View Full Version : BKN is back

BKN is apparently rising from the grave, thanks to recent hits like "Legend of the Dragon" (supposed to air on Jetix in the fall of 2006, by the way), "Dork Hunters from Outer Space", and "King Kong" ("Kong, King of Atlantis" is currently on Toonami in the UK, and came out last month on Warner Brothers video in the U.S.)
As a result, they're releasing to the American market some of their hits from the past through Digiview DVDs Jan. 3: "Pocket Dragon Adventures", "Roswell Conspiracies", "Scruff", "SkySurfer Strike Force", "Starla and the Jewel Riders", "Ultimate Book of Spells" and "Monster Rancher".
For further info, look up http://www.bknkids.com/.

I've noticed every BKN program has the exact same drawing design, limited animation and cheap music.
So did they create that "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" movie that WB keeps showing every Christmas? I saw a couple minutes of that while waiting for KOTH to come on, and wow, I was shocked at how cheap it looked. Normally, WB actually spends money on these things.
I enjoyed roswell conspiracies.
BKN was decent because we didn't get the WB, and pokemon was ALWAYS crossed over onto our channels and blocked out what we were supposed to have.

I strongly suggest you go and register at www.tvshowsondvd.com/ (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/) to vote for your favorite show.
You might also also go to http://www.bknkids.com to get some direct contacts with the BKN folks themselves, to try to find out what happened to "Mighty Max".
Wouldn't mind DVDs of Street Sharks, Double Dragon, or Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog either.

Well, BKN does have its own "Sonic" show, "Sonic Underground". I believe DiC lists both SU and AOSTH on its website as shows being run on its DiC Kids network.
I believe BKN was involved with "Street Sharks" and "Double Dragon" as well, so you might want to check their website as well.

From all I've ever heard, DiC was actually responsible for making the original "Sonic" shows in syndication and on ABC SatAM, and BKN did a remake called "Sonic Underground". Many fans of the original show hated "Underground", but that show does have its fans. Unfortunately I can't judge for myself because I've never seen any of them except for "Sonic X".

I saw one episode of Sonic Underground on Teletoon a few years ago and it was horrible. Although they did use the same character designs from the SatAM version of Sonic, the characters themselves were just plain annoying and the stories themselves were forgettable. Gary Chalk didn't fit as Robotnik either. He couldn't hold a candle to Jim Cummings deadliness.

Legend of the Dragon isn't anything to write home about. It's kinda bland in both animation and storyline, to be honest.
The only other one I've heard of is Pocket Dragons, and that wasone of the worst cartoons I've ever seen in my life. Can't speak for anything else though.

Hmmm.... If Digiviews were to release "Monster Rancher" that way, they could sell the entire series for something like $8-12.
Not that we're likely to be that lucky. But the thought of picking up Seasons 2-3 (second never completely shown in U.S, third not at all) inexpensively is enough to get this fan absolutely salivating.

I think before you would contact a DVD provider, it would be best to know who has the DVD rights. Since BKN is the last one to have the show as far as I know, they would either have the show's rights or would be most likely to know who those rights reverted back to.

Actually, "Monster Rancher" enjoyed hit ratings when it first aired on BKN Kids, but the show was basically killed by subsequent network bungling (no, I won't go into it again, do a search of my posts if you want to see my previous rantings on the subject). Which should have had absolutely nothing to do with the video release, there's been more than one TV show that's been a hit in video once it got away from poor network editing and scheduling.
Unfortunately, Season 2 was released on video only in the United Kingdom, from what I've heard, and Season 3 was released exactly nowhere (even Season 1 got a complete release only on videocassette). I'm fervently hoping Digiview will give us "Monster Rancher" fans a square deal this time.

(In case you couldn't tell, yes, I live in the U.S.)Yes they did.Sorry, I'm afraid you did imagine seeing the ENTIRE second season on Fox/ABC Family. That network skipped two key episodes, 35. Battle With The Big Bad Four (http://www.tv.com/monster-rancher/battle-with-the-big-bad-four/episode/32284/summary.html) and 27. Tiger's Battle With Destiny (http://www.tv.com/monster-rancher/tigers-battle-with-destiny/episode/34238/summary.html). Plus, what episodes they did show underwent more drastic cutting than BKN originally presented (for example, when fighting Endbringer, I think Holly yelled at her foe something like, "Hey there, tin can!", which was cut from the Fox Family version). Fox Kids did run episodes 27 and 35 and used BKN's original editing, but did not finish either the weekday or Saturday runs to the last episode of Season 2. If Season 2 is released on video, there will be stuff that many American MR fans have never seen before.

Absolutely stupid to skip those episodes considering that they're key turning points for the arcs in the series, not to mention "Tiger's Battle with Destiny" was one of the best episodes of the series!
As for the FOX Kids run, they didn't use the original BKN editing as you might think. In episode 27, when Suezo teleported away from the Caballos only to wind up in front of another Caballo, FK cut to the next scene. In the original BKN broadcast (and YTV's broadcast), they showed a "burst image" followed by a cartoon sound effect before going to the next scene. In another scene, when Tiger and Gray Wolf power struggle with their lightning attacks, FK cut that scene out too while that scene was left intact on YTV and BKN.
In episode 35, just before Naga plummets into the abyss, he confesses to Holly, Genki, and Suezo about his path into darkness being irreversible and then smiles at them. That confession was cut from the Fox Kids broadcast.
Other than that, I don't know any other edits but these are the ones that stick out most clearly in my mind.
Personally, I really wish for uncut DVDs. Some of the editing during the Big Bad Four episodes made no sense (Suezo biting Naga, Genki headbutting Pixie).

Well, those old monster-rancher.com boards were wrong. On the board which the last link I gave you leads you to (by the way, I strongly recommend it for MR fans, it has a lot of great info but badly needs some new blood to get discussion going on the boards), we have heard from MR fans abroad who saw the episodes from Season 3, such as Australia (I've recently heard Canada saw Season 3 as well, but others like you don't seem to be aware of it airing on YTV, so I don't know).
As far as Season 4 goes, I've never run across any evidence of one in Japan or anywhere else. Now, I've heard that a promotional OAV for the MR4 game was made, and that there will be animation for the MR5 as well (whether that's a promotional video also, or a full-fledged season, nobody seems to know yet).
Interestingly, I'm working on a new feature that's hopefully going to draw more interest to the aforementioned board, fan-showing sypnosises for episodes of an imaginary fourth season of "Monster Rancher" (incidently, if any MR fans feel like turning to the anime section of the board and looking at them, feel free, I could use all the input I can get on it, but so far it's been pretty rough go so far). And by the way, I firmly believe a fourth season would stop being imaginary if all 73 episodes were aired in order with no editing beyond BKN's in a good time slot, there is ample room for a sequel (hey, if "Digimon" is getting a new season after all this time....)
I agree, Fox Family's editing has to bear the lion's share of the blame in "Monster Rancher" failing on that network, and there seems to have been some editing even by BKN that was inexplicable (like Holly socking Captain Horn, that's really only the comic violence you see all the time in anime and other cartoons). While I would very much like a uncut subbed track on the Monster Rancher DVDs, Digiview doesn't seem the type of provider to add a lot of extras, since they aim for the discount-store market. Still, I see absolutely no harm in anyone making their desires for an uncut version known to Digiviews (or BKN as well), or in casting their vote that way in the comments section of www.tvshowsondvd.com/ (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/) . Like ChibiGoku said, "why not?" Why not indeed.

YTV never aired the season 3. Only in Europe maybe in Australia too, you could see the season 3. I know in Germany they aired Monster Rancher 3. BKN never licensed the season 3 to a North America broadcast.
However, YTV aired in order all Season 1 and 2. The episodes were "uncut". I think they were some cuts but nothing similar that you had.

I wonder how this will impact BKN's earlier announcement that it was releasing a number of series through Digiview. According to head honcho Bobhot (see http://www.dgap.de/en/index.php?plugin=db_anzeige&id=62444&bereich=db&hp_lang=en&template=bricbox&seite=1&anzahl=14&von=19960701&bis=20090113&unternehmen=174&tpl=page), BKN will be releasing their shows directly in the British Isles, but "rent" their shows in distribution deals elsewhere in the world. Well, if you want more information, the phone numbers and email addresses of the head honchos are there (though not for BKN Home Entertainment Inc. apparently).

Just one more update on BKN's video releases. I called Digiview today to find out why there haven't been any sign of the BKN shows yet, and the customer-service representative told me to look for them at the end of February at the local K-Mart, Wal-Mart and Walgreens.

I only said you didn't see a complete Season 2, but that conclusion TV viewers did see. (Although, apparently that last episode was actually two original episodes compressed into one. However, in this case apparently, you can't blame Fox Family for that one because Digiview only bought the rights to 73 episodes from BKN, while the Japanese original actually had 74 in total. So it must have been BKN that cut down the final episode.)
