So I just found out that Butch Hartman, creator of The Fairly Oddparents and Danny Phantom, has his own website. With a forum and everything. Kudos to him for that. So I go there and I read his post about the new Danny Phantom episode "Fright Before Christmas". Here it is:
"Well, the season is upon us and, what better way to celebrate Christmas than with a bunch of ghosts? Hey, Charles Dickens did it, why can't we, right? So, if you love ghosts, and you love Christmas, then you will - I guarantee - LOVE the new Danny Phantom episode "The Fright Before Christmas". It premiered tonight on Nich and I am thrilled you finally get to see it. It looks great, the writing is top notch, and I hereby take this time to declare it...ahem...one of the best Christmas specials ever! I truly, and sincerely, think you'll agree. "The Fright Before Christmas" is sure to become a Christmas classic for years to come!"
Okay, I haven't seen that episode, and to anyone here who likes DP, great.
But really. I ask you. A "Christmas classic". Like "Rudolph"? Like "Frosty"? The phrase "full of himself" comes to mind...

Well, clearly he's very proud of the episode, and is putting some positive hype out. Whenn Bungie was making Halo 2, they had huge amounts of hype and nobody questioned how great a game is was gonna be.
During Cowboy Bebop you see: The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called... "COWBOY BEBOP"
Postive hype, can pay off.
So, I guess he really feels strongly about the episode, and thinks it will become a classic. Either that, or he's trying to generate ratings.

A creator having pride in his work isn't anything to be scared about.. in fact it should be a given. If a creator hates the stuff he's working on then something's not right. Though it sounds like he's usiing a bit of a joking tone from that paragraph, but even if he's not, no big deal.

The thing is I'd expect that type of hyperbole from a corporation, maybe from Nick itself, but from an individual it comes off as a bit much in the ego department IMO. Either that or desperation.
Still, I haven't seen the ep, and not being a DP fan, likely I never will, so what do I know?

Last time I checked A LOT of people put A LOT of work into making these animated shows. If he was hyping something he'd done all on his lonesome I'd say it's a bit much.

As a poster on that board I can say that he also told us that we were going to love the two T.V specials (which most of us did).
It's pretty clear, I think, that Butch is trying to keep the friends involved in the show (or at least make them feel like they're part of the experiance. To some extent I guess he's trying to do what Stan Lee use to do with the Marvel comics charecters. Having letters at the back of books, nicknaming the artist, and just in general getting the fans to enjoy the talkback. It's all in fun.
True these things can sometimes lead to people being psycophants, and to shortchanging some of the show's staff in praise of Butch (who I'm sure is also worthy of applause). But again it's all in fun.
And two things.
1. This should probably be in the Nicktoons forums.
&
2. I don't know Butch personally, but I think it's a rather adhomenin attack to call say that he's "full of himself). I mean feel free to attack the substance of his shows if you want, but I don't think it's fair to make accusations about the man.

I think it's great that a creator has a forum and is willing to talk with the community and get friendly with their fans.. they can even answer questions people will have on the show.
Also keep in mind the target audience for the show and forums are younger than teenagers.. so he has to act accordingly (like a parent, more or less)

Well, if he'd said something like "I think it's a good show, I'm proud of it, I hope you like it", well okay, but to boast about it like he did, saying it was an Xmas classic, etc....anyway it struck me as being a bit much. It did make me laugh, though, which is something Butch hasn't managed to do for some time... ;)

Judy I think it's obvious that he's being a bit tounge in cheak about it too. He didn't intend it to be taken very seriously, it's just good, clean, fun for those of us who post in the talkbacks. He's not being arrogant, or full of himself.
And nowhere in the post does he ever compare it to Frosty or Rudolf.

I hope he was joking. I seriously doubt a Danny Phantom episode would be considered a classic like Rudolph, Frosty, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, or The Little Drummer Boy. It'll most likely be considered more of a classic than The Night B4 Christmas(you do NOT want to see The Night B4 Christmas)but it will most likely not be Rudolph level.
I think that's a given. ;)

Where did he ever make the comparison between this DP special and those other movies. Judy I think you've drawn those connections yourself.

And again it's all in fun, his statement was dripping with sarcasm.

You just posted the same post that you did a while back. Why? I think she/he will respond if he/she wants to. No need to argue just for the sake of it.
I've seen the special, and I didn't like it. But there are some Danny Phantom episodes that I like and I do think they've done a great job on those. But this episode is not something to boast about, in my opinion.
What do you guys expect a creator to say about his own cartoons? "We have a Christmas special airing this December, but don't get too excited, 'cause it's not that good"?
I honestly don't see what's wrong with his remark. The guy is kind enough to host a forum where he can contact the fans. Like Jack Spicer said, I wish more cartoonists would do that.
