View Full Version : ToonHeads Alert!
Hi Folks!
Just thought you would like to know...
This Sunday at 9pm, ToonHeads presents "Tish Tash."
An hour long tribute to the work of director Frank Tashlin.
And as an added bonus, there will be one last episode before the end of the year.
Set your VCRs for "Cartoon News Reels" at 3am on Sunday night/Monday morning.
Both of this episodes have some rare and interesting cartoons.
Hope you like them!
GAK
Ooops, I was in a hurry...
I meant to say, "Both of THESE...."
not "Both of THIS..."
Sorry!

Hey, Gak! Are you aware that you can edit your posts? BTW, I'm excited about "Tish Tash". Maybe we'll all finally see a fresh crisp print of The Stupid Cupid. I even have a gun in handy so I can perform the "Now I've Seen Everything" stunt! ;)

I can't wait! I really hope that the "newsreels" show features "Bosko's Picture Show" or "Buddy's Theatre."

I really hope GAK is right on this one, almost all of the new episodes have been very disapointing this season. and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be some "VERY RARE" cartoon presented this weekend.

I can't wait for the "Tish Tash" episode. I love Frank Tashlin's cartoons, and I hope this won't be a dissapointment. But, I noticed something weird. How come CN always shows the redrawn print of "Puss and Booty" when I saw clips of the computer-colorized and black and white versions of the cartoon on the commerical for the "Tish Tash" Toonheads episode??

Don't worry. The gun's not for me. It's for that pesky chupacobra that keeps sneaking into my backyard and stealing some of my pet goats. It only turns up whenever I'm watching Frank Tashlin cartoons. Weird.

You are so right...even the wartime cartoons special was out of whack because of the background imbalances of the cartoons shown. I hope there is a sequel in 2002 which concentrates on Japan and not Germany.

All I can say is that they better show "Puss N' Booty" either in its original B&W version or the computer-colored version! They've teased us all with their promos! They better deliver the goods...!
Well, I've got good news and bad news for ya.
The Good new is... We are showing a B & W version of "Puss N' Booty."
The Bad news is... I just discovered that the version of "You're an Education"
that we are airing tonight is edited.
I don't necessarily agree with this decision, but it's not mine to make.
Hope you still enjoy the show!
GAK
P.S.: Don't miss "News Reel Cartoons" tonight from 3am to 3:30am!

I forget, but does WB own any of Tashlin's non WB work?
Also, won't this be the first time the real Puss N' Booty has aired on CN?

If you're still around, GAK, what are the edits in "You're An Education"?
If not, do any of you regulars know where the cuts are?

They have acess to Tashlin's The Bear That Wasn't. This is an MGM cartoon, I believe.

There is The Bear That Wasn't, but Columbia still owns all of Tash's work for them (such as Fox & Crow).
It'll be interesting to see if we get to see any clips of his live-action work.

Tash only directed a couple of toons (one whole one and half of another) at Columbia, plus a little story work first. The remainder of his work was as producer (before he fell afoul).
A talk with the Disney archives might free up some of Tashlin's unused/uncredited story ideas and artwork from them...
I'm not sure if Frank's two John Sutherland/United Artists toons were renewed by Sutherland or if they're public domain, Warners should look into it... They were animated puppets identical to George Pal's Puppetoons.
Annnnnnd "the conglomerate" does own Tashlin's live action flick "The Glass Bottom Boat" which features animated titles.

While it was good to see the B&W Puss N' Booty for the first time, it was spoiled ever so slightly in that it had a 1938 Porky drum visual close, just like what was used in all the 1990 CZ shorts. But I guess I'm just being picky. ;)
It's interesting to note that several of the technical problems seen in the redrawn version of "Puss N' Booty" are in the original version. When the cat puts the papers back into the trash can, they miss it completely and just vanish in thin air. Also, one or more of the cels in this cartoon were filmed unside-down (watch the scene where Dickey is pulling up on his tied down cage, for a split second, the rope goes the other way), and in the beginning, when the woman is walking into the house, there is a jump or something. As if they filmed the wrong cel for one frame. It's amazing how many bloopers this cartoons has, was it's filming rushed in any way?
Not that I still don't love this cartoon.

It was great finally getting a GOOD B&W copy of "Puss N' Booty"! This historic Looney Tune deserves attention!

I agree!! That black-and-white print of "Puss 'N Booty" was *great*! What a nice way to ring in the new year! :D
"You're An Education" was really butchered, wasn't it? Loads of abrupt jumps in the soundtrack caused by edits. I will compare it to the uncut print when I get a chance.

Not all, I believe, because Porky's Duck Hunt from 1937 uses the actual That's All Folks! closing with Daffy dancing around.
Too bad I missed the original B/W version, but I have seen the colorized version on one of those WB! shows a couple of years ago.
By the way, in response to another message on this post, The Bear That Wasn't was MGM from 1966...along with The Dot and The Line from 1965, those two, I believe, were the only non-Tom & Jerry cartoons MGM made from the 1960's.
Just thank goodness 2001 is over...2002 is finally here!
