What are some of your favorite books or book categories? Also, any recommendations and why? I rediscovered how much fun reading can be two summers ago. Amazing what happens when I get no TV for a period of time. :p

As a child I would often lounge in the fairytales and folklore section at the public library. It's how my interest in mythology, legends, and fantasy came about. :) Children's classics I like because of the imagination and heart put into them. As for a favorite or any favorites, I can't really say. A trilogy I did enjoy reading back in Jr. High was the Darkangel Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce. A good read for anyone who loves fantasy such as Lloyd Alexander and Madeline E'ngle (sp?) books.

I mostly read screenplays. Most people seem to hate reading screenplays, but I like it. I read comics too. But only a few. And I can't read them if I don't like the artwork. As for books; I mostly read non-fiction. I've read few novel oustside of what was required for school. I like Ender's Game a lot. And I'm planning to read the LOTR books, since I liked the movie and it got me interested in the characters.

At the moment I'm mostly readin'.......

The final last two pages of the 4th Harry Potter book - The Goblet Of Fire (or as it's probably retitled in America as the cuppy shaped thing of hot stuff that burns.....*)

Sherlock Homes - the complete collection of short stories

Slaine Graphic Novel - The Warrior Beyond Time

I will be reading:

Fellowship Of The Rings - soon... if I get round to it(!)

Plus any Wodehouse - in paricular Jeeves And Wooster.

Oh I agree with Do Androids Dream...? Good book. Must read the next book in Jeter's rather mixed sequels to the Blade Runner film - as soon as I locate it...

Also, forums, TV Guides, Final Fantasy in game text..... 2000AD for some unknown reason... :D

* that was a JOKE :D - reference to the retitled first film - no flames thank you very much ;) !

Fantasy is my main interest with a little bit of sci-fi thrown in.

I love J K Rowling. She is my favorite auther. The Harry Potter series is very well-written.

I've also read the first two books of Frank Herbert's Dune series.

I've started reading The Fellowship of the Ring.

I like this book called The Secret of Dragonhome by John Peel. I got it from my grammer school's library for participating in something.

To put off reading the books I've been assigned from school, I read the books based on the Angel tv show. They're not the greatest in the world, but they do have Doyle in them.

Unfortunately, I have to read an assigned book a month for my English class, and I have summer reading books. I have no time to read for entertainment. :(

Yay! Someone likes Sherlock Holmes too! :D But I like the novels better than the short stories.

I also really like Shakespeare, however the only things I can find in the libraries are re-writes or cliffnotes. *sigh*

I'm also a big mystery fan. I read The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephan King some time ago and never read another book by him again. Too many adult situations.... (Yuck!)
Going along with mystery, I *looooove* Agatha Christie! My favorite out of her books has to be Death Comes as the End.

Sci-fi is just now starting to grow on me. A friend of mine recommended for me The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As you can probably imagine, that hit off pretty well. :D

There are also a whole bunch of Jewish mystery writers like Yair Weinstock and Chaim Eliav that you probably never heard of. Trust me, I'm not trying to bring religion into this....I just love their books! :D

I also love Jane Eyre. {shrugs} I didn't know where else to say that...

Currently going on a R.A. Salvatore binge.....Forbidden Realm books are good.

My fav books is the Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman....haven't read any of her other books yet though ^^;

Some of my fav authors: Anne Rice, Stephen King, Mercedes Lackey, R. A. Salvatore, Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman(go Dragonlance books!), Brian Jacques and uh can't think of any more off the top of my head..

Fantasy, gothic romance...I like stories set in exotic places and weird landscapes, with psychologically disturbed characters getting a few automatic bonus marks from me.

*Melvyn Peake's Gormenghast Trilogy
*Moorcock's Eternal Champion books, especially Corum, John Daker and Elric.
*Charles De Lint's urban fantasies
*David Gemmell--mainstream hack and slash violent fantasy writer. A guilty pleasure.

These are a few of my favourites.

I do mostly read comics. But when it comes to actual books...

I prefer the fantasy novel's(Lord of the Rings being the best example). I really hate it when the writer describes every little detail...I like to use my imagination..
I enjoy the occasional sci-fi story...but not quite often...

Sherlock Holmes! I bought the complete short stories as a x-mas gift to myself. Haven't read these since high school (seems like eons ago :( )

Love anything by King especially the Dark Tower series. Dean Koontz to a lesser degree. Some of his stuff totally stinks though.

Mysteries: Sue Grafton's alphabet series, Sara Paretsky (VI Warshowski), and Patricia Cornwall (Kay Scarpetta) are my favorites.

Hitchhicker's Guide series is terrific!

Johanna Lindsay and Sandra Brown are good for romance with a decent plot.

The books based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer are pretty good. I'll have to start on the Angel ones sooner or later.

I'd like to find some Batman novelizations since I can't get into comics.

Oh heck, anything. I love the classics, like Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Twain and, yes, Sherlock Holmes. I'll give just about any novel a try if its plot sounds halfway interesting. Fantasy is good, and I like the occasional scientific book... anyone here ever read What Einstein Told His Barber? Fascinating in-depth discussion of everyday phenomena.

If I wasn't pressed for time, I'd go on and on about my favorite books. I'm an English major, after all!

Your mind. Bwahahaha! :D

I usually like to read science fiction, especially the stuff that stays in the space opera side of things.

Of course it's been awhile since I've read some good fantasy, and LOTR re-wet my appetite.

And I also enjoy a good drama or mystery.

Like Hatter, I will read ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Comedy, drama, horror, history, even programs for plays and operas will keep me interested (yes, I'm that boring).

I HAVE just read:

TIMELINE by Mike Chriton
THE GOOD EARTH by Pearl S. Buck (even if it was for a school assignment)
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (need I tell the author?)
And some book on the history of Modern Germany.

I read a good bit, so here are a few of my favorite books:

Diane Duane's Spider-man Trilogy...

Diane has got to be my most favoritist authors EVER!!

SHE KICKS ASS!!

(BTW naraht is one of her Star Trek characters in the books My Enemy My Ally, The Romulan Way, Spock's World, and the two new ones which weren't as good..
She also wrote in the Star Trek-verse Doctor's Orders, and Wounded Sky

She's also writen a Stardrive trlogy which was excelent...
I've read the 1st two Spidey novels of hers...

if it's Diane Duane...it's good...

ok...

enough on her..

PERN!

Anne McCaffrey's Pern series is awesome, and I highly recomend it. I've never really gotten into much of her other works, but Pern is gude!!!! (and yes, for those of you familiar with Pern, when I'm feeling Draconic, I do become Narath)

I'm currently reading LotRs for the third or fourth time...

I'm also slowly working through R.A. Salvadore's Forgotten Realms series..I've gotten through the 1st two trilogies...

Any of the B5 trilogies (Psi Corp, Centauri Prime, TechnoMage) are great reads, and sanctioned..(ie unless JMS changes his mind, this IS what happened) Psi Corp especially is a great trilogy, and will really change your perspective on one of B5's greatest villians.

Ok, I could keep going...but...I don't want to hog your bandwidth..

Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Strikes Again". It is awesome. On par with "The Dark Knight Returns".

Lets see, I've read the whole Lord of the Rings series and the Hobbit (people seem to forget about that one). I've read some of the Harry Potter books, and some Mobile Suit Gundam. I've also read some Steven King books also, but my favriote type of story is fantasy (as if you couldn't tell).

I don't know if I could read the whole thing, but I would like to, this guy wrote a long story ,about his uncle getting married to his mother only a few months after his father died. It blows his mind away. and he starts thinking about revenge on one hand, and suicide on another. A great quote something about to be, or not to be........Wrote as a play, ....He wrote another one, about two teenagers in love, and their families wouldn't allow them to ever see each other...Maybe reading these stories might be too much, but some great movies have been made of them...Hope everyone has a Happy New Year --Stuart

Orsen Scott Card is a really talented sci-fi writer. :) Harry Potter (the movie) caught my eye, i've been meaning to pick up one of the books to read but i haven't found the time.

Dude, that was one of the baby Hortas from "Devil in the Dark" right? Yeah, he ate through a solid metal wall and got indigestion....I was wondering why that sounded familiar....

Well...that gave away one series I read  . Let's see...I do a little bit of the Star Wars gig once in awhile...Zahn's trilogy and duology were good.

SHERLOCKIANS UNITE!

Just wanted to scream that at the top of my longs :D . Yeah, Doyle is excellent brain food.

Another excellent mystery series: Diane Day's Fremont Jones. More aimed at the female audience though. Sorry guys. :(

Really like Jim Morrison's poetry and the stuff he got into (Blake, Kerouac, etc. etc. etc.). That goes hand in hand with the doors' music.

Peace and Rock 'n' Roll
