I don't ever remember being afraid of videogames.
But there was this one awesoem game that was a space ship and the console was a chair and a screen and a joystcik, and the whole mechanism would turn left and right as you did while the game "flew" thru space. it was always roped off to make sure noone would get hurt while observing.
Unfortunately it was tough to play and more expensive than most other arcades, so noone played it. I think it was a SEGA game.

Tell me about it. When I was younger, I would have a hard time going to bed whenever I saw Don Bluth film. The deaths weren't so scary as they were funny, but still those big-ass screen arcades (Like Starblade and M.A.C.H 3) still scare me to death :crying:

It might be that these arcades were usually in cockpit form...and so threatening to eat their unsuspecting occupants when they least expected it. The feeling of enclosure does wonders to one's claustrophobia.
I can't remember being scared of any arcade games specifically, but I do remember looking up at big, dark, reddish visages of fighting games and racing games of DOOM and feeling a little...intimidated. It was a feeling I associated with next-gen consoles a lot as they were coming out after the SNES generation...if only because I could never hope to have any of them in my wildest dreams and my imagination made up all the scary, adult stuff that just HAD to be on them.
Yes, I would say I was a strange child, but I get the feeling that saying so would make me ordinary...

Remember this game (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=C&game_id=7352)?
I played that one many years ago. Thing is, I could never remember the title. There were a couple scenes that always stuck out, though. It was like... at the beginning, a bank robbery (or some kind of getaway) was going on. The game would shout, "JUMP", and you'd hit the jump button (whatever it was). After that, you got into a car and... that's all I could remember.
The visuals were very much like a cartoon, almost Lupin-ish Anime style. Of course, I didn't know what Anime or Lupin was at the time; I was ten years old or younger then. I just knew it was a video game that looked like a cartoon, and I had to play it (though I never played enough to master it).
I had nothing but a few vague memories of the game, and I never knew what it was called... until tonight. I may have to see about buying it. :)

I didn't have any big cockpit or laserdisc games in my arcades when I grew up, so the only thing that really scared me were those "Insert Coin to Continue" countdown timers. I always ran away from the cabinet before it hit zero.

When you're like 5 years old, those dark ass arcades coupled with the sounds and booming voices will freak you out when you're that tiny. Usually there were other brats in there my age also, so I got over it after a while. Just went on my merry way, playing Mappy, Xybots and Joust over and over.

I was scared by a lot of things but I was never scared by a cockpit arcade game. The local Chuck-E-Cheese had the cockpit edition of RoadBlasters and I loved playing it that way.
