View Full Version : Let's pretend it's 2029!
Okay, let's pretend it is the year 2029. Next year will be the official 100th anniversary of Warner Brothers cartoons.
Warner Brothers has gotten over their fears of people finding out how old the cartoons really are, and they want to hype the 100th birthday of WB cartoons and make tons of cash off of their still popular characters/films.
Also, let's assume digital television has already forced Warner Brothers to completely restore the cartoons from the original negatives, and that some DVDs have already been released.
So, how would you commemorate the 100th birthday of WB cartoons if you were put in charge of it?

I would issue a complete DVD (and any other unthought of as yet media) release of the entire LT/MM catalog, in chronological order
struck from the original negatives and with all excised footage restored - exactly as they were released to theaters, as near as that would be possible.
Now, let's see...what will the censors and bleeding hearts want cut out of cartoons in 2029, hmmmmm?

Well.... I'm 14 and I have a dream to creat a cartoon show, and have WB run it. And, the cartoon is SO stinkin' good they have ME be in charge of WB. Here's a SMALL list of things I'd do.
1. Remove Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs, Ten Pin Alley Cats, and Isle of Ping-Pongo off of the Censored 11 list, since those three cartoons aren't that offensive.
2. Release every single Bugs Bunny cartoon on a LIMITED DVD, and I do mean LIMITED!
3. Buy the rights to Beany & Cecil cartoons.
4. Re-release ALL Pink Panther cartoons on VHS and DVD.
5. Blow Arlene Klasky's brains out (if she's still around by that time).
Well, here are my ideas:
We don't need to worry about the cartoons being restored since as I said before they were already restored to look good on HDTV and such (lets say they were all restored by 2025 or so), and that some DVDs have been released. So, like Chuckamuck43, I'd release a very large set of DVDs with every cartoon in order. It would have every extra imaginable.
But I would also get WB to release one-four hour packages of assorted cartoons to theaters as if they were movies. Most of these packages would just be various shorts from all periods.
I'd try and have a documentary made about the cartoons, a very extensive one filled with old interviews. Some books would also be released.
I'd have CN run a very long marathon of Looney Tunes in September, and June Bugs that year would go all out, showing every Bugs cartoon ever made, even the Puppetoon he made a cameo in.
Lots of merchandise because as I said before, WB really wants to make tons of money. I'd make sure it was tasteful merchandise, though. No Bugs Bunny-dressed-as-a-ganster garbage.
I'd make dolls like the ones Jon bought. The ones that show a character as they appeared in a particular cartoon (like 1940s Daffy as "Duck Twacy," or a doll of Daffy as that flower headed thingi from "Duck Amuck"). The dolls would be various sizes and prices, and I'd try and get as many characters as possible represented (like the three bears, or Beaky). There would also be posters, clothing, "best of" DVDs, ect.
For collectors I'd release reproductions of old posters, lobby cards, 1930s-60s toys. As well as limited edition cels and lithographs. All of this stuff would be fairly affordable.
Six Flags would also go heavy on the anniversary stuff.
I'd also make sure we didn't go overboard. We can't have people getting sick of Looney Tunes half way through the year.
Well, that;s it for now. I'm sure you all can think of better, more creative things than me, though.

You are SO right, Jack - I absolutely HATED that crap
I realize that one of the ways to extend a character's appeal is to "diversify" his image - but those "homeboy Buggsys" were really offensive - and unnecessary too.
I grew up in the 'hood and with his sassy attitude, disrespect for authority and ingenuity, Bugs was always popular with 'da Peeps', without any alterations! Oh, well, the geniuses of marketing...:)
All your ideas are 100 % spot on! If were lucky, you'll be working for them then and we'll get to see all that marvelous stuff!:D

Well, I'd do a buch of things:
1. Release Every Single Looney Tune ever made on DVD (All Uncut and Fully restored with original Opening and closing titles)
2. Un-ban all the "Censored 11" cartoons!:p
3. Buy the rights to All the Ub Iwerks Cartoons, All the DePatie-Freleng Cartoons, All the Beany and Cecil Cartoons, All the Fleischer cartoons owned by Viacom, All the Walter Lantz cartoons, All the Columbia Cartoons, All the Van Beuren Cartoons, All the Terrytoons, and All the Harvey Toons.
4. I would make a new cable channel called AAC (American Animation Classics).
5. I would buy the rights to MST3k and air the show on TNT.
