View Full Version : Larger avatars
i find the 75 by 75 to be a little too small, i don't expect, the standard in most forums that have restrictions is usually 100 by 100, but if you don't want to go that "large" for whatever reason an 80 by 80 is not much bigger but would allow a bigger range of more personal avatars, something like an avatar would not slow down the forums too much and even though you guys have to host it it wouldn't be much more than it is now.

What you suggest is actually a 25% increase. I think debating 80 seems a little pointless as the increase is next to nothing for people to even make the effort to change it.
So for an extra quarter more space for storage and a quarter increase in the load time. For one avatar, that may not seem much, but it is a lot when you have say 500 reading a board at one time, each calling up on those stored graphics. It would affect runtime slightly and I really can't see any benefit.
Avatars aren't THAT interesting or relevant to dialogue - which is what this place is about. So what advantages are there? I'm not really seeing any. Are you really interested in seeing my avatar 5-25% larger? I hope not. ;)

Considering that I'm not paying any part of the bandwidth cost for hosting all these images, I'll take what I can get and be grateful, personally. (-:

90X90-100X100 would be bigger and make a signifigant difference
not 80X80

We have no plans for 80x80 or above avatars and it's not something we're interested in pursuing at this point.
Thanks!

Yup. Someone would've got a big slap if that'd have happened.

The real problem with 75x75 is that it's hard to alter those pre-made avatars to suit my individual needs. And sometimes the best, most avataric screenshots from an episode just don't get made into avatars.

Most premade avatars that you find online are 80 pixels by 80 pixels, but it's easy to resize them, since everyone has some sort of paint program on their computer. The only exception with that is animated avatars are not easily resized, because not every paint program allows animation editing. Which they should, but this is not the time nor the place for me to rant about that.
I'm perfectly happy with this size, it just sometimes takes some extra work when making a new avatar. If anything, the file size, not the appearance size, is what bothers me. But I understand the reasoning behind it, so I don't complain vocally. Just in my head. My poor crazy head.
Are you really interested in seeing my avatar 5-25% larger? I hope not. ;)Yes, actually, I am. Do you pay by the hour or...?

Requesting it in the avatar thread usually has pretty successful results. Is there a specific avatar you're wanting made?

Yes, you are quite right. Consider me owned.
you can make the avatar size bigger but the file size remain the same. the jump from 75 to 80 is little but does make some difference,
and avatars help you personalize yourself in a forum instead of just all text, it is also easier for you to know who is writing the post a lot faster, so they are useful.

You should be thankful that you have 75 x 75 pixels for this site. On TV.com, you can only select the avatars that are available over there, and they're only 36 x 36 pixels.

I wouldn't mind seeing the filesize limit increasing from 10kb to 15kb. Many animated avatars I create end up literally a few bytes over the limit at the most optimised. The actual picture size I can live with. deviantART only allows 50x50 images, yet has a 15kb size limit. I find this a lot better than the limits on Toonzone because it allows one to get more creative with their avatars.

It was pretty difficult to get a 75x75 avatar, and yea most forums use 100x100. I'm not complain just stating a fact.

ANYway,,,
I'm an image nut and make so many avy's and sigs that no one will ever see them all. While I prefer 100x100 avy's because I can make more interesting images, I like the seeing (I don't think I achieve it often myself) what people do when challenged by the 75x75 restriction. Really it's just there to make your post more easliy identifiable at a glance (kinda confuses the heck out me thinking "I didn't write that" and realise that's just the same Yomi)
And it does slow a large board, espicially with high kb, KAF takes forever to load but they have beautiful images.
SJJ? that is an actor right? it always looks so sturn,,, maybe a funny hat?

I have the greatest suggestion of all...
Next time I talk to Brian, I think I'll suggest we don't allow avatars at all!!
With no avatars, no one can complain about the sizes, right? ;)

I wonder why increasing the size to 100X100 is such an issue these days.

Mmm, someone who is ultra rich should pay for all the ISPs. That way, everyone could have DSL/Broadband. No waiting 15 minutes to load anything.

Maybe not everyone in the world, but still, even if 1 person who browses this site connects via Dial Up internet, then that's 1 person who we don't want to have to bog down with an incredibly long wait time. Yes, while Broadband/Wireless connections are becoming more prevelant, they are not the norm. There's still plenty of people out there on dial up for whatever reason... and until the phone companies and internet providers say "Forget it with Dial Up. No one's allowed to use it anymore" then we need to make sure our website is accessible to EVERYONE. Not just those who can afford Cable or DSL or Wireless or those who go to a fancy school with a T100 Network or whatever.
If 100x100 avatars are that big of a deal... start your own forums and allow 100x100 avatars there. As for here, it's a done deal. Case Closed. End of Discussion. Let's move on now.

So there.

Didn't we have a thread about this, a while back? Yeah, I'm sure we did. Again, consider yourself lucky. When we first switched to vBulletin, I voted to not even enable avatars. =P

Let's move on now.But if you keep the same file size limit, would upping avatars to 100x100 make a difference? You'd be downloading the same amount of data, but only the image would be larger. I can see why upping the actual kilobyte size would be an issue, but what's up with not upping the resolution?

I agree with Big Will. Sorry guys, but I don't particularly want to see your pictures any bigger, and I'm sure it won't distress you to see mine remain at 75x75. I come here to talk not to check out who is wearing what.
I personally find avatars of 100 intrusive on my screen. They start becoming like banners, rather than being about personal debate and chat. I think large avatars give off the wrong message about what a forum community is about. 75 pixels seems to work great for me. A splash of individual colour with no excess.

*sniff* House is very popular. In the UK, it did very well and I hear it's second season is strong in the US. I've been a Hugh Laurie fan from as young as I can remember!
Battle Of The Planets is an awesome rework of what some would argue as being the grandfather of the manga genre, Gatchaman. I think such a historical image is rather befitting of a man of my years...

To me at least, bigger pictures are more intrusive on trying to read through the thread. That's true. Go to Animation Insider, and it's sort of bothersome, with the huge titles and avatars. Toon Zone has become the standard I use to compare with other forums... and, quite frankly, none of them stand up. I'd rather keep the avatars the size they are... or shrink them. Mind you, I'm still using dial-up, and I appreciate the fact that this site doesn't take a time to load (except when people put ABSURDLY LARGE images in their posts).

To me it would be nice because i have 0% of knowlegde about paintshop and all those fancy sites. All i do is go on google. It is really difficult to find the perfect thing your are looking for. BUT. I really dont care what the size is. I am thankful we can choose our own custom avatars. If your really that strong about it make your on animation site which lets you have 100x100 size avies. Thats my 2 cents. Speakin of avies i need to get rid of the Christmas tree.

I certainly wouldn't mind having a larger avatar. Usually when I decide to put something up as an avvy, its of relative significance or importance to me. So having it be larger wouldn't hurt because the smaller the image, the more the quality of it diminishes and the less effective the point I want to get across becomes.
But meh...I suppose I can live with this sized avvy.
