're all about beer, babes, fast cars...but we'll show some video game stuff on occasion." It kinda turns me off of it now.

I liked Filter because it was a video game countdown show. Both John and Diane were annoying though. The first version of Filter was better, before they added music and movies and what not. No huge loss I guess but I did enjoy watching it.

The show G4tv.com I can live without but I NEED my Tina Wood fix. I hope she gets work on another show or something. Infact, add her to Attack of the Show. That'd be super.

ICONS is already stepping out of bounds with the King Kong episode. They didn't even talk about King Kong games...

ICONS is my favorite G4 show so seeing it "sell-out" makes me very unhappy.

Yeah Cheat's not very entertaining and Christan Holt doesn't seem like a gamer... none the less... I'd like her to bare my children </Mirokuism>

G4 is going down the crapper. If they're going to do this then they should let Anime Unleashed air nightly again. Rather than what... twice a week. The rest of barbwire buscuit pretty much sucks.

But at least AOTS is replacing them with actual watchable content (for the most part anyway).
I agree, when Kevin P. toured Japan, the comics feature, DVDuesday with Chris Gore, and some other features are enjoyable, but then there are some stupid things like their skits (Office Jesus never was and never will be funny), relationship Thursdays or whatever (WTF?). Oh yeah, did I metnion while Sara Lane is still a hottie, she has been rather annoying since the Screen Savers turned into Attack of the Show. Honestly, I liked when she appeared to be a modest, cute and friendly girl from Tech TV, but now she just makes the most ANNOYING jokes ever and her attitude just seems a lot more different, maybe that's just me? And remember when she, Tina, and Laura hosted AOTS that whole week themselves? Now that's what I call "hell on earth." :P

As to the poster asking about a replacement host, I dont think they ever made a conclusion. I was hoping they kept either Will or Seanbaby, because they were both really cool people, heck give both those guys a show or let them take over AOTS.

About ICONS, I wish it would just stick to gaming but I liked the Romero and Frank Miller episodes, but hope episodes like those are only used sparingly.

I liked both G4tv.com and Filter. Neither were great shows, but they were good for G4 standards. Now the only good shows left are AOTS (which is no where near as good as TSS was) and Icons (which is a great show).

Now G4 will add two shows that have nothing to do with games, but they seem to be rebranding the network which is dumb because they have no competition as a gaming network.

They had a good Icons yesterday, on King Kong, the 1930 movie, how it came to be, and the remake. It was interesting. I liked it. If they aren't going to do video games, they should do good topics like this, or the Sin City one.

You know, an ala carte cable system would kill networks like G4.

Unless.....the people who like the direction it's going outnumber the people who don't.....but that can't be true, can it?

While I have no opinion on G4-TV, I have mixed opinions on Filter's cancellation. I liked the show's concept of a top-ten list of video game-related stuff. However, I felt that show "jumped the shark" when they added music and gadget coverage to the show as well.

An example of what I mean: during a segment that was filmed at Anime Expo, while I do give the segments some points for sneaking in a Negima reference and having the guy interview Man-Faye, various elements of that segment made me wish I was at the convention and say to the G4 camera crew, "BRING BACK STARCADE!!!"

Yeah and dumb they spent millions to buy Tech TV only to play reruns of shows early in the morning and only use it for X-Play (with very little usage of Anime Unleashed.)

G4tv.com and Filter really never interested me though, so I don't really care. I do care if G4 becomes yet another channel that's not speicalized and unfocused.

Eh, I haven't watched G4tv.com in the longest time (since Scot Rubin left). Then again, I haven't watched G4 regularly since I heard Portal was going to be cancelled way back when so whatever.

I did like G4tv.com with the original hosts, though. Was it the greatest show ever? Not really. But it was enjoyable enough and Tina, Laura, and Scot seemed to have decent enough chemistry to carry the show. It's something that I wouldn't mind seeing come back on another network (hell, maybe even another video game network if one is ever started by somebody with competence and respect for the industry) or even as a two or three hour talk radio program (which I think it work quite well as).

Filter though... meh. It was a mixed bag. Some episodes were decent, some were horrendously dull or stupid. Luckily I stopped watching before all this apparent gadgets and music stuff came in. Still, the loss of Filter doesn't really get to me as much as the loss of G4tv.com.

I can honestly say that I will miss Tina Wood. She's been a more than OK host on the bastardized Screen Savers, and AOTS. I'd hope they keep her.

And Diane Mizota was cute, and that's just about it.

So, when will G4 change their network name, since they're not G4 anymore?

I don't know about Kristen Holt, but Diane Mizota isn't a "poser." She plays games. Some of her favorites include Parasite Eve, Katamari, Virtua Fighter 4 and Animal Crossing.

Care to back up your claims? I have never seen Tommy Tallarico "telling off everyone against anything he beleives in." He posts quite regurlarly on the JD forum at g4tv.com, so if you'd like to take this up with him, send him a private message over there. He has never said people should always agree with him 100% and he always treats people with the same amount of respect they have given him.

If you disagree with him, that's fine. He says nothing against your opinions, or claims that you are wrong. Never once has he done this. He has his opinions just like everyone else, and respects those who think differently than he does.

Also, he always has legitimate reasons for giving games the score he does. He didn't score Kirby's Air Ride low just because he doesn't like Kirby. He scored it low for the same reasons every other reviewer scored it so low. You even said so yourself, KAR was a bad game. So why disrespect Tommy Tallarico so much for this? Because he made a few jokes about Kirby? X Play makes jokes too. IGN and Gamespot throws in some humor on their sites as well. Why give Tallarico any more flack than other reviewers and game critics?

And why should he leave Judgment Day? Because you disagree with his scores? I disagree with his scores too sometimes. In fact, I completely disagree with his opinions on SSBM. I don't get all wrapped up in it and dwell on it. Why? Because I love SSBM and have tons of fun playing it, and to me that's all that matters. I don't worry about what other people think.

As for him being against games unless he's worked on them, well he preferred Pariah over Unreal Championship 2. Yet, he's done audio for the latter game. He also worked on some audio in Metroid Prime, and while he gave it a good score of 7.5, if he were as biased towards the games he has worked on he would have given it a 10.

Also, he is not against games unless it has "mature content." He rarely gives 10s to games, and the ones he did include Ico, Beyond Good and Evil, Prince of Persia the Sands of time, and Sly 2. He also gave Shadow of the Colossus a 9.5. However, games like BMX XXX and Rumble Roses received abysmal scores from him.

I suggest before going off on a rant like that, and accusing a person of so many misdeeds which are all lies, you do a little research. I have a lot of respect for Tommy Tallarico, and I don't appreciate people spouting off untrue bable like that.

http://forums.g4tv.com/messageview.cfm?catid=12&threadid=531963With him being so tight lipped about the reasoning for his abrupt departure from Icons and the pending new season, this has me a bit worried as well. I haven't really liked the direction the show has been heading in these last few episodes. Although he's not the only one that made the show work, he seemed to be an integral part of what made Icons great. Let's hope things don't turn for the worse.

I'm surprised, but not dismayed by the news. I liked Filter, both versions. The new one was cool because it looked at all aspects of gaming and tech, but the other format was cool too. I've been watching G4 since it launched [that doesn't mean I happen to agree with their points by ANY MEANS, it just means I watch it regularly], and I have seen tons of good shows come and go. Blister and Portal were cool shows that got canned, and they barely got a whole season before they were dead. G4TV.COM has been there since the beginning, and ever since Scot left, it became a "blah" show. Scot wasn't exactly that interesting, but he wasn't Geoff Keighly... God he annoys me to no end. G4TV.COM was actually a pretty solid show back when it started, but then it got worse and worse after the takeover, much like the other shows on the channel. The idea of G4TV.COM, that is to say, a weekly show to talk about the happenings of games, and interacting with fans is a fine idea. But they just did a terrible job at keeping up, since half the time episodes were 2-3 weeks old. I think they should have switched the hosts up. Pereira would fit there moreso than he does on AOTS, as his specialty is games, and he likes to talk about them moreso than the other people on G4 [excluding Sessler, I guess]. I guess I'll miss both shows, but it doesn't affect me that much, since I barely watch G4TV.COM these days, and Filter was just getting terrible timeslots, and was getting repeated to death. I really hope Comcast/G4 gets some more gaming-oriented programming, as the channel is becoming SpikeTV part II, what with Fastlane and The Man Show. They have some good anime licenses, but they really need to fix the timeslots for them.
