View Full Version : ABC rumored to be dumping parts of it's Kids Fare too
Rumors are going around that Disney owned ABC is considering dumping parts of it's Kids fare on Saturday Mornings in favor of a Sat Edition of Good Morning America. If this is indeed true, it just drops a lump of coal into a sack that's already littered with the faiures of broadcast Kids TV. Already NBC has said bye bye to the game by turning over it's schedule to Discovery Kids and Fox Kids will do the same soon. Even Kids WB is rumored to be sharing more programs with sister Cartoon Network next season. The kids Biz just ain't what it used to be.

if children's saturday mornings truly does crumble like this, then it's a minor tragedy in my opinion. i know i'd get laughed at by many, but i'm still a huge fan of saturday morning kids programming...to me, it's just not a complete saturday without it...it's really just tv in the end i know..not that big of a deal... in a small way though, it brings me back to happy, care-free times that i just don't feel anymore. i hope something changes with these plans soon. it's not like the suits have let us down before though right?? :( *gulp.

In my opinion ABC only has crap except for Recess and the House of Mouse, but this is still too bad.

I don't think it's a minor tragedy, I think it's more major than that. I am sick to death of news shows over taking the air waves, first of all, and second, Saturday morning BELONGS to cartoons. It should be cartoons on every channel from 6am til noon, no exceptions. It should be a crime punishable with a hefty fine from the FCC to violate it. A Saturday morning without cartoons is like a day without sun. It just ain't right. And I know that there will be some channels with cartoons, but you know what I mean, I am talking about the main networks here.

When you think about it, though, most of these "failures" were more the result of their own past goofs and greed rather than being "beaten" by the competition. Fox Kids had been on a downward slide for at least 4 years now. ABC has been mired in the sameness of Disney TV mediocrity for longer, almost a decade. When you overmilk a certain kiddie trend, and fail to constantly find new ways to stimulate children's interests, you get a massive LOSS of kiddie interest.
NBC died in the 80s, in my opinion. If they restart again, they'd better have some good ideas and smart marketing.

If they get rid of "The Weekenders", I'll write ABC so many angry letters, they'll be able to start and operate their own postal service.

Hm. As much as I hate to see the death of Saturday morning, I think it may simply be part of the evolution of broadcast television. The executives see Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Toon Disney, and think that there is enough animation out there to make the kids happy. And maybe there is. Cartoon Network cranks out enough good stuff to keep me happy, even without Saturday Morning stuff. But what about the kids who don't have cable?

Not to mention that Cartoon Network and Toon Disney isn't included in many regular cable packages. :(

I'm starting to think that everybody should get cable. There should be a law...

It is a shame that this seems to be the evolution of animation on TV. Not that many people are getting up on Saturday mornings anymore. Frankly, I never got up on Saturday morning smost of the times. I was able to catch my shows on wildfeeds the night before for various networks at around 12 or 1 o'clock. But it still sucks that there may be a time when there will be no Saturday morning cartoons for kids to wake up to. Having Saturday morning cartoons is always a fixture in a kids life, and it;s a shame that this may come to an end...
